Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.), the embattled senior senator from the Mountain State, says he’s “thinking seriously” about leaving the Democratic Party as he mulls his political future. Mr. Manchin, the former governor of West Virginia, has occupied his seat in the Senate since 2010, when he was elected to fill the vacancy left by the death of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.). Even as his state shifted further and further into the arms of the Republican Party, Mr. Manchin held onto his seat by presenting himself as a “conservative Democrat” and a moderate voice among his party as it moved further to the left.

He will caucus with the Democrat Party, so I can't see a difference.

Seriously? He's had decades to consider which way to go. It's BS. He wants to keep his stinkin' job.

To late, you've already caused too much damage. You could have voted against them and changed your party from within. See what you are?

I’ll give Joe the benefit of the doubt here. He did give us a vote we needed at times then backslid and voted with the Dems. I don’t think he’s honest like Zell Miller who walked away from the party and he was a life long member. He said, “I’ve had enough.. The Democrat Party has left me, I didn’t leave them.”

A few months he was “exploring” a run for President so I think joe just likes to see his name in the paper.

Re-election time… same song and dance every six years with this guy and the voters of West Virginia fall for it!

Yes, it’s a bunch of conjecture to get in the news and get attention. Whenever Democrats make a splash about leaving their party, if they actually do it, they do exactly as #1 said!!

Is he looking to have as many parks, buildings, highways and bridges named after him just like Robert C Byrd?

Manchin is a dead man walking. If he stays a Democrat, he will be primaried out. If he switches to Republican, he will be primaried out. If he switches to an Independent, he will come in third in a three-way race. His only consideration at this point is what will allow him to milk the most in campaign contributions from rubes.

I can’t in good conscience defend Manchin very strongly, but I can have some empathy. The democrat party he signed up for no longer exists. About 99.99% of the current party’s agenda is not what his constituents want. So, he is out in the cold. What should he do? Joining the Republican Party is probably unlikely as he’s not a conservative. I really think the honorable thing to do is not seek re-election.

His political career is on life support and he is desperately looking for a life preserver.
His state likely won't send him back to the Senate.
He has no chance of becoming a third party President.
The Dems hate him and the Repubs don't trust him.
Your time at the public trough is over Joe.
You blew it.

Unless he joins the Republicans, this is just a ploy to get reelected. He thinks he might be able to snag enough Republican votes to win in a three way contest.

He’s such a sleazy weasel. I’ve seen him talk the talk and then scurry back to the dems so many times I wouldn’t stop nd help him if he was stranded on the side of the road.

These machinations hardly matter at this point. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, a Republican, is poised to positively thump Manchin in the 2024 senate race. The man is toast, and he knows it. Manchin's negatives are sky high and West Virginians don't trust him because of his votes supporting Biden. If he turned Independent, he'd caucus with the Rats anyway, and neither side would trust a traitor. Politically, Manchin has made himself irrelevant.

I don't believe him. My guess is he's hoping he can get more pork for W. Va by threatening to leave the dems.
