I had been told that Joe Biden, the president of the United States, would be delivering the 2024 State of the Union Address on Thursday, March 7. As it happened, he didn’t. Instead, he indulged in a surreal, medically enhanced species of primal scream therapy. This was laced with liberal dollops of what Freudians call “projection,” accusing his political opponents of stifling democracy when everyone outside the orbit of the state propaganda machine knows that the surveillance apparatus over which Biden presides — ex officio, at least — is a self-perpetuating machine for extinguishing democracy and its prime nutrient, frank commitment to the truth.

A great deal hinged on Joe Biden's performance during Thursday evening's State of the Union address. The White House knew more than anything that Biden had to dispel concerns regarding his age and cognitive decline. Naturally, the mainstream media did its part to help in shore up this narrative affirming Biden's presidential competence, and wound up choosing the same entry from the thesaurus to characterize his delivery: "fiery."
I'm sure it was just a coincidence.
But, it didn't work for those of us who saw and heard Biden's loud and angry delivery, which was punctuated by constant slurring and slip ups.
This week was the ridiculous annual spectacle where the president is supposed to tell us the state of our so-called union, as if we don’t already know. That’s a particularly appropriate topic for the current president who was elected on the promise that he would be a “uniter, not divider” who would bring normalcy and decency back to the office.
A few seconds into it, he was implying that the people who currently disfavor his re-election, a cohort comprising over half the country – and especially his “predecessor” whose name must not be spoken – were in league with Vladimir Putin.
“Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes,” noted G.K. Chesterton a century ago. This is brought to mind by the modern obsession with “new ideas,” typified by Joe Biden’s implicit touting of them during his State of the Union address.
The issue “isn't how old we are; it’s how old our ideas are,” he said Thursday evening. He’s right, too.
And, usually, the “older” the ideas, the better.
There’s an irony to Biden’s appeal: He doesn’t want to be dismissed out of hand over age.
But he does want ideas dismissed out of hand over age.

The Essex County school district’s four schools will dismiss at noon or 12:45 p.m., hours before the eclipse, so students are not tempted to look directly at the sun without protective eyewear during their usual dismissal time, the superintendent said.
