Oxford University Press has announced it will produce a new dictionary of “African American English,” which will include slang ranging from “hip” to “diss.” Black Harvard literary critic Henry Louis Gates Jr. will oversee the three-year project for Oxford Languages to compile the “Oxford Dictionary of African American English,” the publisher said in a news release Thursday. The new book will include “quotations taken from real examples of language in use,” alongside the usual Oxford dictionary notations on the meaning, pronunciation, spelling, usage and history of each word. “This will serve to acknowledge the contributions of African-American writers, thinkers, and artists, as well as everyday African Americans,

I have great respect for Professor Gates and his research. And this could make an outstanding linguistic contribution to the field. Unfortunately, as a retired professor who served on research committees over several decades, I can see the potential for abuse.

Some blacks have their own language because they refuse to speak correct English as it makes them look as if they are acting white. Of course, these are the people who you see on the nightly news committing crime.

A lot of the “African American English” is directly from the Gullah language (which is not really "English") developed by slaves to allow them to speak among themselves since they had a lot of different native languages, and to communicate with English speakers. Many people in southern coastal areas still speak the true Gullah but a lot of the same aspects can be heard in the broader "AA/black" population (even in other countries like Jamaica) who aren't direct Gullah speakers, now as it has carried over from the early days. This could be an interesting project, maybe even to document the evolution of the language over time. It's the group's money, if they want to spend it on this, have at it.

The 'proper' English that is taught in schools today would be a foreign tongue to those who grew up speaking Middle English. Languages change and that change is always by degrees of veering off the 'norm' and into something else. I remember a door to door dictionary salesman coming to our front door when I was maybe 12, back in 1969, he was bragging about how the new dictionary he was selling (Webster's? F&W?) contained updated words like 'hootenanny'. Some day future generations will dig this article up and comment "Grafe thi mankin frash. Yo?"

The only practical use I can even think of for this is to legitimize a bunch of poorly spelled words that you can use to get out of a tight spot while playing "Scrabble". Nonsense, you say! You can use this as a reference the next time you read a novel wherein the characters speak this inner-city patois. Well...no. if I had a book with dialogue like that, I wouldn't make it 10 pages in. Jerusalem—Israel’s outgoing coalition government will fast-track a bill this week to dissolve parliament, setting up the country for its fifth elections in three years, a Cabinet minister said Tuesday. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced on Monday that he would disband his alliance of eight ideologically diverse parties, a year after taking office, and send the country to the polls. A series of defections from his Yamina party had stripped the coalition of its majority in Israel’s parliament, known as the Knesset. Bennett cited the coalition’s failure earlier this month to extend a law that grants West Bank settlers special legal status as a main impetus for new elections.

We haven’t even had the 2022 election yet and talk of 2024 is already heating up. Naturally, Donald Trump remains at the top of the conversation on the Republican side, but Ron DeSantis has become nearly as talked about as a probable challenger. The latter has burst onto the scene the last two years as a no-nonsense, fighter of a governor who also has a knack for making the liberal press look ridiculous. Those are skills that GOP voters love, and they’ve earned DeSantis high marks nationally from the Republican base. Elections will not legitimize any government if they are rigged. We must end the absurdity whereby a private corporation can be hired to count our votes and then refuse to prove to us exactly how it got the final numbers. If the system is not completely transparent and auditable, you can never be confident in it. You can be completely justified in suspecting that it is fraudulent. When the public no longer trusts those who count the votes, then the outcome will be chaos. The 2020 election was rigged, but it is not up to us to prove that.

Polio may be spreading in the UK for the first time in nearly 40 years, health chiefs warned today as they declared a 'national incident'. Officials have found traces of a vaccine-derived version of the virus in sewage samples in parts of London and say it is 'likely' transmitting within the community. Parents are being urged to ensure their children are up to date with their polio vaccinations, particularly after the pandemic when school immunisation schemes were disrupted. All British children are supposed to have had the first of three polio jabs as a baby (Snip) The remaining, type 1, wild polio remains endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
