Daunte Wright was pulled over for expired plates, although he told his mother it was because an air freshener hung from his rearview mirror. Sandra Bland was pulled over for failing to use her turn signal. Philando Castile was pulled over for a broken taillight. You know what happened next. The two men were shot dead by police, and Bland died in jail a few days after she was verbally abused by the Texas state trooper who screamed, “I will light you up!” when she refused to get out of her car. None of these Black citizens posed a threat
Bravo Sierra. Remember “Broken windows” policing and how NYC came back from the brink.

Motor vehicle laws are written so nobody can drive more the 200 feet with violating something. I live and am surrounded by jurisdictions that write tickets

Sorry about that, I live in area where cops write tickets for not keeping both hands on the wheel, chips in windshields, 1 mile over etc. It’s nothing but a revenue grab by all these municipalities that should have been unincorporated years ago.

Criminals don’t obey any laws, so the easiest way to find a criminal or someone who has an outstanding arrest warrant is to stop violators of traffic laws. (I read this somewhere.)

I have a better idea. If your taillight is broken, get it fixed. Pay your license fees in time. If you do get stopped, be polite and do what the officer asks.

I don't think there is a single instance of a police involved shooting where the motorist didn't become belligerent, a**hole, frequently because of open warrants, suspended DL, or other matters.
It needs to be said: stop the car, keep your hands in view, put down your phone (it may appear to be a gun in the dark) and follow directions. Some people will never understand that.

Wright had time to call his mom while being pulled over? Besides, police aren't going to stop anyone for having an air freshener on the rear view mirror. I was pulled over by a black cop for merging into the lane too early. The only car around was the cop car, which I had already passed. Total BS stop. I wonder if this cop belongs to BLM.

I guess I'm lucky not to have lived or worked in an area where revenue generation is a major part of a police officers job, although I suspect the washington state patrol is very much in that mode today.
Minor traffic or equipment violations for me were usually warnings or notifications (taillight out, etc), that could change in a heartbeat based on the drivers attitude. They were also probable cause stops, lane straddling, rolling stops and so on that gave me reason to run the license plate of the vehicle which would give me warrant information associated with the plate. Expired tabs often indicated a lack of insurance as well, which I did always write for.
In short, I put a lot of felons in jail because of a minor traffic or equipment violation. I'm sorry for those of you that live in a jurisdiction where the cops or their bosses are cs but someone previously mentioned broken windows policing - it works.

"Most American drivers eventually come into contact with police as a result of traffic stops, and most don't have to fear for their lives. But there is every reason for people of color to feel unsafe when they see red lights in their rearview mirrors."
Nonsense. No reasonably law-abiding citizen has any reason to fear the police. The author's premise is bull pucky.

Back in my cop days I had a theory that nobody could drive one mile without committing at least one offense they could be pulled over for. Nobody ever proved me wrong. It could be a minor defect like a license plate light out, or going left of center on a curve, or a couple miles and hour speeding in an area where it doesn't matter. It could be anything. There are too many laws. The first one I would get rid of is seat belt laws. Sure, its a good idea to wear them and may save your life, but its none of the government's business.

Hello chaos, hello anarchy. I guess we'll just unpass all the laws. We have elected officials that don't bother to enforce the law now. Rioters and violent protests get passes, get out of jail passes. So we will do away with legislatures and unpass the laws that exist.

I think tail lights are only a safety standard. Safety standards can be safely ignored as long you wear your mask.
License plates are just a revenue thing. Are we going to risk killing people for a few dollars? As long as you wear a mask it could be ignored.

My department had an official policy of allowing motorists 9 mph over the posted speed limit before enforcement action was taken and absolutely no quotas to meet. I stretched that to 15 over and still had plenty of violators. I never relied on my radar gun but looked at how the vehicle was proceeding through traffic. In stopping only the most egregious speeders and reckless driving violators, a substantial percentage had multiple active warrants, many of them for serious felonies. Many blue cities no longer make arrests for theft, theft of service, or disorderly conduct, which is a policy intended to reduce police contact with blacks. Soon, it will be official policy to ignore black criminality, period. That hasn't worked so well with ignoring crimes committed by our out-of-control "migrant" population. The creation of permanent democrats seems to be an emerging national policy and nothing shall impede their voting "rights," not even a conviction for capital murder.

