Thomas Steven Sanders, a convicted child murderer whose federal death sentence was commuted by Joe Biden in December 2024 through his autopen, has been indicted for first-degree murder by a Louisiana grand jury.
Sanders was originally sentenced to death in 2014 for the 2010 kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Lexis Roberts of Las Vegas.

District Judge James Boasberg has issued an opinion stating that he has found probable cause that the federal government was in criminal contempt by refusing to comply with his order prohibiting certain deportations under the Alien Enemies Act.
“The Court ultimately determines that the Government’s actions ... demonstrate a willful disregard for its Order, sufficient for the Court to conclude that probable cause exists to find the Government in criminal contempt,” Boasberg said in an April 16 opinion.

A federal judge on Wednesday said he has found probable cause to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt of court for violating his orders to turn around planes carrying deportees to El Salvador.
U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg said he the administration must try to “purge” itself of a contempt finding or he will launch hearings and potentially refer the matter for prosecution.
“The Court does not reach such conclusion lightly or hastily; indeed, it has given Defendants ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions. None of their responses has been satisfactory,” the judge wrote.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unexpectedly came across a violent incident against a police officer in the middle of Washington, D.C., Tuesday afternoon.
In an X post, Duffy explained that he was walking to the Navy Yard Metro Station when his staff told him a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) police officer had just been stabbed in the face. Duffy said he was about to talk about transit safety when he learned of the incident.

U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas approved a joint motion from a coalition of six business and banking groups, including the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the CFPB to scrap the rule, which was established last year.

In recent weeks, Republicans celebrated Shapley’s return as deputy chief of IRS criminal investigation. Now, Trump is poised to name Shapley to run the entire agency, after the resignation of the former commissioner who opposed a data sharing agreement with the Homeland Security Department.

Josh Sullivan, 45, was rescued by the “Hawks” — the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation — during a fatal shootout in the southeastern port city of Gqeberha on Tuesday, the South African Police Service said.
Three unidentified suspects were killed in the “high-stakes shootout. Sullivan was found “miraculously” unharmed in a safe house, officials said.

Two service members were killed and another is in serious condition following a vehicle accident earlier Tuesday in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM) said in a statement.
Shortly before 9 a.m. "Three service members deployed in support of Joint Task Force Southern Border were involved in a vehicle accident," NORTHCOM said.
Tuesday's accident are the first fatalities associated with the United States military's mission along the border with Mexico that have been disclosed.
More than 10,000 active duty service members have been authorized for the border mission.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, officials said.
