The apparent crash of a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and other officials is likely to reverberate across the Middle East.
That’s because Iran has spent decades supporting armed groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Palestinian territories that allow it to project power and potentially deter attacks from the United States or Israel, the sworn enemies of its 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Tensions have never been higher than they were last month,

Iran already tried to lob thousands of rockets Israel's way last month with no material consequences of note thanks to Israel's Iron Dome and our help. This 'accident' has all the marks of Israel's IDF or Mossad as payback and sending the message 'Don't screw with us. None of you are safe - ANYWHERE'.

We'll know if the SOB is dead when Biden orders flags flown at half-staff.

Condolences go out to the parents of the beautiful helicopter, Mr. and Mrs. Chinook Sikorski, as well as to the extended Sikorski family, in the untimely loss of their precious loved one.

Helos break, and often the pilot is left with no chance to get any version of a safe landing. I tend to doubt that Israel had anything to do with this, probably an ancient Soviet helo with questionable maintenance history.

Bigger picture - TWO heads of state possibly lost their lives this week. So far it appears the Slovakia PM is surviving, but he could have been killed. This is too much to be coincidence IMHO.

More investigation finds that the helo is a civil version of the old Huey used in Vietnam. Since we have been cutting off parts supplies for any and all aircraft to Iran for decades, you can bet that the parts needed to maintain this helo were hard to get, and came through questionable (to say the least) channels.
Maintaining and old helo with iffy parts purchased from smugglers......sounds incredibly likely to cause an unreliable helo.
Many, many parts of helos require periodic replacement. Part A must be replaced every 450 flight hours, regardless of how it looks, feels or measures in any test. MANDATORY. Hundreds of parts are like that in the rotor head and transmission system. With highly questionable parts, meaning NONE from a Bell helo dealer, I'll bet that parts were regularly "inspected and found OK" when the book says "must be replaced".
:Let's hope that they were all wiped out. It would make the world a slightly better place.

Looks like a 70's era Bell 212, likely "confiscated" from a US or other foreign contracting company during the revolution.Iran also has/had a BUNCH of the military version, called Huey's.
In the picture I saw, it does not have the standard/telltale fin over the cockpit that IFR equipped 212's of that era all have, sooo...no instrument flying, visual only...though they were flying in a group of three in very limited visibility.
As Gawd wanted.

The Iranians keep these old "Shah era" American made helicopters going with duct tape and spit. When they do get parts, they're usually from aircraft parts dealers that deal in "uncertified used" parts.
Helicopters have MANY mechanical "single-point-failures," meaning there is no "back-up system," and which require frequent parts replacements with NEW OEM parts. The alternative is often death. With that in mind, this is the reason helicopters are huge financial "black-holes" in maintenance costs alone, but they're also fuel hogs, and that's not cheap either. That's why "special purpose operators" might opt to "truck" their helicopter to the location it's needed, rather than flying it there.
My guess is on a Mossad operation. This is REALLY gonna tick off Barack and ValJar.

Am reminded of a conversation between Jeff Dunham and Achmed the Dead Terrorist.
Jeff: "Say hello to the audience, Achmed."
Achmed: "Are those my virgins? There are a lot of ugly guys out there."
Jeff: "Who said the virgins were women?"

While it would be gratifying to think that Mossad was behind this, the chances that an old helicopter flying in the fog in the mountains is the likely cause. It was supposedly flying with two other 'copters and they still can't find the crash site. Chances are that the other two did not even know that the crash occurred until later. It looked like rescue vehicles on the ground had difficulty navigating through the fog.
