The progressive press had a field day with "woke" Walmart highly publicized February decision to hikes wages for 425,000 workers to an average above $15 an hour. We doubt the obvious follow up - the ongoing stealthy replacement of many of its minimum wage workers with machines - will get the same amount of airtime. As Chain Store Age reports, Walmart is applying artificial intelligence to the palletizing of products in its regional distribution centers. I.e., it is replacing thousands of workers with robots.Since 2017, the discount giant has worked with Symbotic to optimize an automated technology solution to sort, store, retrieve and pack freight onto pallets in its Brooksville, Fla.,

More obvious is the replacement of checkout clerks with self checkout.

Walmart's plan is to one-up Amazon with SAME-day delivery.by including all of it's retail stores under the distribution-center organization. I forget the exact number but something like 80% of the American population lives within 30 miles of a Walmart. You order it, your zip code is linked to the nearest store, and the truck is on it's way.

The worst part about shopping at Walmart has ALWAYS been that they have about 1/2 the number of checkout clerks as they need. And now they cut that down even more, forcing you to go and play video games to get out.

Agree #1
Even more obvious is that out of 32 checkout lanes 4 have clerks and 12 are self serve.
So your self serve checkout clerks (customers) pay you instead of you paying them.
Bich and moan about Amazon but when I can order a $4 item and it's at my door tomorrow, I like it.
If Walmart can top that then fine because I'm not paying Biden's 4 buck gasoline to go get it.

#3 - I doubt at this late stage in the game Wal-Mart can pull this off against Amazon. They are going to have to turn each store into a distribution center with that plan, and the overhead for this would be cost prohibitive.
I definitely welcome the competition for Amazon though, who really doesn't have that good of a price on most things anymore since they monopolized the 'catalog' industry. I hope that W-M can pull it off, but I am very skeptical right now.

I honestly prefer self-checkout. It's the only way I am certain that I am walking out of the store with everything rung up correctly!!!
However, my local Wally-World went to all self-checkout terminals. Like I said, I wouldn't have a problem with that, except that at least half of them are out of service most of the time. I don't know if it is technical problems, but when I go in the middle of the day when the store is not crowded, and still have to wait in line for 10 to 15+ minutes because only 5 or 6 of 25 self-checkout terminals is working, that is a problem!!!!

They better do something about their distribution because it sucks right now. The three Walmarts in my area have nothing on the shelves and nothing seems to be coming in. Canned goods, etc.
They have a house brand of sparkling water with a favor that flies off the shelves when they have it. Talked to the grocery manager about ordering more and was told they could request as much as they wanted, but they get whatever corporate sends. His next shipment was scheduled to be ONE CASE.

Yes, it stinks but fact is, rural communities all over my state depend on Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. In my TX area, the parking lots are still full. Where my relatives are in S Texas, they are busy 24/7. I hate the trimming down of CHOICES in every supermarket. Our local Aldi’s has gotten increasingly popular because between our HEB and Aldi’s, we have some better choices and can find old favorites. HEB was one of the first to take My Pillow off store shelves so I am expecting more nonsense from them too.

Sorry for the PS but my point is I can order a $4 plastic car part and tomorrow there it is on my door. If $4 is outrageous because AutoZone sells it for $2.50 how much of my time and Biden's 4 buck gasoline (so far) ... get my drift.

I avoid Walmart whenever possible because of what they have done to small towns. They move in, open one of their superstores, sell stuff for less than the Mom and Pop stores can buy it. The put all the Mom and Pop stores out of business. Then they close their superstore and move and all you have left are ghost towns. I use amazon but am not totally happy with them. One thing I loved but haven't found in decades is hamburger relish which used to be made by Heinz. amazon had a seller for hamburger relish and I started to order around $ 70 worth of the stuff. But then I read a review on amazon that said their shipment was damaged in transit and they refused replacements or refunds. The worst experiene I had with amazon was I ordered something for $35, waited a month, and when it arrived all I had was a box filled with bubble wrap. Nothing else. amazon wouldn't refund or ever let me post a negative review.

I do my own shopping at Walmart but hear people who do pick up orders complaining that so many things have substitutions and most times are not usable. Also the produce is almost not eatable. I will stand in line for check out and find that when I do it myself, I usually double check at least one item. Not sure why, maybe because I don't like to do it. I will do self checkout at Sams because items are larger and easier to scan.

Ask for too much money, or cause too much trouble, and you will be replaced with automation. I fully expect to see the burger flippers heading to obsolecence within a decade.

Paying Bezos to destroy the country because "it's convenient" is the height of folly.
Old communist saying, "The capitalist will sell you the rope that you will use to hang him."
Yep. Clearly or buy from the people who hate your guts and are working overtime to destroy the country.

I hate WalMart and Mr Sam was not all he bragged to be. Remember the lie about nothing made in China that didn't last long ?
The local Wally World had two cashiers with long lines. The rest are self serve. One night it took 45 minutes, a lead and two managers to check out.

The good news is that you are getting a raise. The bad news is that you have two weeks notice.
