I went to college in the fall of 1969. Tuition about 90.00 a semester. I had a small scholarship and my parents said they'd pay the rest but I had to buy my own lab supplies and textbooks. Those sometimes cost way more than the tuition. I worked part-time and then full time in the summer and graduated not owing a cent. Costs really began to go up when the Department of Education was started. If I could, I'd close it down right now.

Keep in mind...the Nationalization of college loans under Obama, was part of Obamacare...passed in a reconciliation Bill... because it and other aspects would never pass on their own. In it...Govt taking over the student loan industry would stop the govt outlay costs from subsidizing private lenders as well as make the Govt the recipient of $60Billion in loan payments from the borrowers...this calculation created the "positive balance sheet" score needed to help pay for obamacare. They swore it was revenue neutral and in fact would LOWER the deficit. Now however they are going to write off $250-750 Billion instead of receiving that $60billion, and at the same time add several more years of subsidies to Obamacare itself which was sold as being 100% self supporting....and doing so yet again via a reconciliation Bill and executive orders because the votes were/are not there in the Senate to pass it..

Here are some dirty little secrets concerning tuition costs. In their attempts to attract students, many schools have built fancy apartment complexes with private rooms and shared common room. The problem is that the students don't want to pay the price. A local university, Edinboro, in Erie County, Pennsylvania (well, it is no longer a university, but instead has been turned into a branch campus of the newly crated University of Western Pennsylvania or some such title, but that is a separate story) had recently built those fancy dorms described above. And they are trying to sell those dorms, because they are mostly unoccupied. Another expensive recruiting device is sports- every sport one could imagine. Why so many sports? To boost student enrollments. Athletic scholarships are provided on the basis od/f sex balance, required under Title IX. During my time as dean at a private university, I tried to attend sports contests, but found it impossible, because so many contests were going on simultaneously. Who pays for all of those sports? The students do, though their tuition. What about sports that no one wants to watch? It doesn't matter. Did you know that Dementia Jo's alma mater, Syracuse University, was the national champion in Division I girls badminton? One final area contributing to tuition increases is affirmative action, now renamed Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Schools are required to build staffing of those offices - labor cost, fringe benefits, conference travel, amount to tens of millions of dollars in some large schools - and tuition pays for those offices. Higher education is a mess, Dementia Jo is incapable of understanding that, and his handlers don't care.

After adjusting for inflation tuition has gone up by factor of five since 1975. A pointless increase.

Until the government stops handing out loans to everyone who asks for one, the problem will continue.
