Sympathy for Simone Biles

Simone Biles, the main reason anyone wants to watch the Olympics, given her thrilling artistic gymnastics, has pulled out of the U.S. team events, and since then, even the individual all-around event, citing her mental health (snip) Certain people on the right, who shall be nameless, criticized her as a "quitter." Choke artist. She took a place on the team that someone who was hungry, and wouldn't quit, didn't get.

If she gets "help" and finds a job at Walmart to fill in her time, I'll buy it. She's a "veteran" that has cashed in. Now it's too much pressure. She knew the job was dangerous when she took it.

I’ll give Biles the benefit of the doubt in quitting, BUT these problems didn’t crop up overnight. They had to be evident during training, and she should have retired then and there if she felt she didn’t have it. I am with No. 2 on this.

Her withdrawal saddens me. The lack of empathy for her saddens me even more. She's a proven winner, but even winners have bad days. She's only human. The mental aspects of competing at this level are significant. She may be too old to come back in gymnastics, but I wish her success and hope to see her smiling face celebrating a victory in the future.

Quitters never win. She just normalized "quitting" in sports. She shouldn't have gone if she wasn't going to give it all she had. Her spot on the team belonged to the "next Simone" to gain experience for the next Olympics. In the 1966 Tokyo Olympics a Japanese male gymnast KNEW he had a broken leg yet did his routine on the high bar KNOWING his dismount would require him to land on that leg and take the pain. He did it and landed it. Now that's a winner.

It wasn't that long ago that Kerri Strugs severally sprained her ankle doing a vault. But she knew that she had to do a second vault and nail it or her team would not get the gold at that Olympics. So she braved the pain and did that vault -- giving the USA team the gold. She had to be carried off, and the pain of the whole incident was incredible for her. But that is what being part of a team used to mean. Now we are a society of snowflakes. Simone Biles needed to "suck it up" and bring up all the strength that she had in her to do this competition. As soon as the team competition was over, she could leave and go deal with her "demons" in private. But, instead, she let her team down. Lie-berals have spent decades trying to destroy the classic American symbols of teamwork and competition. Sadly, Simone may just have proved that they have succeeded!!!

She already is an Olympic champion times 5. This just means she won't be a 6 or 7 or 8 times Olympic champion. I wish she had resolved these issues before the games started but she didn't. I can't really blame her for not wanting to do dangerous routines (like on the bars and beam) when she is mentally not all there.

Contrast her "performance" in quitting with that of Emmitt Smith in the final game of the 1993 season vs the NY Giants for the 1993 NFC East title and a playoff bye. For those whose eyes are rolling back in their heads, this was back when football was not yet a commercial for black democrat supremacy and players only took a knee when someone was injured. Smith separated his shoulder in the first half, rendering his right arm essentially useless. He wouldn't come out of the game, which included Overtime, as his logic was that only a win would earn him an extra week off to heal, and the Giant's defense was for real, smelling blood in the water. Every time he was tackled, lineman Nate Newton or one of his teammates pulled him up so he could go back to the huddle. Tied in OT, he carried the ball on 9 of the 12 plays of the final drive to win the game, home field advantage, the 1st round playoff bye, and the Super Bowl.

And let's not forget Jordan Chiles who was thrust into the spotlight because of Biles. She did well in vault and balance beam, then had a disastrous floor exercise from which the USA could not recover, handing the Gold to the ROC. She'll have to live with that terrible olympic memory for the rest of her life. You saw her with her head buried in her hands while Simone was chorling for the cameras afterwards.

Clay and Buck had an interesting take on this. Imagine it's the Super Bowl at halftime. Suddenly, Tom Brady announces that the stress of the game is too much for him, and he's going to sit out the 2nd half. What would be the reaction? Would Tampa Bay regret signing him? Why didn't he retire instead of starting with another team, only to let them down? Biles should have dropped out during the tryouts, opting to retire, if she "couldn't handle the stress." She's a quitter, sorry Monica. Watch less Oprah and choose something with sense to watch.

Is anyone asking about the sudden emotional and mental state her decision placed her teammates in? They were expecting Simone to handle things, and provide a certain level of performance, then suddenly it was thrust upon the remaining members to handle things in her absence. I'm sure this added a significant amount of mental stress to perform up-to Simone Biles standards just to maintain a medal finish. Remember, Simon Biles is a grown woman of 24 whereas most of her teammates are barely 18.

She will come to regret her decision one day. She will never know now if she would have been able to push through and deliver. She is 24 years old...she is not new to the pressure of this level of competition and if she had things going on at this time that wouldn't allow her to deliver then she should have stepped aside prior to going to Tokyo so some one else that was perhaps ready to compete could have lived their dream.

It's hard to know what others are going through, even when we "know" them, much less only see them on TV. But I wonder if there would have been a little less pressure in the cooker had she stuck to her landings instead of trading the fame she earned through sports for opining on political hot buttons that have nothing to do with why she's famous. It's almost eerie how prescient and self-fulfilling her tweets regarding Trump supporters and Jan 6 would later become for some of her own supporters: "embarrassed but not surprised disgusted but not surprised sad but not surprised angry but not surprised speechless but not surprised" She's no mental health hero. She just choked. The end.

This week in history witnessed a small band of Christian knights terrify and brutally defeat a massive horde of Muslims -- at the battle of Jaffa. On July 27, 1192, Saladin, the great hero sultan of Islam, surrounded and besieged the tiny Christian-held town of Jaffa. According to chroniclers, the Muslims numbered around 20,000 and “covered the face of the earth like locusts.” Messengers were instantly dispatched to King Richard I, who was then in Acre, preparing to sail back to England. Before the battered and bruised messengers had finished relaying their message, “With God as my guide,” Richard declared, “I will set out to do what I can,”

Sinclair Lewis’s novel of 1935, It Can’t Happen Here, was published amid the rise of fascism in Europe.
