House Passes Spending Bill, Better Than

It could have been much, much worse. The “continuing resolution” that Speaker Mike Johnson initially came up with, I take it as a result of negotiation with Senate Democrats and others, was a 1,500-page monstrosity that didn’t just continue existing spending until the next Congress can meet. Rather, it added many billions in new spending along with a plethora of other offensive provisions. That Frankenstein bill likely would have gone through, but for Elon Musk and Vivek Ramasawamy, who, even though their DOGE does not yet exist, exposed what was in the bill and mobilized conservative opposition against it.

The important thing here is better transparency. The 1600 page pork CR was torn apart and made available to people. I seems like the dinosaur media had little to do with it, they are too slow and there was a lot of goodies for dems in it so they were willing to let it tip toe by. But Elon and Trump were not. X blasted it out. Conservatives responded and Johnson felt he had been hit by a club. He put out a "clean" CR, probably knowing it would not pass, maybe getting the RINOs to vote against it to buy some time and look like he was doing the right thing. Then he got together with the dems and bargained for the minimum amount of pork that they would accept to get on board. But it was all under the watchful eye of Trump. He is a practical man and probably knew how this would play out. The most important thing to come out of this is the process and interactions. We are aware and watching and willing to take strong action to win. Johnson was embarrassed being caught trying to slip this through. If he continues along in this vein, he will soon be gone. Johnson was shown Trump's playbook and he better get on board. The dems tried their old games and mostly failed. They whined about the mean old Republicans and non governmental Elon forcing a nasty shutdown on the Country. The reaction was Ho-Hum. Dems just got a glimpse of their future, I wonder if they are smart enough to be scared? The dinosaur media was mostly AWOL. They can't frame things anymore and they can't keep up. Finally, it is another Trump and Musk big win. This is a new wind blowing through Washington and everything linked to it. As has been noted, Trump is not President yet. His people have not been approved. The new Congress has not been seated. Yet, things are doing Trump's way. One more month and then Full Speed Ahead.

one thing needed for context - i think the House had passed a while ago about 70% of the needed appropriatioons bills for new fiscal year - but Schumer brought up none of them, perhaps holding off to have a loaded gun for a Christmas omnibus. in the 119th we will have the Senate which gives us a better chance to control the process - and trim spending. hope springs eternal1

The Dems will be back in 2025 and they will be working to get that pork in the new spending bill, and Johnson will be there licking their butts again.

A migrant from Guatemala has been arrested on allegations he lit a sleeping woman on fire inside a Coney Island F train on Sunday morning. Police sources say a civilian identified the suspected killer as he rode on a train at 34th Street in Manhattan. The witness waved down the cops, who later picked the suspect up and detained him. He has not been charged with a crime yet, sources added. The suspect entered the country and was detained by border patrol agents in Arizona in June 2018 — and so far authorities have not found a past criminal record for him in New York City, law enforcement sources said.

President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his interest in a meeting regarding the war with Ukraine. “President Putin said that he wants to meet with me as soon as possible,” Trump said during his remarks at Turning Point’s America Fest convention. “So we have to wait for this, but we have to end that war. That war is horrible, horrible.” Trump, who is set to return to the White House in January, previously said on the campaign trail that if elected, he could end the war “in 24 hours.” The president-elect recently criticized the policy change by President Joe Biden that allowed

As President Biden's term comes to an end, he is reportedly considering commuting the sentences of most, if not all, of the 40 men on the federal government’s death row. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the move would frustrate President-elect Trump's plan to streamline executions as he takes office in January. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who oversees federal prisons, recommended that Biden commute all but a handful of egregious sentences, the sources said. The outlet reported that possible exceptions could include Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 2013 Boston Marathon bomber who killed three and wounded more than 250; Robert Bowers,

The Biden Administration quietly withdrew a proposed rule change to Title IX that would have clarified the eligibility of transgender athletes in school sports. The rule, which had sparked significant debate, was intended to ensure that schools could adopt policies on transgender participation while balancing fairness in women's sports. The Department of Education released a docket on Friday claiming that the initial intent of the Biden Administration’s proposal was to "propose a regulatory standard under Title IX that would govern a recipient’s adoption or application of sex-related criteria that would limit or deny a student’s eligibility to participate on a male or female athletic team consistent with their gender identity.”

America’s greatest presidents were sometimes treated like punching bags in office — insulted and vilified by opponents. President Biden has endured the same undeserved treatment. But I expect that, like other great presidents, history will judge him more accurately. Biden has been a historically transformative president. His landmark domestic accomplishments are comparable to Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. A 2023 survey of 154 political scientists and other presidential experts ranked Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and George Washington as America’s three greatest presidents, in that order. Biden ranked No. 14. Donald Trump, who will become president again

CBS News’ Lesley Stahl is having a bit of heartburn after the 2024 election. Donald Trump is coming back. The GOP retained control of Congress. Republicans scored a significant victory after successfully passing a spending bill on Friday to avert a looming government shutdown with just 12 hours to spare. The new 118-page bill, which overcame partisan tensions, reflects a strategic win for GOP lawmakers after 38 Republicans voted against the Trump-backed bill on Thursday. After negotiating, lawmakers agreed to trim the funding bill to just under 600 pages after the initial draft was more than 1,300 pages and included unnecessary spending, such as a pay increase for Congress members.

Among the 1,500 federal convicts granted clemency was Josephine Virginia Gray, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2002 for insurance fraud schemes connected to the murders of three men between 1974 and 1996. Gray was resentenced to the same amount of time again in 2006 following a series of appeals.

As drone sightings over New Jersey continue to raise questions, a new tool could bring answers about the source of these flying vehicles — if the government could get it off the ground. Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began requiring all unmanned aircraft systems to be equipped with Remote ID technology, which makes every equipped drone uniquely identifiable to authorities, like a license plate on a car. The FAA announced that it would provide a database that could be accessed by local law enforcement, but nearly one year later, local authorities still can't get into it themselves.

If anyone in the future cares enough to write an authentic history of the 2024 presidential campaign, they might begin by noting that American politics exists downstream of American culture, which is a deep and broad river. Like any river, American culture follows a particular path, which has been reconfigured at key moments by new technologies. In turn, these technologies, which redefine both space and time—canals and lakes, the postal system, the telegraph, railroads, radio and later television, the internet, and most recently the networking of billions of people in real time on social media platforms—set the rules by which stories are communicated, audiences are configured, and individuals define themselves.
