An Illinois appeals court upheld actor Jussie Smollett’s conviction for staging a hate crime in a Friday ruling.
The 2-1 ruling means Smollett is likely headed to jail to serve out his 150-day sentence, though his legal team vowed to appeal the ruling to the state supreme court.
“We wish to highlight that the decision was divided, with Justice [Freddrenna] Lyle offering a detailed analysis in favor of Smollett,” Smollett’s representative Holly Baird told Fox News.”We are preparing to escalate this matter to the Supreme Court, armed with a substantial body of evidence.”

Speakers at COP28 on Friday include Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, a leading oil producer, and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, where sprawling cities suffer from worsening air pollution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was among the first to speak.
Reiterating his message that unprecedented global heating is causing human suffering, he called on leaders to take urgent action.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — As world leaders gathered for the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, the collapse of a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war Friday plunged the conflict back into open combat and cast a long shadow over the talks.
Israel’s top diplomat for the Middle East huddled with leaders at the summit as his colleagues went through a book of posters of those held hostage by the militant group Hamas, placing yellow “released” stickers by some while looking at others still held. Meanwhile, just a street away at the Palestinian territories’ first-ever pavilion, an official gave a horrified look when Associated Press journalists gave her the news that

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Friday that Israel had struck over 200 terror targets in both northern and southern Gaza after Hamas violated a seven-day truce just over an hour before it was set to expire. In a statement, the IDF said:
Following Hamas’ violation of the operational pause, over the last few hours, ground, air and naval forces struck terror targets in the north and south of the Gaza Strip, including in Khan Yunis and Rafah.
The IDF struck areas booby-trapped with explosives, terror tunnel shafts, launch posts, and operational command centers designated by Hamas for use in the renewed fighting.

The bottom line is this: the modern home of antisemitism is the Democrat Party.
That’s not to say that being a Democrat makes you an antisemite. Hardly. 7 in 10 Jews are Democrats, and many non-Jewish Democrats are anything but antisemites.
But let’s face facts: the home of antisemites in America is the Democrat Party. While 80% of Republicans and nearly 70% of Independents support Israel, only 45% of Democrats do. It’s pretty hard to ignore these dramatic differences.
Most of the Republicans I see who are critical of supporting Israel do so because they lean toward isolationism, disdaining support for Ukraine as well as Israel. Most of the Democrats

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) correctly noted in his 90-minute rout of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) that Newsom is a liberal bully. The more accurate term would be “crybully,” and Newsom is the biggest crybully in the country.
Newsom’s attempt at shaming DeSantis that backfired was about DeSantis threatening to fine the Special Olympics. Newsom’s “how dare you” routine was designed to make DeSantis look like the bad guy, but he got everything backward. As DeSantis noted, he was threatening to fine the organization of the Special Olympics because it was going to ban athletes who did not receive a COVID-19 vaccine

Florida appears poised to hold no presidential primary election for Democrats this cycle after the state party submitted only President Joe Biden’s name as a candidate up for the nomination.
The move to leave Rep. Dean Phillips off the primary ballot left the Minnesota Democrat enraged on Thursday. In a statement first provided to POLITICO, Phillips, who has launched a longshot primary bid against Biden, accused Florida Democratic Party officials of rigging the primary. He threatened a lawsuit and a convention fight if he didn’t win ballot access in the state.

A federal appeals court has ruled Friday that former President Donald Trump is not immune to facing civil lawsuits relating to the events on Jan. 6, 2021.
Sri Srinivasan, the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, wrote in a filing that Capitol Police officers and members of Congress who were at the U.S. Capitol that day have filed cases seeking civil damages "for harms they allege they suffered arising from the riot," with the defendant in the lawsuits being named as Trump.
Srinivasan said Trump has moved in the district court to dismiss the claims against him, "including on grounds

Representative George Santos became the sixth congressman in U.S. history to be expelled from the House of Representatives after many of his GOP colleagues joined a united Democratic caucus on Friday in booting him from the lower chamber. The final whip count was 311 in favor and 114 against, with two members voting “present.”
The indicted congressman’s ouster from the lower chamber will usher in an ultra-competitive special election in his Long Island and Queens district that the Cook Political Report has already rated a “tossup.” Once Democratic governor Kathy Hochul sets a date for a special election — likely early next year — local party officials

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor died Friday morning in Phoenix, Arizona, the Supreme Court announced. She was 93.
O'Connor died of complications related to advanced dementia, probably Alzheimer's, and a respiratory illness, the Supreme Court said in a statement.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., said of Justice O’Connor: "A daughter of the American Southwest, Sandra Day O’Connor blazed an historic trail as our Nation’s first female Justice. She met that challenge with undaunted determination, indisputable ability, and engaging candor. We at the Supreme Court mourn the loss of a beloved colleague, a fiercely independent defender of the rule of law, and an eloquent advocate for civics education.

I'll admit to being pleasantly surprised by the outcome of Thursday night's debate between Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom. When you hear something enough, it's easy to start believing it, and I can't count how many times I've heard "DeSantis isn't a good debater" leave the lips of a Republican. What that was based on, I'll never quite know, but the myth has been completely dispelled.
Yes, DeSantis managed to match Newsom's stage presence, standing up to his smarmy, slick demeanor, but his takedown of the California governor was about something more. It was about knowing the issues, but also throwing caution to the wind in arguing them

The oldest Israeli hostage taken by Hamas terrorists during their barbaric October 7 attack on Israel has died in captivity. He was 85.
Aryeh Zalmanovich was one of the founders of Kibbutz Nir Oz.
The small Israeli farming community confirmed his death by releasing a statement:
With great sadness Kibbutz Nir Oz announces the murder of Aria (Zalman) Zalmanowicz. Zalman was 85 years old, and was a founder of Kibbutz Nir Oz.
Zalman was a father of two and grandfather of five grandchildren. He was a man of the land, dedicated to agriculture his entire life.
He was an avid reader, with a wide knowledge of history and the country.
May his memory be a blessing.
