What makes someone a hero? How about a Good Samaritan? Evidently, such questions are contentious.
And a Sunday incident has some insisting a brave bystander shouldn’t be celebrated.
At the Greenwood Park Mall in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area, a man opened fire. As reported by Deseret News, 20-year-old Johnathan Sapirman got off 24 rifle rounds.
Tragically, three were murdered: Victor Gomez, 30; and couple Rosa Rivera de Pineda, 37, and Pedro Pineda, 56. Two more were injured: a 20-year-old female shot in the leg; and a 12-year minorly wounded by a deflected bullet.

The trial against Nikolas Cruz, the admitted gunman in the 2018 school massacre in Parkland, Fla., kicks off Monday — and jurors will decide whether he’ll be given the death penalty or rot in prison instead.
The 12-person jury in Fort Lauderdale will not weigh whether Cruz is guilty in the case, since the mass shooter in October copped to killing 17 people at his former school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, on Feb. 14, 2018.
Instead, the jury — which took nearly three months to select — will deliberate on whether Cruz should be sentenced to capital punishment or life in prison without parole.

The shameful video of Uvalde cops cowering in the hallway while some freakish mutant murdered little kids brings to mind an important point. It's not a point about the cowardice of badly-led police officers – that point has been made. It's not the hygiene focus of the guy who paused just standing there to splurt a dollop of hand sanitizer into his paw. It's not even about the fact that we normal citizens cannot rely on the forces of the government to protect us.
It is the fact that the members of our garbage ruling elite cannot rely on the forces of the government to protect them.

The latest cause celebre for leftists in Minnesota is the case of Tekle Sundberg. Sundberg tried to murder a young woman, Cassandra Yarbrough, whom he apparently did not know. Police were called, Sundberg fired repeatedly from within an apartment, there was a standoff that lasted for hours, officers tried to negotiate with Sundberg and brought in family members to try to persuade him to surrender. Under circumstances that are not yet clear, officers eventually shot and killed Sundberg. My colleague David Zimmer, a veteran of 37 years in law enforcement, has a sober and unbiased review of the facts as we know them so far.

It is difficult, perhaps impossible, to describe just how bad President Joe Biden is at his job. Comparisons to Jimmy Carter are pervasive, but trite -- and too flattering to Carter. Perhaps a more apt (and dark) analogy, given how civic strife has reached a fever pitch, is to James Buchanan, historians' typical consensus pick for worst president ever.
Indeed, to fully capture the absolute horror that is this senile near-octogenarian's presidential swan song would be a Herculean task, better suited for a David McCullough-style biography than a column. But for present purposes, and despite the difficulty of narrowing down from such a vast sample size,

A senior adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Qatar’s al Jazeera TV on Sunday that Iran is technically capable of building a nuclear weapon.
Iran has been denying any interest in constructing a nuclear weapon. The CIA claims a nascent Iranian bomb program was shut down in 2003. Nonetheless, the regime assembled a nuclear infrastructure capable of putting all the pieces in place for building a weapon as soon as it was able to enrich uranium to the 90% level.
Now, Iran just activated nearly 200 advanced centrifuges that would give them the capability of spinning up enough highly enriched, bomb-grade uranium in a matter of days.

As a conservative profoundly involved in the “culture wars,” I have come to realize that the problem I have is not with liberals, Leftists, apostles of Woke, and other assorted ideologues and disreputables. I expect nothing from them but deceit, vulgarity, hate-spew, and ignorance, and so do not feel especially shocked by their behavior. The problem I have is with conservatives, too many of whom do not appear to fully honor conservative principles and values. They often seem to temporize with their antagonists, can act at times quite autocratically, and are occasionally distressingly superficial in their assessments of contemporary events. Human, all too human,

Jak Knight, a stand-up comic poised for stardom after co-creating and starring in the new Peacock series “Bust Down,” died Thursday night at the age of 28.
The up-and-coming star’s death stunned the close-knit comedy community, with members calling him a “phenom” who was “unapologetically hilarious.” Knight’s family announced his death in Los Angeles through a representative, but no details were forthcoming.

Rory McIlroy's quest to end an eight-year wait for a major triumph took a huge step closer after a stunning round of golf on day three at The Open as he and Viktor Hovland now share a four-shot lead going into Sunday's final round.
Australian Cameron Smith had led by two strokes at the end of round two, finishing on 13 under, but he and Cameron Young will be the penultimate pair to tee off tomorrow having carded rounds of 73 and 71 respectively on Saturday.
McIlroy hasn’t had a major win since 2014 when he won the PGA Championship, but his round of 66 that included five birdies and

I came across a very enlightening video featuring gun rights advocate and lawyer Colion Noir. With the ongoing debate over guns and the right to bear arms, it is essential that those who exercise their Second Amendment rights understand the legalities associated with carrying a concealed firearm.
When I became a first-time gun owner last September, I sought out as much advice on the matter as I could. I was immediately struck by the number of people who told me how many buy guns and rarely train with them. It was also concerning to me that many don’t understand that even in cases in which self-defense seems obvious,

Australia’s Cameron Smith leads the 150th British Open at the halfway stage after a superb second round of 64 on Friday left him on 13 under par for the tournament, while Cameron Young and Rory McIlroy lurk just behind, but an emotional Tiger Woods failed to make the weekend.
Smith, the world number six with the trademark mullet, followed an opening 67 with an eight-under-par second round to lead by two strokes from Young, the 25-year-old New Yorker. Brisbane-native Smith’s round on Friday featured six birdies – including at each of the first three holes – an eagle at the par-five 14th, and no dropped shots.

I’ve written more than once that the Associated Press is our number one source of liberal press bias, so this comes as a surprise. At a time when the Left is trying to use gun control to stave off electoral disaster, the AP unexpectedly gets rational:
"The Stylebook's weapons entry offers guidance on terms including semi-automatic rifle, assault rifle, assault weapon, military-style rifle and modern sporting rifle." (Snip)
“Avoid assault rifle and assault weapon, which are highly politicized terms….” Exactly. There is literally no such thing as an “assault rifle” or “assault weapon.” These are made-up political phrases that have no meaning in the real world.
Comments:
Execution ASAP would be appropriate for this mass murderer, who set off red flags like Independence Day fireworks in the months before he shot up the school. He should have been stopped ten times before the attack and needs to be whacked. Gun control laws really stopped him, didn't they?
