Brandon Johnson took a slight lead over Paul Vallas on Tuesday night, according to early, unofficial returns with approximately 92% of precincts counted. About 7,100 votes separated the two candidates, according to the Chicago Board of Elections. With more than 90,000 mail ballots yet to be returned to the Chicago Board of Elections, it was not clear whether Chicagoans would know by the end of the night who will be elected Chicago’s 57th mayor. With 92% of precincts reporting, Johnson was just leading with 50.7% of the vote to Vallas’ 49.3%. Both candidates spent the final hours of what promises

Renowned San Francisco drag performer Heklina was found dead Monday in London, England, where she was performing in a touring show, CBS Bay Area reported. The death of Heklina — also known as actor Stefan Grygelko — was first reported in social media posts by fellow drag artist and performing partner Peaches Christ (aka Joshua Grannell), with whom Heklina was touring in "Mommie Queerest," a musical parody of the 1981 Joan Crawford biopic "Mommie Dearest." "I am living in a real-life nightmare so forgive me if I don't have all the answers just now," read the message Grannell posted on both the

President Joe Biden traveled to the Cummins alternative power manufacturing center in Fridley, Minnesota, on Monday, the latest stop on the soft rollout of the president's 2024 reelection campaign. In particular, Biden took credit for investing in new, clean energy projects and "bringing the supply chain back to America" through the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act, and his remarks closely resembled speeches the president has recently delivered in Maryland, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. When the United States government makes considerable resources available for new industries, what does that do to businesses?" Biden asked Monday.

Oil prices soared nearly 6% on Monday after Saudi Arabia and other major oil producers said they will cut production by 1.15 million barrels per day from May until the end of the year. The cuts in oil output by the so-called OPEC+ countries immediately pushed crude costs higher and were expected to boost gas prices in the U.S. and other countries. Higher oil prices also will complicate the efforts by central banks to rein in inflation. "This will create both political waves across Europe and even higher general inflation in the USA, leading to renewed pressure on the Federal

HELSINKI — Finland’s main conservative party claimed victory in a parliamentary election Sunday in an extremely tight three-way race in which right-wing populists took second place, leaving Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democratic Party in third, dashing her hopes for reelection. The center-right National Coalition Party (NCP) claimed victory Sunday evening with all of the votes counted, coming out on top at 20.8%. They were followed by right-wing populist party The Finns with 20.1%, while the Social Democrats garnered 19.9%. With the top three parties each getting around 20% of the vote, no party is in position to form a

“I wonder where is all my relation/Friendship to all — and every nation.” In a message that eclipsed time and space, Daisy Whitner could hear “Grandpa Dave” speaking to her. As she read the rhyming couplet inscribed in a large clay jar made before the Civil War, the 84-year-old Northeast D.C. resident could feel pain and loneliness in the anguished voice of her enslaved ancestor. He is remembered today as Dave the Potter, who risked severe punishment for signing his stoneware works that can sell today in excess of a million dollars. “It really saddened me,” said Whitner in a

The Biden administration is preparing to implement a sweeping nationwide ban on commonly used light bulbs as part of its energy efficiency and climate agenda. The regulations, which prohibit retailers from selling incandescent light bulbs, were finalized by the Department of Energy (DOE) in April 2022 and are slated to go into effect on Aug. 1, 2023. The DOE will begin full enforcement of the ban on that date, but it has already urged retailers to begin transitioning away from the light bulb type and, in recent months, begun issuing warning notices to companies. "The lighting industry is already embracing

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman has left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after six weeks of inpatient treatment for clinical depression, with plans to return to the Senate when the chamber resumes session in mid-April, his office said Friday. In a statement, Fetterman's office said he is back home in Braddock, in western Pennsylvania, with his depression “in remission,” and gave details on his treatment — including that his depression was treated with medication and that he is wearing hearing aids for hearing loss. It was the latest medical episode for the Democrat, who won last fall's

Activists on Wednesday demanded that the state of California pay millions of dollars to each Black resident in reparations as a way to make amends for slavery and subsequent discrimination, dismissing the idea of payments of $5 million per person as "nothing" and "too little." The demands were made at an in-person meeting of the California Reparations Task Force, which was created by state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020. The committee was hearing comments from the public as it considers final recommendations to submit to the California Legislature, which will then decide whether to implement the measures

Award-winning PBS News reporter Jane Ferguson said she was "violently assaulted" by a man on the New York City subway this week, leaving her "ear ringing and face on fire" with a good Samaritan helping get her to safety. "At 6.30pm today I was violently assaulted on the NYC subway. A man walked up to me in a busy rush-hour car and punched me, hard, on the side of the face. I kneeled down on the floor in shock, and steadied myself, unsure what had just happened, my ear ringing and face on fire," Ferguson tweeted on Monday night. "The

Calls for police to release the "manifesto" that authorities say was written ahead of Monday's Nashville school shooting has prompted concern among LGBTQ+ groups, who caution against the publication of such a document. While many details remain to be unveiled about the massacre at The Covenant School this week, police have identified the shooter as 28-year-old Audrey Hale. On Monday, Hale, armed with two assault-style weapons—a rifle and a pistol—as well as a handgun, fatally shot three children and three staff members at the school before being killed by police. Speaking at a press conference hours after the
