Simone Biles, the superstar gymnast from the U.S., will not participate in the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Games and will instead focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said in a statement early Wednesday.
The decision comes a day after she pulled out of the team all-around competition.
Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the individual all-around competition.

She withdraws, hands the gold to thr ROC, and still, the cameras were on her.

I think the insane jumps, twists and spins of gymnastics with risks of injuries that could cause lifetime paralysis is something that should be banned from Olympic competition. In fact It seems to me the whole modern Olympics has turned into a circus of overspending and national strutting, and I wish the United States would just withdraw from them.

She's certainly represented us well in the past. We don't know what she may be going through. I'm not ready to jump on the train to negativity about her yet.

If she was that mentally unstable, then she should not have been there in the first place. She needed to stay back. What a disappointment.

Sorry for the second post. #3, I have been reading that she is going through some very deep depression. If this was the case, she should have stayed back to receive help.

She represented America when America was Great. Now that America is broken, depressed, and has mental health issues... fitting.

The Press puts so much pressure on the athletes who win that I can see how that could be intimidating. It happened years ago to one of our ice skaters in the Olympics. The Press wants perfection. That is too much. I don't blame her for pulling out. If her ankle hurts, she can't land on it without doing more damage. She could end up with permanent damage. She is still a champion in my opinion.

Reading quotes from other stories, she faces tremendous pressure to carry the team, and is more concerned about the competition of the individual events and the All-around title for herself.
Her proficiency is unquestioned, and she had a bad landing on one of the events and her mind was not focused as it usually is. To walk out on her team mates looks really bad. Without her other scores, perhaps the silver would have been out of reach.
There is tremendous pressure to perform well in these events, but ALL of the contestants feel that same pressure to do their best. The almost singular focus on Simone Biles by the media makes every little mistake magnified from an anthill to Mount Everest. This is the price of excellence because it difficult to be the best every time.
At some point, even the leader of the pack will either be challenged and defeated, or walk away and focus on life instead of competition in the Olympics. This has been almost her entire life, and at 24, likely time for her is coming to an end to spend every waking moment on competition.

She says she got out because she was afraid she would mess up and cost the US the gold.
I'd like to think that is the truth.

She's not the first. Oscar De La Hoya quit on the stool against Manny Pacquiao over 10 years ago. Not the Olympics, but quitting is quitting. BTW, De La Hoyas' injuries were far and away worse than those of Biles.

If she has decided that the team is better off with an alternate stepping in then her move would have been one of the most honorable acts in sports history. If on the other hand she can't accept a decline from the best ever to just very good, second or third best on the team, then the move is less sporting. Highly understandable however, yet still an act that centers on her not the team or the country.
I won't pretend to know.

I hope she’s ok. It’s not right to call her a quitter. No one gets to her level without tremendously hard work, and she’s proven herself. We don’t know what she’s dealing with, and withdrawing must be terribly difficult for her. Maybe this is sudden, maybe it’s been coming on and she thought she could push thru. From accounts I’ve read the Olympic experience for athletes is pretty dreary this year and maybe this contributed to her problems. She was such a bright spot last time with her amazing performances and huge smile. I will say a prayer for her.

I think it's a different Olympics this year. The athletes don't have the energy coming from their fans. It could make a difference. Another fallout from Fauci (who has never mentioned closing the Southern border to try to stop the spread of covid- tells you where he's coming from)

The last girl on the team that was sexually abused by the team doctor. There's no telling what she's been through and still going through emotionally, so cut her some slack.

Like all things, we won't know the truth for months or years.
She got her money and A-list status. We got nothing. That's all I need to know.

Every elite athlete that performs in the mass arena faces ridiculous pressure from the public especially in the age of social media. I don't fault Simone for doubting herself for whatever reason but this happens to every human from time to time. What failed her was her support network. Where were her friends and teammates to restore her confidence? Where was her coach(es)? Where was her family? "No man is an island" is an important concept. We ultimately must perform individually but it is the support of our friends and family that can get us past our dark periods of doubt and find the strength to achieve our purpose.

I personally don't give a damn what she does, but I do question this mental stuff. She trains, gets the free trip to Japan, then at the last minute claims she's has mental problems and drops out of the team event. Then because of her mental state, she drops out of the individual event because of the same reason. Why is she still there if she's not going to compete? Why is she still in Japan? Is this all a PR stunt, because she seems to be getting a hell of a lot of attention for doing nothing.

My question in all of this is why wasn’t Jade Carey, who will replace Biles in the all-around because she was third best on our team in qualifying, not on the team for the team competition? My guess is the coaches made a “woke” decision. As I enjoyed watching Jade compete, I am delighted she will have the opportunity.
Biles is a selfish team member, not the GOAT. She should never have taken another’s place, knowing she has these mental problems.

I am waiting to hear that she received 'racist' treatment in Japan and for that reason it was impossible for her to go on! One gymnast explained that she got 'lost in the air' ....well, other athletes have been dealing with the same issue for years. They got back on the horse and continued. If she has a deep depression she should not have been on the plane in the first place. At a news conference she was blabbing about some other underlying issues. Hello, most of these athletes have underlying issues as well as physical issues. They do know however that they are there for a reason, and it's not to play diva at the wrong time and place!

I tend to believe the reports from people that really know about gymnastics. She didn't have it that day. And quit so that her teammates would have a better chance at winning.
She was having a crisis of confidence and rather than do a very complicated move, she went for something easier and couldn't even do that. And she quit for the greater good of her teammates.
I think that's admirable.

So what? Does her quitting matter to anyone but herself and her many sponsors waving lucrative endorsement contracts under her nose? Maybe to NBC as fewer will tune in to see the pixies perform. The Olympics have nothing to do with nationalism or patriotism except in the minds of a few. They could replace the names of the countries "represented" with Nike, Addidas, UnderArmour, McDonalds and Coca-Cola...in the future they may.

I watched the qualifying rounds on Monday and she was not landing her flips, somersaults or twists well at all. And her vault last night was horrific. In fact if you watch her vault in slow motion, you can see a look of terror on her face as she was trying to land. There is something wrong with her whether mental or organic. Maybe she knew something was wrong before the team headed to Tokyo in which case she should have stepped aside. Only she knows when it became apparent to her that she wasn't fit. She doesn't express herself well at all. The US team had the gold in their grasp after the ROC made a disaster on the balance beam, but we flubbed the floor exercises. So we won silver. We coulda been contenders!

It wasn't that long ago that Kerri Strugs severally sprained her ankle doing a vault. But she knew that she had to do a second vault and nail it or her team would not get the gold at that Olympics. So she braved the pain and did that vault -- giving the USA team the gold. She had to be carried off, and the pain of the whole incident was incredible for her. But that is what being part of a team used to mean. It's also what the years of training and conditioning prepared her to do. She was truly a hero and teammate that day!!!!
Now we are a society of snowflakes. Simone Biles needed to "suck it up" and bring up all the strength (physical and mental) that she had in her to do this competition for her teammates!!!!! As soon as the team competition was over, she could leave and go deal with her "demons" in private. But, instead, she let her team down. At 24, she has been training and conditioning herself far more than the average 17-year-old doing this sport. She truly was the greatest for her moves. But when it came down to it, she folded and cost her team the gold (and realistically millions of dollars in endorsements that come with being gold medal winners). She knew she had mental problems before the Olympics, but instead of giving up her spot and dealing with her issues, she pulled this stunt. The people we really need to be giving our sympathy and support to are her teammates.
