The Supreme Court voted 6–3 on June 23 to strike down New York state’s draconian concealed carry gun permitting system on constitutional grounds.
(snip) An individual who wants to carry a firearm outside his home may obtain an unrestricted license to “have and carry” a concealed “pistol or revolver” if he can prove that “proper cause exists” for doing so, according to state law. An applicant satisfies the “proper cause” requirement only if he can “demonstrate a special need for self-protection distinguishable from that of the general community,” requirement only if he can “demonstrate a special need for self-protection distinguishable from that of the general community,”

It’s hard to say there is anything really new about Joe Biden’s friendship with a growing list of despots such as Iran’s Khamenei, Venezuela’s Maduro, Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman, China’s Xi, and Russia’s Putin.
All those oil potentates must have celebrated their good luck on day one of his administration when Biden signaled his obeisance to the reactionary (yes, that’s what they are in real-world terms) green crowd by putting the kibosh on the Keystone XL pipeline. (Oil importer Xi had his own reasons to celebrate.)
It’s been all downhill for homegrown U.S. energy from there.

The hugely popular short-video app TikTok is but “another invasive tool” for Beijing’s espionage campaign on America, U.S. lawmakers said after news of leaked internal recordings allegedly showing the app’s private U.S. user data being repeatedly accessed in China.
Between at least September 2021 and January, engineers in China had access to the app’s U.S. data, according to leaked recordings of 80 internal meetings cited by BuzzFeed News. (snip)

Nearly three-fourths of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grantees fail to properly report their researchers’ ties to foreign countries and companies, according to an investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General (HHS-IG).
“More than two-thirds of grantees failed to meet one or more requirements for investigators’ disclosure of all foreign financial interests and support. These problems often involved requirements to disclose non-publicly traded equity interests from foreign entities and to disclose in-kind resources, professional affiliations, or participation in a foreign ‘talents’ program,” reads the HHS-IG report, which was made public earlier in June.

While there is growing speculation that federal agents and Capitol Police were involved in instigating acts of violence during the Jan. 6, 2021 protests and recording responses for the purposes of entrapment, evidence now proves that “plainclothes” members of a special Electronic Surveillance Unit (ESU) were embedded among the protesters for the purposes of conducting video surveillance. Evidence also points to a day of security deficiencies and police provocation for the purpose of entrapment.

A White House official on June 20 made a false claim about COVID-19 vaccines while encouraging parents to get their young children vaccinated.
Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House’s COVID-19 response coordinator, said that “there have not been any serious side effects of these vaccines,” which is not true.
Severe allergic reactions, blood clotting, heart inflammation, and paralysis are among the serious side effects linked to the three COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States.
“There is a well-documented risk of myocarditis from the COVID vaccine, especially in young men and adolescent boys, and an elevated risk of clotting in young women with the Moderna vaccine,” Dr. Jay Bhattacharya,

Congress now has had more prime time committee hearings on the January 6th protest than it did on 9/11. I am not sure just what the purpose of the January 6th hearings are. Americans have turned their attention to inflation and recession.
But in Washington, where no one ever gets laid off and no one has to go to work if it snows, the show is the talk of the town. The rest of the country has to work today. DC closed for Juneteenth.
The great divide in America is not between lefties and righties. The divide is between the governed and the government. Two reports from Salena Zito(snip)confirm this.

PITTSBURGH — When the Hampton Battery was dedicated here in 1871 to a young Civil War soldier who lost his life protecting the Union at Chancellorsville, Virginia, the granite monument was a point of pride for residents of this neighborhood. They would stroll along the trails of the lush park filled with trees located across the street from their homes along Cedar Avenue to honor the local hero.
Today, the battery's founder, Capt. Robert B. Hampton, who was remembered by the men who served under him as a born commander(sbuo" is now part of a different carnage in America as he stands watch over an open heroin market that has taken

If Americans are “really, really down,” as President Joe Biden suggests, it’s hardly surprising.
Many key aspects of economic, social and national life that were once viewed as smoothly running certainties are out of joint. The Covid-19 pandemic, though it has eased its deadly grip, has left a complicated legacy of challenges that are still disrupting daily life. Some are aggravations – like the more than 800 airline flights cancelled on Sunday. Others threaten Americans’ economic prospects and sense of safety and wellbeing, like the growing fears of a recession.
Such an atmosphere is sure to breed new turmoil in a nation seeing widening ideological divides ahead of midterm elections that

When the gender equity legislation known as Title IX became law in 1972, the politics of transgender sports was not even a blip in the national conversation. Today, it is one of the sharpest dividing points in American culture.
As the transformational law heads into its second half-century on the books, the Biden administration wants transgender athletes to enjoy the same protections Title IX originally gave to women when it was passed 50 years ago. That stance is at odds with efforts in states across the country.
