Florida lawmakers are poised to pass a measure that would permit the death penalty for pedophiles who sexually assault children under 12 years old, a move that will likely trigger legal challenges and questions about its constitutionality.
The House will consider its version of the bill (HB 1297) on Thursday, while the Senate version (SB 1342) was cleared by the Rules Committee on Tuesday, paving the way for it to be presented to the full Senate.
The proposed legislation goes against decades of U.S. Supreme Court and Florida Supreme Court rulings that have prohibited the execution of defendants in rape and sexual abuse cases.

A federal court on Tuesday denied Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s request for a temporary restraining order to prevent House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) from questioning a former prosecutor about Bragg’s case against former President Donald Trump.
Bragg filed a lawsuit against Jordan on Tuesday in an attempt to stop him from following through on a subpoena he issued to Mark Pomerantz, a former special assistant in the Manhattan district attorney’s office who left when Bragg took over out of frustration that Bragg paused the Manhattan office’s investigation into Trump.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s urgent request to enter a restraining order against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was rejected on April 11, the same day it was filed.
U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil, a Trump appointee, turned down Bragg’s emergency request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against Jordan.

WASHINGTON — Former Obama White House stenographer Mike McCormick tells The Post that he wants to testify before the federal grand jury in Delaware considering charges against first son Hunter Biden, saying he has relevant information — ignored by the FBI — that implicates President Biden in a foreign influence-peddling “conspiracy.”
“Joe Biden committed crimes in Ukraine in a conspiracy with [current national security adviser] Jake Sullivan,” McCormick said.
“I’m a witness to that happening.”
McCormick visited Ukraine with then-Vice President Biden three times and says that on a 2014 trip, Sullivan — then a Biden national security aide — briefed reporters
Fox News Digital reported on another bombshell in the Hunter Biden scandal which added to the mounting evidence that despite what President Joe Biden claims, it appears he did in fact know about his delinquent drug addict son Hunter’s business dealings. Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would 'never drop out' of the presidential race even if he got convicted of a crime, telling Fox News' Tucker Carlson, 'It's not my thing.'
During a Tuesday sit-down at Mar-a-Lago, Carlson had asked if there was anything prosecutors could throw at Trump legally that would convince him to drop out of the 2024 White House race.
The former president said there was not. 'No, I'd never drop out. I'd never drop out,' he replied. 'It's not my thing, I wouldn't do it.'
Trump made the comments after suggesting that President Joe Biden would be the one to bow out.

An Obama-appointed federal judge hit two teachers who sued over their school district’s mandatory training on becoming an “anti-racist” with nearly $313,000 in attorney’s fees.
Springfield, Missouri teachers Brooke Henderson and Jennifer Lumley sued in 2021 over their school district’s “equity training” on “oppression, white supremacy, and systemic racism,” which they say compelled their speech and forced them to express views they disagreed with as a condition of their employment. Southeastern Legal Foundation, representing the teachers, appealed what they called an “unprecedented and overtly hostile” district court order forcing them to pay attorney fees to the Eighth Circuit on Friday.
The campaign. Not Nikki Haley. That’s the message. For the campaign to claim that Nikki stays above the fray, the campaign sent out a memo full of snark and vinegar. Haley’s campaign manager Betsy Ankney wrote the memo. Mostly she ripped into Trump’s “drama” but she made sure to include her opinion on Governor DeSantis, too. She did not, however, mention Governor Asa Hutchinson or Vivek Ramaswamy by name who have officially entered the GOP primary race.
Governor DeSantis has not officially entered the race but that isn’t stopping the others from jumping ugly on him. Everyone expects him to take the leap when the Florida Legislature completes its session.
Former president Trump on Tuesday claimed that President Biden does not appear to be steering the ship of his own administration, which he said has been hijacked by “vicious, smart” progressives.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson for Fox News, Trump projected that Biden will not be capable of running for president a second time, alluding to his observable deteriorating mental and physical condition.
“I don’t think he can,” Trump told the host. “There’s something wrong.”
Noting Biden’s absence from press events and general checked-out attitude, Trump said “it’s not him” driving much of the agenda being imposed at the federal level.
