Philadelphia resident Latanya Byrd's 27-year-old niece Samara Banks and three of Banks' sons were struck and killed by a speeding driver in 2013. They were crossing Roosevelt Boulevard, a 12-lane road that passes through some of the city's most diverse and lowest-income neighborhoods. "It was just so devastating," Byrd told ABC News. "We lost two generations in one swoop. I mean, just an instant snap of the finger." As the local population has swelled, Byrd said outdated transportation infrastructure -- grass paths instead of pavements, dangerously short pedestrian signal cycles, overcrowded bus stops, to name a few -- can partially explain why

Comments:

They are blaming ''disparities to systemic underinvestment...blah, blah, blah, racial inequity in the medical service chain''. Yet the first paragraph describes a reckless driver and other info denotes poorly maintained (heavily Democrat) neighborhoods.

And to think that for all these years I'd assumed that crashes were caused by driver errors!

Obviously cars are white supremacists. Time to ban them (although if gas goes much higher they may ban themselves).

The 12-lane "[Theodore] Roosevelt Boulevard" mentioned in the story is indeed antiquated, built in Philly when Model T's were all the rage. Impossible to cross by foot without breaking one's legs, or worse.

It seems like they left out a very important statistic in all this: The races of the drivers hitting these minority pedestrians and cyclists. If you are in a majority-black area, the odds are that many of the drivers in that area will also be black. Same for Hispanic areas with Hispanic drivers. No, they want to leave the perspective that it is a bunch of "white supremists" drivers are intentionally cruising around looking for poor innocent pedestrians to run down like some sick video game!!!

I can’t find any statistics on racial disparities in “look both ways”. But drug, alcohol, and reckless driving stats for the black population are significantly higher than the average… and there is a surprisingly high percentage of black drivers in predominantly black neighborhoods. Who would have guessed? Well, let’s just blame those wily white supremacists. That will fix this problem.

"As the local population has swelled." Gee, you think that's what we call "a clue"? And what do grass paths have to do with anything? If people are driving on the grass, maybe that's another clue.

Salt Lake City is nearly 98% white but you're taking your life into your hands if you try to cross IN A CROSSWALK on a green light at a busy intersection during "going home" time even if the road is merely 4 lanes. I know. It took me 20 minutes and a harrowing pause at the center divider. It's not "race," it's not caring about anyone but yourself.

So alcohol had no effect on the accident? Are no seatbelts being worn? Ohhhhh a speeding driver was the problem, was it. It is obviously a problem with the gas pedal on the defective lowest income vehicle that can't afford to fix itself.

Certain groups of people think laws don't apply to them....whether they are driving or walking or cycling. No stops...crazy multiple lane crossings...speeding....never crossing at the corner instead wherever they want regardless of traffic patterns. There are consequences to lawlessness wherever it is applied.

During a campaign event at a high school in Des Moines, Iowa, retired Navy Vice Admiral Michael Franken, the Iowa Democrat taking on longtime Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, said that he wanted to "change" the state to have more "progressive thought" than California. "Like Iowa used to be," Franken said. "We would swing at ideas well before states like California." "We were the generators of good ideas," the Iowa Democrat added. However, Franken’s goal to surpass the Golden State in liberalness may not be the golden messaging he’s looking for as inflation rises nationwide, but especially in California. The U.S.'s

President Joe Biden on Tuesday blamed Republicans and the Russian invasion of Ukraine for soaring US inflation, in a bid to deflect voter anger over his inability to keep prices down. Speaking to trade unions in Philadelphia on the eve of the Federal Reserve's likely decision to raise interest rates again, Biden said inflation is "sapping the strength of a lot of families." Caterpillar Inc. said Tuesday it will move its global headquarters from Illinois to an existing divisional office in Irving, Texas, in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, in another blow to the Chicago area, which last month lost the Boeing Co. headquarters. The move is “in the best strategic interest of the company,” Chief Executive Jim Umpleby said in a statement. The heavy-machinery maker has had a presence in Texas since the 1960s, it said. Even with the move, Illinois has the largest concentration of Caterpillar employees anywhere in the world, the company said. The headquarters was historically in downstate Peoria, Ill.

The Washington state Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a person’s race, and law enforcement’s long history of discrimination against people of color, should be taken into account when determining the legality of police seizures. The court also clarified state law to say police have seized a person if an objective observer would conclude that the person was not free to leave or refuse a request. But, the court wrote, that “objective observer” must be aware that discrimination and biases “have resulted in disproportionate police contacts, investigative seizures, and uses of force against Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.”
