Governor Abbott threatened to defund the Texas Legislature after Texas Democrats walked out of the legislative session rather than take a vote on election reform laws. When they broke quorum and shut down the session, Abbott said that if legislators weren’t going to do their jobs, they shouldn’t be paid. Friday Abbott made good on that threat.
The elections bill was a top priority for the governor during this year’s session. Texas Democrats decided to cut and run, breaking quorum, instead of voting on Senate Bill 7. They knew that the Republicans had the votes to pass the legislation – both the Texas House and the Texas Senate hold Republican majorities.

I sure wish Gov. Abbott had grown these brass cajones back during the early stages of the Coronavirus. But he is definitely winning back my support!!!
This was another "Abortion Barbie" stunt that just cost the taxpayers millions of dollars by forcing a special session of the legislature. But when has a Demon-Rat ever cared about wasting tax dollars -- it's what they do best!!!

Best thing you can do to most government. Defund it.

Sen. Rick Scott proposed the same for Congress and it went nowhere. Good for Abbott.

If they want their staff to be paid, then they will show up and do their jobs. The governor is right: no work, no food.

Not that I care a whit about legislatures not getting paid; I think most of them don't need to be there along with the year round staff, but what about those who ARE doing their jobs? Do they also get punished with the evil rats, so no one is singled out? Abbott IS running for re-election, poster #3.

Democrats are like the spoiled kid who took his baseball and went home when he was not allowed to control the entire game and change the rules to guarantee he always won.

Staff not getting paid is function of how the bill was set up he didn’t sign. It’s also leverage to get them to come back and do their jobs. I’m content to sit and watch this play out. Texas had a lot on their plate - the Bill to fix out electric grid, Covid (some members tested positive even after the jab and had to quarantine), and they finally changed procedural rules so next session they can file bills earlier and work on them earlier. This session they weren’t even able (by procedural law) to file a bill until relatively late in the session - something like a month. And when you’re there only 5 months every two years, it’s pretty important to stay, fight or accept defeat and no run like a spineless coward.

I believe this is the second time the Texas Dims have done that. The first time they fled the state to Oklahoma I believe. The Wisconsin Dims the same a few years ago. Seems like the Dim philosophy is cut and run when they can’t get their way….how liberal adult of them.

The Democrats thought they had a clever way to stop legislation they don’t happen to like. They got their hats handed to them. That Republican majority is there for a reason. It’s what the people voted for. Liberals are well known for running roughshod over voters. They’ve just been stopped. Great job Governor.

The Texas legislators have day jobs because their legislator salaries are a whopping $7,200/year. A greeter at Walmart would laugh at this. While Abbott's move to suspend their salaries is noble, I rather doubt their missing a pay period of a below-poverty level wage like this will cause any of them to blink an eye.

Yes, #16, but the cowardly democrats will now have to explain to their staff why they will not be paid for two years!
I would like to be a fly on the wall for that!

What’s a good democrat to do? Remain MIA from the TX legislature and lose the ability to line one’s pockets with taxpayer money, or return to the session and risk being Vince Fostered by the Party of Davos? Decisions, decisions…

Does Texas budget in arrears? It would seem the money for this session of the legislature was appropriated already in '20-'21 budget, and now obligated. How does one veto that? The budget sent to the Governor was for the '22-'23 biennium, wasn't it? FY21 doesn't end until August 31.
This will be interesting. "No pay for those who abandon their responsibilities." And no pay for those who stuck around, either, I'm sure Republican legislators and staff are cheering. And what will be the cost to the state of litigation?
Politics has a way of boomeranging, and this "defunding" will be a classic. It's like shutting down the Federal government...no one ever goes without except the public that pays for days and weeks of work not done and the usual suspects howl on both sides. Abbott has a couple of bulletholes in his political feet already. This could prove another.

The legislators may be paid low, but the staff are not.
They will employ the spouse as an assistant for $50K a year and they other staff besides. These legislators have offices that are open year round with paid staff. This will hurt them because, especially democrats, want the staff to get the pandering done.

Abbott is all hat and no cattle. He is getting that hat handed to him by DeSantis making him look like a fool causing Texas to follow and not lead. The grassroots is turning against Abbott and he has serious contenders for re-election so therefore he showboating. Do not be fooled.
