Based on what's seen in the press, President Trump has "turned on" his own supporters on the abortion issue, supposedly flinging blame at them for the weak midterm showing in what should have been a red wave year.
Ben Domenech's column headline at the Spectator reads:
Trump unleashes his disdain for pro-life voters
Tom Joyce's at The Examiner reads:
Trump abandoned pro-lifers. We should return the favor
According to Newsweek, this passsage from Trump's post-midterm statement "proved" that Trump had done an about-face on some of his biggest loyalists:

Compromise is not always a bad thing. But this thought troubles me: when I die and meet our Maker, will he say to me, "Who were you to agree to the taking of innocent lives?"
To those who believe there is no God, the question remains: "How do we justify the taking of an innocent life when other options are available?"
In the case of a threat to the life of the mother, maybe I could say to God, "Both lives were innocent, and we tried to save the baby."
In the case of rape or incest -- horrible crimes -- could we legislate this compromise? Track down the rapist -- put him in jail for a very long time -- offer the victim a substantial amount of money if she has the baby -- put the baby up for adoption if the victim so desires.

The guiding principle should be that abortion for convenience is banned. How many weeks after conception can be debated and a reasonable middle ground can be found.

I agree with the article. The media and the "Never Trumpers" are distorting what Trump said. You must read for yourself what was said. It was about the realities of political strategy just before the election. Lindsay G. should have known better and perhaps he had a motive. As the article states, Graham had this bill in the Senate that would essentially ban all abortion with no exceptions. He knew it had no chance of passing, but was just enough for the democrats to use to scare all their voters. Trump is pro-life, but realistic and politically smart.

The abortion issue was used as just another tactic to keep Trump out of Washington.
Blah blah blah, Orange Man Bad. Yeah, we know.
Trump is bad? Compared to whom?
Simple two-point questionnaire for any potential Presidential candidate. Are they honest? Are they competent? Trump scores higher than 90% of the candidates. Just goes to show the poor quality of most of our choices for President.

I would really like to give the 'columnists' the benefit of the doubt as in -
what Mr. Trump said, is, unfortunately, simply too complicated for the 'columnists'
to grasp let alone comment on !
Sadly, I know better. No matter what Mr. Trump says, no matter where he says it,
no matter who he says it to and no matter what time of day he says it, our wonderful
'free press' will try to twist his words and meanings.
Take EVERYTHING that comes out of our 'free press' with several handfuls of salt !

Trump is again offering simple answers to complex questions! Abortion is either murder of a baby or it isn’t! Politics be dammed!

Trump was very clear in his support for McCarthy as Speaker. I guess a lot of Trump supporters caveat their support in areas where they are naturally smarter than Trump. Some appear to excoriate McCarthy for the same political pragmatism that they find as a statesman-like attribute in Trump. This is getting hard to follow.

Nobody can state without reservation what it is that American women want; only a liar would claim they know. Besides, the mercury changes twice a day on any scale. If you knew at nine a.m. what women want for sure, it'll change before noon and there's nothing you can do about it.

#6, I agree. Abortion is an abomination. Period. However, when is the last time you saw a PSA encouraging contraception or, God forbid, abstinence? How about teaching our kids responsibility that comes with being sexually active? Schools will teach kids about homosexuality, oral sex, anal sex and every perversion under the sun but how much time is given to contraception? But they do not touch on responsibility that comes with sexual activity.
Furthermore, far too many grown women use abortion as birth control and that is unacceptable religious or not. Look at the households that have no fathers. They just walk away after they have had their fun leaving the child fatherless. Why do we not advocate for responsibility by males? It takes two to tango but I never hear anything about males or females taking responsibility for their sexual decisions. In this day and time when contraception is readily available, there is little excuse for not availing yourself of it if you are going to be sexually active. If the government can put on PSA’s to advocate for a vaccine with questionable results and harmful side effects constantly on television and social media, why not advocate for sexual responsibility and birth control to prevent pregnancy. Start a campaign that focuses on responsible birth control.
Of course my position on abortion would be to ban it. I don’t want another innocent baby dismembered, burned with saline or cut up into specific pieces so they may be sold to researchers. How anyone can justify this is beyond comprehension. Schools should educate students to the realities of what happens to a baby during an abortion. You want to get sexual perversion out of schools just threaten to expose the abortion industry and educate students on the reality of what it does to the baby. Of course, that will never happen and that’s where parents need to step up.

I see a parallel between the role slavery played in the founding of our nation and abortion in today's struggle to salvage the republic. Our founders concluded they couldn't triumph over British Tyranny and end slavery at the same time. The unity between colonies achieved by tabling that crucial issue indeed proved essential. Does anybody believe that permanently handing our country to the communist left will result in the greatest preservation of human life in the long run? Can we possibly end the brutal killing of unquestionably viable human babies even live born survivors of botched abortion if we don't table the battle over all abortion? That is my struggle on the issue.

Great points, #9. But wouldn't it also be nice if a certain behavior and human quality formally known as morality took hold again in our nation not to mention, others, too. But, oops, we as a once moral society have turned our back on God in favor of obeyance to a secular deep state. Can a society be moral in a secular world. Nope. So we see why pro-abortion individuals rationalize abortion as a socially acceptable behavior.

Where I live we were bombarded with TV ads claiming that Republican candidates were against abortion event to save the life of the mother. And some of them did take that position. The vast majority of voters want the exceptions Trump is talking about. Running abortion-absolutists is a losing strategy.

As so often Rinktum encapsulates the issue precisely. Unfortunately, this and many other societies have gone so far with the “individual rights” conviction that the individual rights of others is no longer considered. This in contrast to the evil of the opposite seen in some countries where there are essentially no individual rights, only the edicts of the ruler of the day. Not a world encouraging optimism.

It is true that the abortion issued played a large part in the midterm election with young women...but...they forgot they can have an abortion if early enough and of course they can used birth control if they are so inclined to a romp in the hay...it's NOT about others making decisions for them...it's squarely on their shoulders...and I'm getting a little tired of hearing their cries/screams for freedom...they have their freedom to simply say NO!!

The Supreme Court said there was nothing in the US Constitution providing a right to abortion, therefore it was up to the states to sort this out. The individual states proceeded to do just that with a wide range of approaches. Since most states listened to their citizens and voted for restrictions accept to the majority of their citizens, the uproar was dying down.
Then, two months before the election Lindsey Graham submitted a bill to create a federal anti abortion law. This resulted in a tsunami of woman voting for Democrats to prevent this from happening.
The reality was that their was no chance this bill could pass and become law with the Senate, House and the presidency all controlled by the Democrats. This incredibly moronic act by Graham alone was enough to change the Republican wave into a ripple.
President Trump only suggested that states needed to go slow so as not to outrage voters.
