'd like to take a rational look at the confrontations among cops, motorists, and pedestrians.
When we see incidents of cops shooting blacks (which are the only shootings the media cover), one thing becomes clear: resisting arrest often ends up with a loss of life. Something else is obvious: when a cop is the one losing his life, it's practically overlooked by the media.
When a police officer, whether during a traffic stop or a street stop, is making an arrest, the person being arrested has no right to resist.

I keep hearing that the GOP doesn't have any answers to "blacks getting killed by cops". I'm tired of it. Obey the law, don't resist or fight the police, do what you are supposed to do and you will not require the cops to draw their guns. Its so simple yet ignored its pathetic!

During a traffic stop, turn off the car. Put your keys on the roof. Turn on interior light if it's dark out and put your hands on the steering wheel. Wait for the officer to arrive before looking for documents. Don't fidget around until the cop walks up and tells you what to do.
Doing that puts the officer at ease and de-escalates the situation from the outset.

It starts way back....have good parents. Then don't do crimes which bring criminal records and arrest warrants. That way you won't have to resist law enforcement. Again, have good parents.

#3, it goes back farther than that - men actually marrying their baby mamas and being a positive influence in their children’s lives would take care of the problem.
But then the baby mamas wouldn’t get all of those entitlements every month.

FTA:
"The problem arises when people, evidently thinking they're above the law, refuse to obey the officer's directions."
That's certainly part of it but here's what I believe to be the real story that will remain hidden deep in the bowels of "extremist" hangouts like Lucianne:
Blacks have been victimized by the gaslighting leftist smug Hollier than thou elitists in the media and both political parties and believe that when they are pulled over there's a good chance they will be shot and killed for sport. That belief would make any rational person inclined to resist let alone one with something to hide. They have coiled the spring tightly and secured it with a thread then act mystified when somebody gets hurt.
Geraldo Rivera is a perfect example. That arrogant little twit is so full of himself and confident in his superior perch of knowledge he is oblivious to the blood dripping from his own hands. In fact he is incapable of applying common sense to the situation by pondering the reason no genuinely innocent black victim has made the calendar for victims of the month and every rallying cry surrounds a felon resisting arrest. He chooses to ignore the data from every honest study seeking to prove police racial discrimination yet proves the opposite. As a journalist his job is to question those results if he believes the process was flawed, look for the flaws and report on them. No he just ignores it and fans the flames of hatred contributing to the mayhem. I prefer to believe that this is a byproduct of his hubris opposed to him simply being an evil person. Knowingly or unknowingly he is on the side of evil and points at the likes of me as the problem.

The black community is being fed a line of crap, and half of them believe it. There is a whole litany of lies:
- Blacks are entitled to reparations.
- All whites are racist.
- Because all blacks are victims of racism and oppression, any crimes and transgressions should be overlooked.
- All cops are out to kill blacks.
- Blacks must resist and fight back.
These lies keep getting blacks killed. The black community is being used and they need to wise up. There are people out there that want the black community to be radicalized and rioting. They don't care if you get killed. They just want you to be on the frontline of their 'revolution'. There will be no rewards however.
Nobody is out to kill blacks, but there are people out there using them for their own purposes. Again, the black community needs to wise up.

#6 Senor Jerry Rivers is merely a flambouyant opportunist playing devil's advocate for fame and fortune. He and Juan Williams, would be just another commentator if it were not for his contraversial statements. He gets air time to be outrageous, inflame viewers and provide targets for the home team. They are entertainers with large paychecks.

Thank you, Bob Weir, for your service. And for reminding me to tell my nephews (retired policemen) how proud I am of them.

When I was 16 or 17 years old and had just gotten my drivers license my dad sat me down and told me that if I get pulled over by the cops you don't get smart mouth with them. You say yes sir and no sir when they ask you questions because if you argue with them you will lose and over the course of my 70 years on this earth I have always found that to have been very good advice. Ive always wondered why so many black guys want to play tough guy and end up losing their life because of it. I realize that there has been much prejudice against black people but that is what lawyers are for. Fight it out in court and live another day.

What's the worst that can happen when you are polite to a cop? You get a small fine as a reminder to behave a little better and go a little slower next time. The cop is usually right because he has radar and access to your driving records and history of violations. Why risk having an incompetent cop confront you not knowing the difference between a 9 mil and something that looks like a TV remote?

When stopped by a policeman for a traffic stop listen to instruction and follow them. Don't act stupid like challenging the stop and displaying hatred for the act of being stopped. Don't give the policeman any reason to draw his gun or use a taser you will lose.

Get stopped? Just do whatever the officer says...if you have a problem you can iron it out in court if need be...but man, comon, don't pull a gun or fight them...(so says a cop of 30 years)

Good advice and information that I have heard from police officer friends many times over the years.
All say domestic disturbance calls are the worst, and 'watch out for the beat up wife, she's liable to stick a butcher knife in your back if you try to arrest hubby'.
FTA:
"Let me tell you the lesson every cop learns if he lives long enough. That is, anyone willing to fight a cop is very likely to kill him in order to escape. I've scuffled with men who tried to grab my gun during the encounters. If they had gotten it out of my holster, I wouldn't be here to write about it."
THAT is something that most people just don't grasp.
Repeat: "Anyone willing to fight a cop is very likely to kill him in order to escape." Yes. Very true.
An officer friend told me that in the Police Academy, they specifically taught them, "When you are in the uniform, if you lose a fight, you will almost certainly be killed. You cannot lose a fight."

A cop stopped me one evening. He said I was driving erratically. I told him "As a courtesy I am stating that I have a CCW." He asked me where in the car was the gun. I pointed to my back pack, which was next to me.
The cop said OK, "you don't shoot me and I won't shoot you."
We then discussed the reason for the stop, after which he said I could proceed.

#15, I was once stopped for having an expired inspection sticker and I did what you did, just as my CCP instructor had told us to do. The police know if you have a permit because it comes up when they run your license plate number. But the instructor told us to tell the policeman anyway because it increases trust between the two of you.
After I had informed the officer of my permit, he asked if I was carrying and I told him that I was not. His response was, “Why not? As an older woman you should always carry”. Lesson learned!

I think Chris Rock made a hilarious and very helpful video on this topic, years ago. I can't remember if the original Ebonics version was close-captioned in English.

An interesting corollary is what typically happens when you stop an off duty LEO from ma neighboring jurisdiction or another state. Once the strobes come on, most LEOs will immediately pull over to the right of a roadway, have their window down, interior light on, and hands on the steering wheel at the 10-2 position, waiting to be contacted by the officer who pulled them over. When reaching for ID and/or registration, it is first plainly stated and the movements are slow. Typically, when removing the ID/DL, you can catch a glimpse of the badge attached to the wallet. Usually, when you see that behavior when pulling someone over, the first question you ask is "are you on the job?," which began as a regional phrase (NY, Philly) but is now universally translated among LEOs as "are you a fellow LEO?"

The author just told the whole story in a tea cup. Those who comply with police instructions and do not resist arrest do not get killed during encounters with the police. But once the fighting starts anything that can go wrong could go wrong as we just saw again in Minnesota.

Those who resist arrest are 100% responsible for any consequences. A lot of really stupid people have been convinced by the media that it's OK to ignore this. Too bad for them.
