During the California leg of a year-long journey across America, I devoted a day to visiting two presidential libraries within a short distance of each other. I started that morning at the Richard Nixon Presidential Museum and Library and a few hours later proceeded to that of Ronald Reagan. Some months earlier I had also stopped at the Harry Truman Library and Museum in Missouri. Every president is actively encouraged to plan and construct an official repository of his documents from his time in office. The resulting library is more than the collection of the paperwork generated during his tenure, however.

A former “Chicago Fire” actor and his neighbors jumped into action and detained a “flamethrower”-wielding Mexican national near the Kenneth Fire threatening the area during a dramatic citizen’s arrest last week.
Brian J. White — who portrayed Capt. Dallas Patterson on the hit NBC show — was gearing up to flee his Woodland Hills home if the fire jumped from the neighboring West Hills neighborhood on Thursday when he heard shouting outside.

Independence Day, observed annually on July 4, is a national holiday that honors the ratification of the Declaration of Independence. This pivotal document marked the founding of the United States of America and its liberation from British tyranny and oppression.
In the mid-1990s, a song with the same title was awarded Country Music Song of the Year. Performed by Martina McBride, it celebrates a woman’s liberation from her abusive husband.
What are the commonalities? Oppression and abuse. Is anyone else sensing a strong stench of these in America, what used to be a shining city on a hill?
Gov. Kathy Hochul ducked any mention of a clamored-for ban on wearing masks in public during her State of the State Tuesday — a notable omission that drew condemnation from a potential election rival.

Democratic lawmakers on the panel took aim at Hegseth’s lack of experience leading an agency as large and complex as the Pentagon, claims related to his treatment of women and excessive drinking, and his past comments on the role of women in the military. Multiple Democrats also expressed concerns that an FBI background check on Hegseth, an Army veteran, left out crucial details about major allegations levied against him. The report was viewed by the panel’s top two members on Friday.

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom made the ill-conceived decision to appear in studio on Pod Save America, a podcast hosted by former Barack Obama staffers. It was a bizarre move to make while large parts of Los Angeles County are still burning. As I mentioned previously, he threw local officials under the bus while presenting himself as an innocent bystander amid a string of government failures. Apparently no one in charge cares more about containing the fires than making sure someone else gets blamed for it. But, even worse, the podcast hosts took the opportunity to solicit donations,

First, Biden is destined to be remembered as one of the least consequential presidents in American history. His tenure was a speed bump -- a thin slice of bologna that’s sandwiched between the two Trump terms. For a guy like Biden, who so clearly covets adulation, recognition, and public praise, that’s gotta sting.

It looks like Kamala Harris's classy streak is over.
For awhile there, we thought something had changed in her when she graciously certified the 2024 election in the Senate and put on a decent appearance at Jimmy Carter's funeral. It seemed like a politically smart way of distinguishing herself from bitter Joe Biden and preserving her political viability.
But now the old Kamala is back, classless as ever, refusing to give the incoming vice president, J.D. Vance and his young family, a courtesy tour of the Naval Observatory, which serves as the vice presidential residence. She even could have proudly shown him all the renovations she had done.
