I have long thought that one of the hallmarks of an advanced economy is built-in resilience to shocks to the system.
As with so many things these days, that resilience has eroded to the point that, except in certain areas of the country like Florida, it hardly exists.
You have probably seen many of the same videos I have, in which North Carolina residents are begging for help and wondering where FEMA is. Aside from funding migrants, that is. It seems to be doing a fine job at that, exhausting the funds that should be going to help Helene's victims. Why is FEMA so awful?

Minneapolis — One state audit found that bonus checks intended for frontline workers during the pandemic were handed out to undeserving recipients. Another criticized a Minnesota state agency for failing to ensure there were no conflicts of interest in taxpayer-funded mental health and addiction programs. A third detailed lax oversight of a program to feed needy kids which federal prosecutors say resulted in the nation’s largest Covid-era fraud scheme. But when confronted with these and other troubling examples of waste, fraud and abuse, some state agencies working under the administration of Democratic Gov. Tim Walz repeatedly minimized or dismissed the allegations, the state’s nonpartisan auditor, Judy Randall, told CNN.

I knew I smelled a stink badger in the perfume aisle when the Mockingbird media myrmidons weren't descending on the areas Hurricane Helene ravaged and weren't writing much about the storm either, despite the brutal stories of death and survival on X.
Once upon a time, Anderson Cooper was eager to beclown himself for storm ratings. Those days are gone.
I just went to CNN, and most stories were dedicated to brainwashing CNN's dwindling audience that Trump is a ghastly hobgoblin. Their most prominent story on the storm was "fact-checking" Trump's statement that the Biden-Harris administration was getting "universally negative" reviews on their hurricane response efforts, like this one:

Vice President Kamala Harris, already under fire for her indifference to the devastation of Hurricane Helene and the federal government's sluggish response, has now raised further eyebrows by recording an episode of the explicit “Call Her Daddy” podcast this week.
At a time when Americans are grappling with the aftermath of a catastrophic storm as well as increased tensions in the Middle East, Kamala's priorities are completely out of whack. Although she has made some appearances on supportive media platforms, she has largely shied away from traditional press engagements and has done zero press conferences.

At least three people, including two teenagers, have been killed in Chicago over the last two weeks in shootings that weren’t immediately reported by residents calling 911 and that occurred in neighborhoods previously covered by the city’s now-decommissioned ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system.
The body of 19-year-old Sierra Evans was discovered Saturday morning on Chicago’s Southeast Side hours after she was shot, according to media reports. On Tuesday, police found Thaddeus Scott, 53, dead with gunshots to his chest and back on a West Side street.
Most recently, police found a 14-year-old boy fatally shot late Tuesday on a West Side sidewalk.

President Joe Biden warned of the possibility that former president Donald Trump and his followers will not handle the 2024 presidential election peacefully.
Biden, appearing Friday at the White House press briefing for the first time, expressed concerns about how Trump will respond to the election, given his false claims surrounding the 2020 contest.
“I’m confident [the election] will be free and fair,” Biden said. “I don’t know whether it will be peaceful. The things that Trump has said and the things that he said last time out, when he didn’t like the outcome of the election, were very dangerous.”
Biden went on to criticize Trump’s running mate, Senator J. D. Vance

The U.S. economy added far more jobs than expected in September, pointing to a vital employment picture as the unemployment rate edged lower, the Labor Department reported Friday.
Nonfarm payrolls surged by 254,000 for the month, up from a revised 159,000 in August and better than the 150,000 Dow Jones consensus forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point. With upward revisions from previous months, the report eases concerns about the state of the labor market and likely locks in the Federal Reserve to a more gradual pace of interest rate reductions.

Texas Highway Patrol troopers interdicted a large group of migrants shortly after they waded across the shallow Rio Grande north of Eagle Pass on Monday. The large group was one of two that the agency interdicted that day. According to a spokesperson for the Texas Highway Patrol, 27 migrants within the group were “Special Interest Aliens,” citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, and India.
A second group of 41 migrants was arrested earlier in the day, bringing the total number of migrants apprehended by the Texas Army National Guard soldiers and the Texas troopers in the Eagle Pass area on Monday to 271.

Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill and Mia McCarthy wrote an incredibly damaging article on Thursday about Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) performance in Tuesday night’s debate.
The story suggests Democrats are panicking following Walz’a debate performance against Senator J.D Vance (R-OH), who received widespread praise amongst media elites for his debate performance.
Obtaining on and off the record statements from Democrats, Hill and McCarthy did everything but torpedo Walz’s political future:
Tim Walz was supposed to cut through the political nonsense to speak plainly to Americans about out-of-touch Republicans. But instead, some Democrats were alarmed by his performance at Tuesday’s debate and said he failed to capitalize on his opponents’ weaknesses.

The Biden administration’s sweeping student loan forgiveness plan was temporarily blocked again Thursday by a Missouri judge, just one day after a federal judge in Georgia said he would let a restraining order against the relief expire.
St-Louis-based U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, issued the latest preliminary injunction against Biden’s relief plan.
As a result of the order, the U.S. Department of Education is again barred from forgiving people’s student loans until Schelp has a chance to rule on the case.
The latest order capped 24 hours during which federal student loan holders were subjected to judicial whiplash

What a week it's been for Trump, Vance, and We the People. Commies... not so much.
The Trafalgar Group released a poll on Wednesday showing Trump has increased his lead in the vital swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin.
The recent poll shows Trump beating Harris by 2.2 points in Michigan, with Trump scoring 47.5% of the votes to Harris's 45.3%. On August 31, the Trafalgar Group had Trump beating Harris 47% to 46.6%, a lead of only 0.4%.
Trump is winning in Wisconsin as well, topping the Kackler by 47.1% to 46%. The poll had Trump at 47.3% to Harris's 46.2%.

A defensive President Biden on Thursday disputed criticism that his administration was caught off-guard by Hurricane Helene, insisting that he had a plan in place even before the deadly storm made landfall.
“Days before the storm hit, I pre-positioned extensive resources on the ground throughout the Southeast, extensively — first responders, search and rescue teams, food, water, ambulances — before Helene made landfall,” Mr. Biden said after touring the damage in Ray City, Georgia.
He said he approved disaster relief funding before the storm hit, unlocking federal aid for the states impacted by the storm, which includes Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
