Jimmy Galligan was in history class last school year when his phone buzzed with a message. Once he clicked on it, he found a three-second video of a white classmate looking into the camera and uttering an anti-Black racial slur. (Snip) “I wanted to get her where she would understand the severity of that word,” Galligan, 18, whose mother is Black and father is white, said of the classmate who uttered the slur, Mimi Groves. He tucked the video away, deciding to post it publicly when the time was right.

It sounds to me like she used the N-word in the same way rappers and other urban youth use it, not as a slur directed at anyone specific. Not that that makes it acceptable, but I don’t think her intent was racist. That someone would hold on to that waiting for the best opportunity to wreck her life for that is disgusting. Social media is a toxic wasteland, and the cancel culture is real and devastating.

A word only has the power you give it. Why give someone that power over you? Sticks and stones, people. I learned that when I was very young. It’s still valid today. Time to grow up.

I am so glad that this loser weasel is so perfect that he has never said or done anything even remotely bad in his life.
But when he does, as we all do, I hope it is plastered all over the Internet until we read about his "tragic suicide". Pure scum!!!!

What happens to blacks when they call whites crackers???? Nothing. While I don't use the n word if they call me a racist I keep on walking. I had enough of the word.

As punishment for being 'offended', no matter what they hear, they should have to write 10,000 times, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me." And if they assault someone because they were offended, they should also be caned 10 strokes, once a week, for a month.

The student who posted the video is like neighbors in the Soviet Union who snitched on their neighbors so they would be sent to the GULAG. Too bad it has come to this here.

Another point. You have a problem with what I say, voice it then and there, and get context. Ambushing this girl, years later is criminal in its own right. I got called lots of names when I was in elementary school and Junior high that the same people wouldn't think of using in High School as young adults.
I don't like what the girl did, but I'm not sure what the boy did wasn't worse.

White people cannot walk the street at night in many parts of Chicago; Washington, DC; Los Angeles; St. Louis, etc, lest they be shot because of their skin color. Being addressed by a forbidden word pales in comparison.
I eagerly await the day when will blacks rise up and condemn their fellow blacks for over their blatant, overt. hateful racism.

It seems to me the use of the n-word was fading until it became fashionable and was revived by blacks.

During a Zoom discussion at my church, a man used the word "redneck." I told him I thought that word was offensive. I think he did it deliberately to get the discussion going. He moved to our area from another state and I think he feels we are a bunch of country bumpkins. I would never post this on social media and ruin this person's life.

Equality and justice are not the goal;it is a sordid vengeance, hatred. I see it when I stumble across CNN and MSNBC. Militant blacks, mostly women, demanding punitive action against whites and minority conservatives for no reason other than hate.

Galligan is a gutless jerk. If he were that offended, he should have discussed it with Groves and resolved the situation then and there. But he is so obsessed with race that he carried this to an extreme. Obviously, he is a Democrat and probably has no friends and with good cause. I wouldn’t touch this guy with a ten foot pole.

Since 2008, that word has been used in my house even when its isn't applicable. The constitution still reigns supreme in my house. All of it. Tell me I cant say what I want, but you better be smiling and showing empty hands.

Our society has become evil. I agree with #1 that her intent was probably just kidding around to sound like the hip hop kids. For this to destroy a person's life is reprehensible. And the fact that he sat on the video for 4 to 5 years before releasing it is horrible. What happened to people getting second chances? What happened to turning the other cheek? What happened to decency and compassion? What is with all this "I am offended by..." what happened to MATURITY?? People and society as a whole is becoming evil. Pure evil. I don't condone the use of any hurtful epithet, racial or otherwise (except when criticizing evil), but it shouldn't be used as a retaliatory weapon either. The cancel culture is destroying us and . I wish we could go back 50+ years and start all over again. The Lord does not like ugly, and we are becoming very ugly in how we treat people.

Teenagers do and say stupid things. Then they grow up. Kicking her out of college because of something she said 5 years ago is reprehensible. The college should be sued for that.

I read the NYT readers' comments after the article last night. It was--enlightening. Most of the comments trashed Galligan for hanging on to the video for months in order to maximize the damage to this one girl's life. He took a comment that was not directed to him, or to any other person of color, and turned it into a very personal vendetta against her. Many of the commenters thought that this will haunt him when he starts applying for jobs. I mean, who would want this vicious little snitch in their workforce, watching and waiting for an opportunity to avenge some imaginary slight?

Gilligan has an easy entry on his resume. "I will snitch." Proof: he already did.
The "N-word" is in regular use among our youth culture, our music culture, and can be found in many writings (up until 20 years ago). When I taught in DC, it was the method by which some young adults customarily addressed other young adults. Most lyrics "performed" by rap musicians cannot be written out, because of the "n-word". How the young people learn them is a mystery to me.
We can no longer read Huckleberry Finn. We cannot read "The N* of the Narcissus." We cannot read "To Kill A Mockingbird." A word has been deemed so hateful that it will destroy the very life of the person who hears it.
A person in the DC Government lost his job for using the word n***ly (it means stingy).
Mark Fuhrman lost the OJ case by using the "n-word" and getting caught by some lawyer.
There are many words which offend me as a Christian, having been COMMANDED not to take the Name of the Lord in vain. Do I get attention? No. I am ignored. My Lord is slandered and demeaned daily, and I cannot object.
This whole thing has left the land of the unlikely and entered the surreal.
Someone will have to prove to me that the use of one particular word at one particular time in one's life marks one forever as bad.

Yes, #25, and only blacks are allowed to define it. On top of that, only they get to intuit others use and definition of it.

She gets trashed, in the state whose governor is nicknamed "Governor Blackface" but whom the Democratic Party embraces. Redemption is only for the Select, as the NYT alludes to by writing, "whose mother is Black and father is white," white in this context meaning chopped liver.
