Schools Aren't Super-Spreaders

In early August, the first kids in America went back to school during the pandemic. Many of these openings happened in areas where cases were high or growing: in Georgia, Indiana, Florida. Parents, teachers, and scientists feared what might happen next. (Snip) We are starting to get an evidence-based picture of how school reopenings and remote learning are going (those photos of hallways don’t count), and the evidence is pointing in one direction. Schools do not, in fact, appear to be major spreaders of COVID-19.

Dear me - from the Atlantic no less. I work in a university library and am 70. I've been working since the 'rona first appeared and am not in the least bit scared. I'm not crazy or foolhardy and so far I am fine. My grandchildren are in a hybrid program at their schools and no one has gotten sick in their schools. The superintendent wants to go back to full instruction after the Christmas break. I hope they do - my grandson in particular needs to be there.

But, according to Willie Brown, Kamala Harris is.

What gives with school administrator closing schools (for a week or more) because one student gets the virus?

Teachers I know are beyond frustration with the added workload (where "hybrid" means twice the prep) and the poor results. I take this piece in its publication by The Atlantic, as a sign that the dam is about to burst, and the schools (and the economy) are about to chuck all this covid nonsense asap.
Just in time for the next, normal flu season, dontcha know.

The problem with schools opening is that their teachers are mainly liberals, and liberals are terrified of covid (based on the Gallup poll).

Open the schools. Administer the vaccines, first to the most at risk, then to the rest of us. Remove the COVID restrictions so more businesses won't go under. Punish China for their crime against all of humanity.

#3, fear of lawsuits, which is what a large part of the panic driven restrictions are about.

I would totally disagree with this idea that schools aren't germ factories. When my kids were in school, we as a family caught all the current bugs, but then they graduated and the next year was amazing. We had no flu, no serious colds or bronchitis that year. Time to start with the home schooling and keep our kids out of these schools. Give their minds some real education, and there are plenty of parental support groups to help parents who want to do just that.

Sorry, I should have added to my comment the thought that maybe they aren't spreaders of covid, but they are spreaders of every bug that comes down the freeway.

Wow these genius' finally figured out that what we knew like four months ago is true. This comes of approaching things with either fear or an ideological bend.

Sweden never closed their elementary schools - just the high schools & colleges. They did fine. FTA: for the week ending on September 27, with 1,080,317 students estimated at school—a rate of about 0.14 percent. The staff rate was lower, about 0.10 percent. These numbers are not zero, which for some people means the numbers are not good enough. But zero was never a realistic expectation. As for home school - kids need other kids. They need to interact in rough & tumble play with other kids. It takes 10,000 hours of interaction face to face with other humans to learn how to socialize & navigate the social world. Read Dr. Jean Piaget - the great developmental psychologist.

Darned facts interrupting "the narrative"!
This was proven to be the case in European schools. Not surprising that it is the same here.

Consider the source, and consider that the author herself is from Brown University. The evidence must be compelling that open schools are safe, and that "remote learning" is about as effective as putting your school books under your pillow at night.
