Ukraine reportedly shot down two of Russia’s top-tier aircraft over the Azov Sea. One of the planes, a Beriev A-50 is similar to an American AWACS, with a large radar dish mounted above the fuselage of the plane. The price tag of this plane is reportedly over $300 million dollars and Russia may have as few as 9 or 10 of these planes in service. Ukrainian media reported an A-50 early warning and control aircraft was shot down on Sunday evening shortly after take-off over the Sea of Azov in the Kyrylivka area of Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine… It’s reported cost per aircraft is a massive $330m. These AEW&C aircraft are vital

Not buying it. More likely that the Russian planes fell out of the sky due to poor/nonexistent maintenance practices. There is also the well known tendencies of Russians to imbibe certain mind altering liquids while performing the daily duties of living. But you never know,Joe's buddies may just have been lucky/sober...

The "A" in the A-50 designation means Antonov. I've been to the Antonov factory.....in Ukraine. Russia can't replace these aircraft, certainly not the basic airframes and probably not the equipment, which is often a lot of western made stuff, or at least many components from the west, no longer available to Russia.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing back on the immigration deal being negotiated between Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Senate. That comes via a new report that includes several quotes from GOP senators urging Johnson to accept what they send over. Speaker Mike Johnson is publicly and privately panning the Senate’s ongoing border and immigration negotiations. Senate Republicans are reminding him that it's the best deal he'll ever get. An Iranian strike on targets inside Pakistan have killed two children and wounded three other people, the Pakistani government has said. Pakistan's foreign ministry issued a statement confirming Tuesday's attack, which was first announced by Iranian media reports that were later withdrawn. It called the attack an 'unprovoked violation' of the country's airspace, with the strikes reportedly targeting bases of Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl. The attack further raises tensions in a Middle East already roiled by Israel's war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also threatens relations between Iran and Pakistan, which have long eyed each other with suspicion while maintaining diplomatic relations.

The oil company Shell plans to suspend tanker shipments through the Red Sea as repeated Houthi attacks on cargo ships have destabilized the vital transit route. The Iranian-backed Houthi militia began striking shipping containers following the Hamas invasion of Israel in early October as a means of putting pressure on the international coalition supporting the Jewish State in its ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Shell’s move, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, brings the gas giant in line with other major suppliers, including British Petroleum (BP) and Qatar Energy, which both recently opted to avoid the region altogether. WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is expected to soon announce plans to redesignate Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen as specially designated global terrorists, according to two people familiar with the White House decision and a U.S. official. The move comes as the Houthis have launched dozens of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The group says it has attacked the ships in response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. The three people familiar with the decision were not authorized to comment and requested anonymity to discuss the matter ahead of the expected formal announcement. The administration is expected

On the eve of the Iowa Republican caucus, the New York Times editorial board begged Republicans to abandon 2024 frontrunner former President Donald Trump in a piece Monday morning. The board said: Iowa Republicans who will gather on Monday to cast the first votes of the 2024 presidential campaign season, and voters in New Hampshire and the states that will follow, have one essential responsibility: to nominate a candidate who is fit to serve as president, one who will ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’
