In 2014, I published an essay listing ten reasons I am no longer a leftist. Something happened last Monday that hurt my feelings a lot and reminded me of another reason: I’m poor. This is counterintuitive. The Left depicts itself as the champion of the poor; the Left depicts right-wingers as hating the poor. Backstage, behind all the speechifying about “compassion,” a very specific left-wing attitude to the poor is abhorrent to me. I encountered that attitude last Monday. I felt disgust, rage, and sorrow.
(Snip)People who are not poor say who the poor are, why we are poor, and what should be done about us. They script us.

I love this writer. Love and respect and enjoyment of everybody, and a true appreciation of the interesting lives of real people. The New Yorker used to write about that. No more, because the poor and weak tend to identify with babies and the old and sick and people who get beat up. Can't give them a voice! Now Trump does that, while Biden giggles and smirks and betrays the poor and uses this deep convincing voice to lie like hell. All she says sounds true and beautiful to me.

I left when the dems tried to stop Clarence Thomas from getting on the Supreme Court. Ted Kennedy, Biden and other Dems were totally disrespectful towards Thomas. I decided that I didn’t want anything to do with these people. They prove I was right all the time.

This is a very long read but well worth your time. The very people the dims claim to support are the very people who remain forgotten in Amerikan culture.

One helluva read.
FTA: “I suspect that Ted, and other leftists, are incapable of recognizing human pain that serves no leftist narrative. The actual pain of the person right in front of him, a person who, because she is white, cannot help the revolution along, is utterly invisible to Ted.”
FTA: “Rather than cultivating an attitude of gratitude and forgiveness, leftists want me to dwell on my misfortunes and blame politically designated enemies.”

fta: I’ll say the quiet part out loud. They give to junkies, and not to the Salvation Army or the churches, because they endorse and underwrite the transgressive, deviant, junkie life. They don’t want to underwrite the simple human decency the Salvation Army and the churches represent. At the same time, they want the junkies to stay among us, the poor. They want the poor kids you and I watched walk to school, the kids in this building, not their kids, to pick their way around discarded needles. They want Carmen, my neighbor, not their mother, to find her car windows smashed so that some junkie could steal the spare change she keeps in the console to pay parkway tolls. They want my blind neighbor to step in human feces as he walks to his ministry work; they sure don’t want that for themselves. Leftists love junkies – junkies that torment the working poor.
---
Yes, yes they want those things because "the poor" are props in election years. "The poor" are a monolith to bash conservatives over the head anytime any of us suggests local charity, especially that distributed by faith communities, is BETTER charity, actual helpful charity. We know putting charitable giving (of which yes, tax payer entitlement dollars are just that) back into the hands of the communities where the needy and deserving are KNOWN and can be held accountable to the very neighbors being charitable is far far more effective. BUT the goal for leftists is not to help the poor and help them solve the problems in their lives. As with all pols (GOPe and abortion I'm looking at you), if you solve a problem, what do you campaign and rake in the donor dollars with next time?

A superb article! One aspect of the problem described by the author that isn’t addressed - where are the families of the people she mentions? I live in Puerto Rico, which is statistically the poorest jurisdiction in the United States. You see practically no homelessness here, I suspect because families and churches will not permit it.

Paterson, NJ. reminds me of where I grew up.
Lots of poor people. Lots of sick people.
You don't want to be poor. People look down the end of their noses at you. It's like people have a need to be 'superior' to someone. It's not limited to race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. One aspect where I grew up was a mutual dislike between people of Eastern European decent and Western European decent.
Apparently, some people don't have anything better to do than strip others of their worth and make them feel helpless. Totally understand where the author is coming from.
And don't get sick. Get sick and you get poor.
Totally agree with the author's view of lefty Democrats. Sadly, the Republicans aren't much better. All too often, can't tell them apart.

#8 ladyhen is correct
the left doesn't want to solve problems as they need them come next election.
every 2 years they scream that conservatives are going to kill social security and medicare but in the intervening years they do nothing to secure them as they slowly go broke
the left are like drug dealers handing out just enough freebies to keep their victims hooked.
IMO the worst part is they are mostly lawyers who know nothing of the people nd trades which keep the country running

We are helping illegal aliens from over a hundred different countries but we can't help our own poor. The people from Paterson could all adopt a Spanish accent and move into luxury hotels in New York City, that's how screwed up the left is.

It seems she is an adjunct professor. Colleges and universities pay obscenely meager wages to adjuncts. Even full professors - before they are tenured - are paid ridiculously low salaries. Where does all that tuition money go? Not to the actual instructors!

FTA: " “After the revolution,” the Left says, wealth will be redistributed, and everything will be great. Meanwhile, there is nothing we can do to ameliorate our fate. The Left insists that the poor must wallow in misery, and thereby prove capitalism’s wickedness."
This is the real purpose of the welfare state and their permanent underclass; to provide a living tableau of capitalism's supposed "wickedness". A pile of excrement that the holier-than-thou communists can perpetually rub the imperfect good's nose so that to prove God's plan for humanity is a lie. The author writes of "learned helplessness and worthlessness", which is another component of the Left's evil attack on the dignity of men and women. She relays an episode of a medical appointment wherein she must take public transportation involving walking and bus transfers, taking lots of time. When she finally arrives at the medical facility, the appointment has been cancelled. The poor are not worthy of a phone call to let them know about a cancellation; their time is not valuable, they are worthless. They are just guinea pigs for the medical industrial complex.
In her neighborhood she sees families struggling to educate their children, working hard at low-paying jobs while living is sub-standard housing, and dodging junkies passed out on the street. Meanwhile, politicians are throwing money away on "social programs" like needle-exchanges and "safe places" where dealers can make drug deals and their customers can shoot up. Lefty policies are designed to make more people poor, helpless and worthless.
Really, how far away are any of us from being poor? You've got investments; but what about the stock market, mutual funds, banks? Are they really that secure? You've got health insurance; but are those companies really secure? We've found out in the last several years that the people running things in the major corporations, governments, industries are generally all compromised towards this "New World Order" and "Great Reset". Five years ago who would have believed the whole world would have locked down for two years?
