A 'very senior' female police officer who shot dead a 20-year-old black man during a traffic stop in Minneapolis accidentally fired her gun instead of her taser during a struggle, the police chief says. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon on Monday described the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright as 'an accidental discharge' after his death sparked violent protests less than 10 miles from where the trial of Derek Chauvin, the white Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd, is taking place.(Snip) The female officer could be heard shouting 'Taser!' several times in the moments before she fired her gun.

This is what happens when you focus on filling out diversity boxes instead of qualifications.

For comparison, Joe Biden is also 'very senior.'

When encountering police officers do not resist. If u resist chances are things will not end nice for the perp. Accidents happen.

Oh the registration was expired did it and people already believe it was because of an air freshener hanging off the rear view mirror.
It would seem to me that unless deliberate measures are taken, mistake proofing if you will, in the heat of the moment stuff happens. This has me wondering how the two devices could possibly draw the same way from the same general location and feel similar enough to not make it damned difficult to be wrong.

Has there ever been a police shooting where the "victim" didn't have a criminal record, outstanding warrants or resist arrest?

Shouting Taser Taser Taser could easily mean she wanted the other officers to taser the victim. A loaded hand gun weighs at least 4 times as much as a taser. Don't tell me this senior sergeant didn't know what she was holding. Not murder just criminal incompetence I suppose but I'll wait for more facts like what was the outstanding warrant for ?

Police officers can make mistakes just as easily as anyone else, and they have guns. Want to stay alive? Do as the police say. Otherwise you could die.

OOPS, now the MPD discovered that many folk's brains don't work at all during high stress.....especially those who have never been in a fight before, which includes a very large percentage of women. The solution to 'errors under stress' is lots of stressful training, which is often not done.
If this turns out to be true.....then the solution is to take away the stupid, worthless tasers, go back to billy clubs. Never going to mistake a gun for a billy club.
And maybe some better, more frequent firearms training? Gotta be pretty incompetent to not be able to tell a handgun grip from a taser grip. WAY different feel. But, you might forget from year to year, when you never touch the gun except for annual qualification. And how many officers (especially female officers) think guns are "icky" so stay away from them as much as possible? Yeah, that's a stereotype,
but true in many cases.
A friend who was a local police department firearms training officer for 20 years once told me, as we chatted at a pistol match, "The average police officer is just as 'into' his firearm as he is 'into' his belt radio, or his 'pepper spray', which is to say, he is entirely uninterested in it. And neither of them will get him into as much trouble, so many are somewhat afraid of their firearms."

Dramatic differences in size, shape and weight. The older Tasers had an even MORE different grip shape, much more like a flashlight. I would suggest that THIS would be a much safer design for the Taser to go back to.

Still.....DO NOT fight with the police, you will NOT win and you are likely to wind up seriously hurt or dead. Beyond stupid.

They would not even have those useless tasers if they were not forced to hire woman who do not have the strength to use nightsticks.

Well the cop here in Nashville got himself shot when he tasered that woman who was resisting and was actively reaching back into her car. Thankfully he lived. Cops can't catch a break.

Would the public and media reaction be different if (a) the driver had been white, (b) both the driver and the officer had been black, (c) the officer had been a black male and the driver had been a white female, (d) the driver had been black and the officer had been a native American, (e) the driver had been a female native American and the officer had been a black female (etc.)? Are situations with identical facts different depending on race and gender?

Did the bullet kill him or did Daunte's crashing the car kill him? Nobody knows for sure. This is tragedy that could have been prevented if the female police office knew the difference between a taser and a gun. Also, Duante is not totally blameless here. Struggling with the police and trying to get away is not the wisest of choices. Also, why wasn't the car properly registered and proof of insurance present as required. This tragedy is being made even worse by the reaction of the feral mob destroying their own community over something that appears to be an accident (a dumb one but still an accident).

Back when we carried S&W Model 19s (.357 wheel guns)on duty, there was no way to mistake its grip and balance for the plastic grip of a police taser. The Glock she fired is too similar in feel to the taser. Most real Po-lice had no use for a taser in lieu of an impact weapon, like an ASP baton or even a large D-cell flashlight.

So she yelled “Taser, taser, taser”. Is that like little kids saying “Phew, phew, phew” when they play cops and robbers?
I’ll better she wasn’t the top cadet at the academy.

Any Marine Rifleman will tell you that there is no such thing as an accidental discharge. Weapons are either intentionally or negligently discharged.
They don’t go off by accident.

The story has changed; first it was an air freshener, now it's an expired registration. Maybe we should go back to hiring people most qualified for the job at hand, instead of recruiting by race, sex, sexual preferences, etc. And certainly if a person is being pulled over by the police, like Daunte was, he should not flee the police, crash, and resist arrest. Daunte also should not have been driving around with a warrant out for his arrest.
