‘unplanned’ babies

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh discussed “the abortion issue” in an interview with ESPN over the weekend, and said “we’ll raise that baby” should someone in his family or program be involved with an unplanned pregnancy. (snip) "I encourage them if they have a pregnancy that wasn’t planned, to go through with it, go through with it. Let that unborn child be born, and if at that time, you don’t feel like you can care for it, you don’t have the means or the wherewithal, then [wife] Sarah and I will take that baby.”

“We’ve got a big house, we will raise that baby.”
God Bless them, we need more team coaches to voice this plan when necessary.
Love those Harbaugh Brothers!

I might be a good idea to give his players a lecture on birth control.

Considering the proclivity of young black men to get anyone with female body parts pregnant, Harbaugh's family may end up numbering in the hundreds.

My great Grandfather and his brothers who survived the civil war, came back to Madison County in Central Texas after their parole from yankee prison camps. The brothers were all of the Cherokee and Choctaw persuasion, carried on the 1850 Census rolls as Free Persons of Color, planned to round up stray cattle that had gone feral and herd them to the railhead in Oletha, Kansas for sale and shipping to eastern markets. They were successful in their venture but in the process, they rounded up scores of orphaned children from all around Central Texas, whose parents did not survive the civil war years. My gr grandfather, his oldest brother, and their spouses wound up adopting 79 kids of multiple and mixed races, black, red, brown, and white. They always claimed that the kids were a blessing from God and they were raised to be good Texans and Americans. The key downside was that commercial electricity and air conditioning were many decades away from being invented. I hope the Harbaughs follow through and are similarly blessed.

I grew up in a place (it's round on the ends and HI in the middle) where total disdain for UofM is expected and encouraged. And the Wolverines themselves have behaved in poorly enough over the years to justify and reinforce my attitude and disgust (most recently with the despicable behavior of the Michigan med school students at their White Coat ceremony -- honestly, I'd retract their admissions and let them go try to be doctors somewhere else, if it were up to me). And Harbaugh, too, has generally been pretty darn easy to dislike, or at least roll my eyes at (sleeping over at a recruit's house? and the pathetic "born on third base" comments? -- come on, Jim). But, now... NOW I'm so confused. It's very, very strange for me to be in alignment with him AND filled with respect and admiration for him. He's making me like him -- which, in a strange way, makes me dislike him even more. See, it's confusing! And makes no sense! It reminds me of that old Sports Illustrated feature, "This week's sign of the apocalypse." I won't be rooting for his team anytime soon, but I may start pulling for him. And that doesn't make sense, either. One thing I'll definitely start doing is praying for him, because he's going to face some certain wrath from that very liberal school where he coaches. Hang in there, Coach. You've got your eye on the right prize.

Trusting that Sarah was consulted before Jim made those remarks, methinks he may want to reframe his altruistic offer. Maybe adding some restrictions, qualifications, and a bunch of expectations! We all know where the road of good intentions can lead.

#9, I’m so with you! I’m a mega college football fan (Tennessee/SEC) and have always not liked Michigan. (When Michigan played Notre Dame, pre-overtime days, I used to root for a 0-0 tie). Dammit, now I may even root for UM this year!

Sometimes we revel in the defeat of a totally odious and characterless opponent. Sometimes we are thankful for a well-earned victory over a respected foe. Thank you Coach Harbaugh.
