Four-star General Mark A. Milley, 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and highest-ranking officer in the United States Armed Forces, is a walking answer to the unasked question, “What if Jim Mattis were fat and dumb?”
With his fellow four-star and President Trump’s first secretary of defense, Milley shares a powerful but muted arrogance, a strong but less than rabid hawkishness, a clear political ambition that nonetheless defies immediate identification, and the obvious desire to be seen as a 21st-century warrior-scholar. He does not share with Mattis the requisite intelligence to uphold these delusions of soldier-sagehood, nor the basic capacities required to competently lead men and fight wars.

This is a terrific article. Leary really captures Milley. That question in line two of the intro is priceless.

The little blue rocker on Milley's left pocket flap says "SPECIAL FORCES," which means he went through anywhere from a year to a year-and-one-half of training with more than 100 other soldiers, who I am confident can tell us if our Generalissimo has always been the shape-shifting a**whole he is now or just another example of Lord Acton's famous dictum "power corrupts." Anybody know?

Have just read this for the second time. Leary writes an amazingly accurate portrait of this ambitious little (fat) incompetent.

Vain too. Nobody as obese as Milley has a flat stomach. I wonder who makes his girdle?

I sent the meme on the home page of Ike vs Milley to a friend who wrote me back, " I think one of those ribbons was for slot car racing."

I was curious about this big fat bloated chow hound the day he marched to the burned out church with President Trump then apologized for doing so. At that moment he was trying to throw the President under the bus. Milley looks and sounds like a stolen valor creep with all his PX (post exchange) warrior medals than a real commanding general like Eisenhower was.
This man, Medals Milley, is a dangerous man to all service personal he really thinks much of himself believing his junta was a success when he should be stripped of rank and facing a court martial for treason and sedition.

"Over the course of four presidents, 12 secretaries of defense, seven chairmen, ten CENTCOM commanders, 20 commanders in Afghanistan, hundreds of congressional delegation visits, and 20 years of congressional oversight, there are many lessons to be learned." - Gen. Milley
Here are two that we need to learn quickly. (Add your own):
1) NEVER hire a retired flag officer (or any other rank) as Secretary of Defense. Whether Mad Dog Mattis or Lloyd Austin. We are a country that Constitutionally places command of the military in civilian hands. Don't give that away to the military, even retired, as it defeats the purpose.
2) NEVER stay anywhere longer than it takes to win a war, and then let the survivors pick up their pieces. And a corollary is that those fighting for their country in their own country are NOT our allies...we are THEIR allies. Our idea of "freedom" is not universally shared. Let them sort it out.

So the elephant in the room (so to speak) is something no one here seemingly has picked up on. Milley is positioning himself to make a run for president in 2024. It will be interesting to see for which party he would run for, (not that there is a lot of difference between them anymore.)

If you have been paying attention to the USA civilian and military involvement in Afghanistan for the last twenty years it should be evident to you that the war against the primitive Islamist terrorist groups there, Taliban or otherwise, who are actually seventh century religious fanatics and have been as such since childhood, was lost as soon as the US Government made the decision to stick with limited war strategies and tactics that were mostly defensive in nature, with the overriding political objective to transform the mostly primitive tribal Afghan population into a mirror of a peaceful and liberal Vermont style society.
Once the USA made the decision to invade Afghanistan with American troops, to fight Islamist terrorist groups, US civilian and military leadership should have committed to using total war strategies and tactics with the mission of completely annihilating the Taliban and the other primitive tribal Islamist terrorist organizations there, and only then, when that war was over with the Afghan Islamist terrorists all dead, should the USA ave attempted to transform tribal based Afghanistan into a semi-modern country.
Anyway it is odd that the twenty or so highly medaled US four star Generals who commanded the many hundreds of thousands of highly trained and modern equipped US and NATO troops with all sorts of air support over a period of twenty years in Afghanistan, could not figure out a way to defeat the primitive tribal based Taliban that consists of about seventy five thousand primitive religious fanatics who are still living seventh century lives.