Yep, make running red lights, no tail lights, no brake lights, expired license plates and all that stuff legal. The hoods in the hood don't like paying for that stuff anyway.
Sounds like a perfect slide into anarchy and 3rd world status.

can't quite agree. it is common knowledge that most of the best arrests are made because of a motor vehicle violation or, traffic stop as some people would categorize them. bad guys are usually at ease in a motor vehicle and are unaware that the slightest traffic violation could involve interaction with a police officer. the next thing that has to be done is to convince people, both white, black, brown or whatever, not to fight back against the police officer because once an officer tells a person that they are under arrest, the police officer is compelled by law to bring the arrested person into the judicial process. the bottom line is, the deterioration of respect for everyone is ballooning out of control and has to stop, once that happens we might see some kind of equilibrium in the social commentary.

Abcarian is a flaming liberal from way back… Daunte was not shot because his plates had expired. He was shot because - aware that the officers knew there was a warrant out for his arrest - he resisted arrest and tried to drive off…
On another topic, liberal media are in the process of canonizing a fine Kenrucky basketball player who apparently was headed for a great future in the NBA. Having signed a contract with a sports agent in Chatsworth, CA, he was on his way. He sped - at great speed, it’s reported - through a red light, clipping a truck making a left turn, and spun into a post and then a wall. Dead. He has no one to blame but himself. Neither did Daunte.

Anything that inconveniences blacks must be discontinued. Laws, dress codes, educational requirements, standard working hours, etc. Any law that blacks and illegal aliens frequently break must be thrown out and bad behavior legalized. "Room to destroy" must be codified so that the irritated and disrespected POC citizens and anarchists amongst us can tear up their own cities and the neighboring suburbs with impunity. Have I left anything out?

Ok. Let's say police stop stopping black motorists for things like bad light, expired plates, and other "minor " offenses. Let's say they just mail tickets. Those tickets are then unpaid and the person's car gets impounded. The person also get a warrant for arrest for unpaid tickets. Also. In the meantime a whole bunch of vehicle crashes occur due to things like burnt-out turn signals burnt-out head lights, and other safety issues. The no stops for registration will lead to many of these accidents not being covered by insurance as nobody has bothered to check coverage. What could go wrong?

Daunte Wright was pulled over because of expired car registration—because the police officer was doing as she was instructed by her police leadership, who was responding to city/state politician requests.....that is, focusing on drivers with expired plates and registration.
It seems that Minneapolis has a problem. Something like 700,000 Minneapolis residents have not bothered to renew their Minnesota car registration/plates. Whether because the motor vehicle department was closed down due to COVID, or because people were just using COVID as an excuse for not following the law, the fact is Minneapolis was having a serious scofflaw problem, and the state was missing the revenue. So the police were being told to crack down on drivers without valid registration/plates.
Of course, the lying LeftMedia will never tell you this, and will instead blame the police for stopping Daunte Wright.
If police are now told not to stop motorists for minor car registration offenses, then the only people in Minnesota with valid car registration/plates will be the WHITE people.

Hogwash, #2, at least in Kansas. The last time I was stopped was about 15 years ago for speeding....when I missed a change down from 45 to 35 on an unfamiliar road. Before that ....I don't even remember. Keep your license plates up to date, keep your lights all working (I replaced a fog lamp bulb just yesterday on one vehicle) and you'll be fine.

Mama! Mama! Whitey's pulled me over for hanging an air freshener on my rear view mirror!
I don't believe it. Either mama is lying or the author is. Maybe both are lying. Does perpetuating a lie make one a liar?
What are the odds the author wants to do away with the rule of law, wants to defund the police, and a member of the Communist hate group BLM?
As for the police, they operate in a certain manner. Expecting them to behave differently is a mistake. Drive around with a broken turn signal, expect to be pulled over. Its inevitable. Ignore a warrant, and expect to be arrested. Speed through a speed trap where state troopers routinely have 4 or 5 cars pulled over for speeding, expect the same to happen to you.
Are the police being used to generate revenue? Yep. Try not to do anything that gets their attention.
Can the police be incompetent, clueless, temperamental, violent, and worse? Yep. It part of human nature.
Is the rule of law setup in such a manner to catch anyone including law abiding citizens? Yep. its called control.
Anyone need a reminder that the police are ARMED? Be polite folks. Picking a fight with the police is irrational. If you manage to win one fight, its a guarantee there will be many more police after you in response.

Why not have minors not violate traffic laws and commit minor offenses, so they want be stopped by the police? Why not avoid attacking the police and making it a major offense? These options should be on the table.

No. That is NOT what happened next. What happened NEXT was some hare-brained move by the motorists that created the response by the officer(s) involved.
The author would have us believe these people were pulled over and summarily executed. BS.

No one likes being pulled over for minor offenses. But driving around with burned out tail lights or a cracked windshield can be hazardous. Expired license plates could mean the auto is not properly insured or may be stolen.
