One persistent theme coming from the Democrats is that Trump, if elected a second time, would become a dictator and end democracy. For eight years, critics have called Trump an autocrat and likened him to the despised autocrats of the twentieth century, from Mussolini to Hitler. This rhetorical extremism is odd: Reagan and Bush were despised by Democrats, but they were not generally portrayed as threats to democracy. Nor have these accusations gone away; if anything, they are more intense now than in 2015 when they first surfaced.
It is one thing to say that Trump will do this, and will do that,

Rep. Stacey Plaskett, a Democrat who represents the at-large congressional district of the Virgin Islands, went on an unhinged rant at a House hearing Wednesday, held by the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, where she called Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) her "white male counterpart," Elon Musk "a far-right conspiracy theorist," and former President Donald Trump "would-be Führer."
Plaskett, a ranking member of the select subcommittee, said the purpose of the investigative body is to "test out conspiracy theories, prop up those stories that the far-right wishes to push into the American psyche, and to lay the groundwork for a dictatorial government led by Donald Trump."

As we've been covering, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Pennsylvania this week on the taxpayer's dime where he hobnobbed with Democratic politicians in the commonwealth and even criticized the Trump-Vance ticket. According to Zelensky, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) "is too radical." On Wednesday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Assistant to the President and White House Counsel Edward Siskel seeking documents about any government resources used for the visit.
Concerns about the visit go beyond this week, though.

A U.S. Senate committee’s report on Secret Service failures around the first Trump assassination attempt reveals that the Secret Service found out about Thomas Crooks’ suspicious behavior almost half an hour before he shot the president and killed another man.
The injuries of Donald Trump and multiple rally attendees and the death of Corey Comperatore could all have been prevented had the Secret Service taken the report of a “suspicious person with a rangefinder around the AGR building approximately 27 minutes before the shooting” seriously, the bipartisan report demonstrates. The incompetence, whether deliberate or accidental, of the Secret Service cost a life and changed American politics.

The USNS Abraham Lincoln strike group, currently in the Middle East, is without any means of refueling after the oil tanker USNS Big Horn ran aground off the coast of Oman. The Big Horn is the only tanker in the entire Middle East, and the Navy is currently scrambling to come up with a replacement.
Should I mention that our most important ally in the Middle East might be at war with Iran in a few hours? [Tweet, video]

The Haitian Bridge Alliance, a small non-profit Haitian immigrant rights group in Springfield, Ohio, has filed "citizen criminal charges" against Donald Trump and JD Vance.
The national media is taking this extremely silly form of lawfare seriously.
What "crimes" have Trump and Vance committed? The Republican presidential campaign ticket is "charged with disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, aggravated menacing and complicity."
Trump and Vance did all that? I never knew.
Fifteen thousand newcomers have descended on a small city, overwhelming the medical and educational resources of Springfield. It's a bitter irony to accuse Trump and Vance of what the Haitian immigrants are actually doing.

Michael Cohen, a former personal attorney for Donald Trump, said Monday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that if former President Donald Trump wins the election, he will leave the country under a different name.
Host Nicolle Wallace said, “What do you think happens to you if he wins?”
Cohen said, “I’m out of here. I’m already working on a foreign passport with a completely different name. I don’t know how it is going to work as far as dealing with my wife and my children. I certainly don’t want them moving to where I’m looking to go.”
He added, “I don’t think you or the president of the MSNBC, General Milley, Liz Cheney are safe.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has announced he will not be endorsing Kamala Harris over her pledge to gut the Senate filibuster.
In an interview with CNN, Manchin said Harris’s plan to remove the filibuster to legislate in favor of abortion rights would undermine democracy in America.
“Shame on her,” Manchin said. “She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together. If she gets rid of that, then this would be the House on steroids.”
“That ain’t going to happen,” he added on the mention of his endorsing Harris for president. “I think that basically can destroy our country,

One of the most interesting reactions to the first assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
He said things that were clearly off the liberal reservation, including saying Trump standing up and pumping his fist in the air after getting shot in the face was "badass." [Tweet, video]
I thought that showed an interesting evolution, although I also wondered if he was just covering his butt, given that Trump may very well be coming into office and maybe he wanted to get on his good side.

We haven't heard a whole lot from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) since her calculated plan to force President Joe Biden out of the presidential race bore fruit in late July with Biden ceding the nomination to his vice president, Kamala Harris.
But when we have, it's been the usual spew of fruit cakery, as we saw during her late August appearance on Bill Maher's program, where Pelosi had the nerve to invoke Ronald Reagan's legacy while trying to defend California's dangerous open borders priorities and policies.
Then there was the "interview" she did with late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert,

Sometimes even the leftist cable news channel CNN has to admit when a Democrat is so disingenuous that they try to sell themselves as a type of person despite years of history of showing otherwise. Such is the case now, as Kamala Harris keeps trying to convince voters of a laughable narrative, namely that she's tough on the border. She's run ludicrous ads and made claims about her deep commitment to securing the southern boundary, and now she's planning on going down there Friday. To do what, exactly?
RedState's Nick Arama points out that the "Border Czar" has had plenty of opportunities in the past to address the problem:

Last Friday, as we covered at the time, the House unanimously passed a bill from Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Ritchie Torres (D-NY) to offer nominees for president and vice president the same U.S. Secret service protection as the sitting president and vice president. The Senate did so on Tuesday by unanimous consent in a move offered by Sens. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Tim Scott (R-SC).
Fox News' Chad Pergram noted the bill goes to President Joe Biden's desk to sign. [Tweet]
