Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) invited Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to testify at a May 2 hearing on court ethics. Roberts delivered his answer Tuesday: thanks, but no thanks.
Roberts wrote a letter to Durbin which was released by a court spokesperson:
I must respectfully decline your invitation.
Testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee by the Chief Justice of the United States is exceedingly rare as one might expect in light of separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence.
Boom.

Harry Belafonte, the actor, producer, singer and activist who made calypso music a national phenomenon with “Day-O” (The Banana Boat Song) and used his considerable stardom to draw attention to Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights issues and injustices around the world, has died. He was 96.
Belafonte, recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2014, died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his Manhattan home on the Upper West Side with his wife, Pamela, by his side, longtime spokesman Ken Sunshine told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said in a report released on Tuesday that the Limit, Save, Grow Act would reduce the deficit by $4.8 trillion over the next ten years.
The CBO report found that the debt limit plan would drastically cut the growth of spending between 2023 and 2033. The nonpartisan analysis agency found:
The bill’s cap on discretionary funding would result in savings of $3.194.5 trillion over ten years
Scrapping energy tax credits would save $569.5 billion
Reducing funding for the IRS would save $119.7 billion
Implementing work requirements [for] Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would save $120 billion

Now that President Biden has rolled out his first campaign advertisement of the 2024 cycle, we’ve learned that his theme is going to be “Let’s finish the job.” As with so much else that we’ve watched unfold over the past two years, that video left me feeling like I was watching some sort of poorly scripted dystopian movie. He’s hardly the first president to adopt such a theme, but surely he’s aware that most of his target audience (likely voters who are interested in the election) have access to the internet or at least a television, right? We’ve all witnessed “the job” that he’s done thus far and the results

President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced his intention to run for a second term in the White House, and nobody cares, including his base. Biden’s announcement, which was highly anticipated by absolutely no one, came in a video titled “Freedom.”
In the video, the president reiterated his tired old diatribes about fighting for the “soul of our nation,” fighting for “democracy” and “blah blah blah.”
While some in the activist media are unsuccessfully trying to garner excitement for this development, recent polling suggests that even Democrats aren’t all that enthused about Biden seeking another nap term as president.
According to a recent CBS News/YouGov poll, only 22 percent of Democrats expressed excitement

Washington governor Jay Inslee signed three gun control bills on Tuesday, including a ban on AR-15s and dozens of other semiautomatic rifles.
The new measures will go into effect immediately. In addition to the semiautomatic rifle ban, a ten-day waiting period for all gun purchases will be instituted. There is also a measure to enable the state attorney general or private citizens to sue gun manufacturers and dealers under public-nuisance laws if they negligently allow their guns to be sold to minors or straw purchasers, the Seattle Times reported.
“These weapons of war, assault weapons, have no reason other than mass murder,” Inslee said at the signing ceremony.

Georgia’s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is urging local law enforcement to prepare for possible indictments this summer in her 2020 election inquiry focused on former President Donald Trump and his allies.
In a letter dated Monday to Fulton Sheriff Patrick Labat, the prosecutor said she will be “announcing charging decisions” resulting from her investigation during the Fulton County Superior Court’s fourth term of court, which spans July 11 and September 1.
Willis spoke of the need for “heightened security and preparedness” as “open-sourced “intelligence indicated an announcement “may provoke a significant public reaction.”

The Biden administration is quietly preparing for the possibility that if Ukraine’s spring counteroffensive falls short of expectations, critics at home and allies abroad will argue that America has come up short, too.
Ukraine’s ever-imminent counteroffensive will attempt to retake Russian-seized territory most likely in the east and south, though for operational reasons no senior officials from Kyiv have detailed specifics.
Publicly, President Joe Biden’s team has offered unwavering support for Ukraine, pledging to load it up with weapons and economic aid for “as long as it takes.” But, if the impending fighting season yields limited gains, administration officials have expressed privately they fear being faced with a two-headed monster

Everybody is up in arms about Tucker Carlson’s and Fox News’ split.
Lots of rumors regarding why it happened are floating around, and as with all breaking news stories you should wait for a bit before you trust anything anybody says. “Inside sources” or outright speculations are unreliable. Was it Dominion? Was it Tucker wanting to defend himself? Was it something else?
I don’t know and only a small circle of people so far do. And even they will probably have diverging views.
What interests me is how Tucker is a very different kind of media voice and one who can’t easily fit at any cable news station.

Washington — Susan Rice, one of President Biden's most trusted aides and his top domestic policy official, will be leaving the administration next month in what will mark one of the most high-profile departures from his administration, the White House announced Monday.
Since the start of Mr. Biden's presidency, Rice has led the domestic policy council, a powerful White House office overseeing a wide-ranging set of issues, from health care and gun control initiatives, to U.S. immigration and border policy. Rice served as national security adviser and United Nations ambassador under former President Barack Obama. In a statement, Mr. Biden praised Rice's tenure, highlighting her pivotal role in advancing his agenda.

Don Lemon was terminated from his anchor role at CNN, he announced Monday.
The news comes after Variety published a story earlier this month on allegations that he mistreated his female colleagues over the course of his career there. And earlier this year, he faced backlash over widely criticized comments he made on-air. Lemon announced the news on Twitter, saying he was informed by his agent that he was being terminated.
"I am stunned," Lemon wrote. "After 17 years at CNN I would have thought someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly."
