WASHINGTON — The U.S. military has conducted airstrikes against Islamic State operatives in Somalia, the first attacks in the African nation during President Donald Trump’s second term. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday that the strikes by U.S. Africa Command were directed by Trump and coordinated with Somalia’s government. An initial assessment by the Pentagon indicated that “multiple” operatives were killed. The Pentagon said it assessed that no civilians were harmed in the strikes. Trump, in a post on social media, said a senior IS planner and recruits were targeted in the operation.

President Donald Trump on Saturday followed through on his threat to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China in an effort to spur those countries to do more to curb illegal immigration to the U.S. and to stop the flow of illegal drugs. Trump announced that he was imposing 25 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, though the tariffs on Canadian energy imports will be limited to 10 percent, according to news reports. He also added an additional 10 percent tariff on imports from China. The tariffs are slated to go into effect on Tuesday,

I haven't seen Chuck Schumer so happy in months. There he was Wednesday, practically ready to burst into song while celebrating the Trump administration's withdrawal of a memo ordering a federal spending freeze. "Americans made their voices heard," Schumer crowed. "Donald Trump rescinded the OMB order." Schumer was too giddy to tell the full story. On Monday, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directed federal agencies to stop spending money, with exceptions for entitlements, defense, and direct support for individuals, until grants-in-aid programs were aligned with the president's agenda. The document's broad language resulted in confusion.

The Trump Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a massive overhaul of its practice allowing journalists to work from inside the building is beginning a program to remove four establishment media news outlets from their workspaces for one year to replace them with new media outlets, including Breitbart News. Acting Pentagon Press Secretary John Ullyot issued a memo on Friday to the Pentagon Press Association announcing that the NBC News, the New York Times, National Public Radio, and Politico must give up their physical workspaces in the Pentagon for one year to the New York Post, Breitbart News, and the Huffington Post.

When White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stepped up the podium in the press room for her first official briefing this past Tuesday, she surely expected to be bombarded with questions about things like the flurry of Executive Orders coming out of the Oval Office and tariffs possibly being levied on China. She likely also expected some inane or out-of-left-field questioning due to the fact that she had welcomed the corporate media to remain part of the White House press corps; she was much more gracious than her predecessor in that respect. Right on cue,

President Donald Trump has been on a tear, since his inauguration on Jan. 20, to fix things and make good on his promises. Democrats in response have been spinning, attacking, and lying about his actions. So, how are the American people reacting to it all? Democrats aren't going to like this very much, because it looks like the American people are getting the reality and rejecting the spin, in a new Emerson poll that's pretty amazing. First, it shows Trump has 49 percent approval, with a net approval across virtually all age groups.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la ... double-down? One might have thought that the Democratic National Committee would have learned a lesson from the 2024 election about the unpopularity of "woke." Joe Biden spent four years promoting DEI policies, and Kamala Harris ran on that as well as her own even more radical notions of 'diversity.' One such brag, a 2019 interview in which Harris took credit for supplying felons with free transsexual therapies while in prison, turned into the most effective message in the election. For Donald Trump.

We have become so used to government actors being malefactors, being lied to, and being pushed around that it becomes natural to suspect that when anything bad happens, somebody is behind it. The truth is, stuff happens. Mistakes are made, and acceptable risks sometimes lead to bad results. Usually, you can smell the stench of bulls**t if you sniff deep enough, and sometimes the BS is hidden enough that it takes a long time to come out. As often as not--more often than not--the term "conspiracy theory" is thrown out to label a perfectly plausible explanation for something as beyond the pale.

Meta Platforms (META) is in discussions about moving its incorporation from Delaware to Texas or other states, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The social media giant has talked to Texas officials about the potential changes, WSJ said, adding that the discussions predate President Donald Trump's new administration. The paperwork change would not relocate its corporate headquarters. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment but a company spokeperson told WSJ that there are no plans to move its corporate headquarters from California.

"I have no interest, no desire and will not, if confirmed, go backwards. There will be no politicization at the FBI. There will be no retributive actions taken," Patel said at the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Southern California wildfires, still burning, already rank among the most destructive in the state’s fire-laden history. They have destroyed entire neighborhoods in Los Angeles, including those in the beautiful and affluent Pacific Palisades community nestled along the Pacific Ocean between Malibu and Santa Monica. The scale of the destruction and the human suffering the fires have inflicted are massive. Firefighters are continuing to battle blazes across some 62 square miles, an area larger than all of San Francisco. The latest death toll has reached 29, which would put the fires third in the state’s history for fatalities, behind only the 1933 Griffith Park fire that killed 29

The Black Hawk helicopter that crashed into an American Airlines plane was alerted to the plane’s presence by air control twice, the first time at least two minutes before the deadly crash, according to a Washington Post report. Aviation experts reviewed Wednesday night’s radio transmissions, obtained by The Washington Post, and said that a soldier on the Black Hawk requested “visual separation” so that the helicopter crew could maintain a safe distance from the plane, which it could see. Both times, the request was approved by air traffic control. At 8:48 p.m., about 12 seconds after the second air traffic control tower alert, the helicopter and passenger plane collided.
