Washington, D.C. – The acting head of the Secret Service admitted at a congressional hearing Tuesday that he “cannot defend” the security failures that allowed would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks to carry out the shooting at the former president’s rally earlier this month.
Acting Secret Service director Ronald Rowe candidly discussed with Senate lawmakers the agency’s failures at the Trump rally and the various reforms he will implement to ensure nothing like it happens again, a contrast to former director Kimberly Cheatle’s refusal to answer basic questions when she testified before the House Oversight Committee last week. She has since resigned.

Say, whose honeymoon is this, anyway? Supposedly, Kamala Harris has "totally upended" the race with The Anointment and the media's rush to proclaim the advent of "Kamalot." Also, Donald Trump only has a ceiling in the mid-40s and can't possibly win an outright popular-vote majority, especially with such a Historic Candidate™ as an opponent.
Or so analysts thought. According to a new Harvard-Harris CAPS poll, Donald Trump leads Kamala Harris 52/48 with leaners, and 48/45 without. Harris has improved Joe Biden's numbers on the latter, but not the former: Even the unsure voters are breaking toward Trump, at least somewhat. The more worrisome data for Democrats are in the charts

The air war has begun.
For those of us who are terminally online (not me!), it may seem that the presidential campaign has been endless. But the majority of people have barely begun to tune in. With Kamala Harris suddenly the Democrat candidate, the Trump campaign has had to rework their strategy completely.
The results are here and not particularly surprising. Trump is going after Kamala as dangerously liberal, especially on the border. And they are making their pitch in a significant ad buy on TV in the big swing states.

Beirut — Israel says it has launched a strike in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting a Hezbollah commander that it blamed for a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said “Hezbollah crossed the red line” in a social media post minutes after the Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike on Tuesday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had “carried out a targeted strike in Beirut, on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians.”
It did not provide details about how the strike was carried out.

With Kamala Harris now the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, the polls are coming hard and fast. On Tuesday morning, another survey was released showing that she had narrowed the gap compared to Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race.
The headline was clear: Harris has "reset" the race to the numbers we were seeing before the disastrous debate that ended the current president's bid for re-election. According to the poll, Trump leads Harris by three points, clocking in at 48 to 45 percent. When leaners are included, the former president's lead grows to four points, with the spread being 52 to 48 percent.

Oh noes! Heaven forfend that a political candidate answer for their positions from four whole years ago!
Side note: Has anyone at the New York Times covered a political campaign before? Because usually the idea is to debate policy positions taken publicly as an indicator of what might take place when a candidate wins. Well, usually, but we'll get to the NYT's modus operandi in a moment.
Yesterday afternoon, the Paper of Record took great offense at Republicans who want to highlight Kamala Harris' record in the upcoming months. That's called "weaponization" rather than "accountability" when Republicans do it, apparently:

A report has found that the United States military is “not prepared” to fight in a major war, as “major powers” — such as Russia and China — have become “top threats” to the U.S., with China “outpacing” the U.S.
The report, which the Commission on the National Defense Strategy released in July, reveals that while the U.S. is currently facing some of “the most serious and most challenging” threats since 1945, several problems are preventing the U.S. military from being able to address threats from China or Russia.
Among the problems preventing the U.S. military from addressing threats from China and Russia is reportedly the Department of Defense’s

Remember how many primary delegates Kamala Harris won in the 2020 Democrat primaries? Oh, yes - none. She dropped out before a single primary vote was cast, in no small part because she was the recipient of a devastating attack by then-Democratic candidate Tulsi Gabbard (HI), who abandoned her laid-back aloha composure to tear Harris apart over her record as attorney general of California. I was recently able to uncover some previously unknown video coverage of Tulsi's takedown of Kamala Harris: Now, by dint of befuddled old Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris has been anointed as the candidate. And, we may very well ask,

Two children are dead, and nine others were critically injured after a horrific mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in Lancashire in Northwest England.
Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told reporters that police were called to the crime scene at 11:47 local time. Officers were "shocked" at the carnage they found in the wake of what Kennedy called a "ferocious attack." "It is with great sadness that today I am here to advise that two young children have died as a result of injuries sustained in a knife attack this morning," Kennedy said.

SEATTLE - Elon Musk has been highly critical of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following his government's decision to claim victory in the elections despite lack of transparent data. On Monday, Maduro picked up the glove and responded to Musk's claims by labelling him as as an "archenemy to the peace of Venezuela." "Who controls virtual reality? Our new archenemy Elon Musk, who is desperate to come to Venezuela with his rockets and an army to invade Venezuela," Maduro said in an event that ratified Maduro as Venezuela's President after the July 28 elections. He added that Musk is trying to use his money and his satellites to control the world.

LONDON -- A High Court judge on Monday upheld the British government's emergency ban on puberty blockers, saying a study that found “very substantial risks and very narrow benefits” of the treatment supported the restriction as potentially being harmful.
Justice Beverley Lang said a review commissioned by England's National Health Service concluded that gender care is an area of “remarkably weak evidence” and young people have been caught up in a “stormy social discourse.”
The group TransActual and a youth who cannot be named under a court order sought to challenge the decision of former Health secretary Victoria Atkins to ban prescribing hormones

Republicans took to social media to flip claims that Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) “is weird” back on Democrats.
Several people and accounts such as Fox News contributor Sara Carter, Donald Trump Jr., Libs of TikTok, End Wokeness, and JD Vance posted photos of Sam Brinton, a former Department of Energy official who has been accused of stealing women’s luggage, President Joe Biden appearing to sniff a child’s head, and Democrats wearing odd outfits.
The posts were accompanied by similarly worded text saying, “JD Vance is weird.”
