I don't know what else you'd call this -- Pope Francis naming the Church's strongest and most outspoken progressive, San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy a Cardinal -- other than a war on conservative Catholics, with whom the Holy Father already takes a very dim view.
Here's the news:
Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego, one of Pope Francis' ideological allies who has often sparred with more conservative U.S. bishops, was named by the pope on Sunday as one of 21 new cardinals.
The San Diego diocese said McElroy will be installed by Pope Francis on August 27 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Winning a cardinal's hat doesn't outrank the archbishop's mitre,

The communist garbed in the robes of the Pope strikes again at the heart of goodness. What a mess. His successor will be no better and probably worse.

Is there any wonder as to why Catholics have left the Church, never to come back?

The Woke Pope. Sounds like a Dr. Suess book. The Cat in the Hat would have some fun with that.
The last I heard of McElroy, he was publicly defending Biden's pro-abortion stance while being Catholic, just before the 2020 election.

My heart is breaking over what this man is doing to the RC Church. As a lifelong faithful Catholic, I feel that all that I've lived and loved is in peril. I've always been able to find refuge and comfort in my beliefs, no matter what else swirled around in the world. But now, I there is evil afoot in the Vatican, so much worse than seems believable.
This PINO is not fit to lead. I will continue to stay on my path, but it's becoming impossible to feel connected to the hierarchy as moral leaders.

The conservative way of life is under attack everywhere: in schools, in media, in government, in our churches, both Protestant and Catholic, and even in our own families! It is an unstoppable juggernaut until we have no choice but to commit extreme violence in defense for our very survival.

Your selective wonder, #2, ignores the decline shared by non-Catholic Christians who have left their own churches over the same timeframe that the agnosticism/atheism/apathy of the "Nones" has increased.
But we have the hope that although Peter denied Christ three times and the Prodigal betrayed his father, they will come home.

If you look closely, it is easy to see that Biden and the Pope are following the same “open borders” partisan political and socialist agenda when it comes to flooding the USA and other developed Western countries with unlimited masses of poor and uneducated so-called irregular migrants of third world origin. Who under the immigration laws of the USA and other Western developed countries that Biden and the Pope are ignoring, are almost all illegal aliens who are entering the USA and other Western developed countries unlawfully.

I always thought that Pope Benedict who was elected Pope got to the Vatican, and saw what a mess the College of Cardinals was in. He saw no way he could get rid of the pedo's and he retired and the Pedo's elected Francis.
I might go to hell for saying that, but it is what I think.
Is it so strange that Francis Make Elroy a Cardinal. Do not birds of a feather.
Then I see Cardinal Gregory in Washington's Archdiocese and read of his past.

FTA: If things get really bad, they can withhold money from church collections, given that the main reason American Catholics are overrepresented in the Vatican hierarchy seems to be that they donate the most money.
The secular Archbishops installed Francis with the express purpose of diminishing conservatives. They would chuck Francis in a second if the $$$ dry up. Of course, they would go for another liberal secularist as a replacement unless they are stopped.

Given the appetites of Francis the Asshat, I imagine McElroy is more in the style and mannerisms of Theodore McCarrick, always looking for the next vulnerable little boy to have his way with.

Anyone who is a part of any organized religious organization knows that their leaders are subject to decisions that are an anathema to their doctrine. It is because while they may be vaunted leaders they are ultimately sinners just like everyone else. They made bad decisions, embrace bad theology, and become too closely aligned with the politics of this world and fall prey to allowing their focus to stray from its intended purpose. When this happens, it undermines their entire ministry.
The Pope is a very powerful individual and his words hold enormous power and it greatly behooves him to make decisions and pronouncements that fall in in line with Scripture and not with the political ideology he embraces. When he comes out with these pronouncements, it undermines his authority with people who actually understand what the Word of God says and means. Sadly, the Pope appears to be going in the wrong direction. An authentic man of God is essential at a time like this. I pray that God will deal with him in His time and His manner.

#15, Pope Benedict did not “retire”. He was removed. He was far too conservative for the New World Order types, 0bama among them, and they forced him out.
As a Catholic I had hoped that, being from Western Europe, he would do for that area what Pope John Paul II did for Eastern Europe. In most of Western Europe for the last couple of decades, Catholic Churches have been not much more than interesting museums, filled with tourists rather than congregations. But the globalists couldn’t allow that to happen.

There have been a number of 2nd rate popes, Francis is just one. His great error is appeasement with the left to further his social “justice” agenda. Unfortunately it is a deal with the devil in this case the abortion devil. Keep in mind this has nothing to do with Church doctrine, it’s religious/political politics. Bad popes generally make bad political decisions, something all popes, being human beings, have to face. They are not and never have been politically infallible to the detriment of the Church throughout the ages.

I come from a Lutheran (Missouri synod) upbringing and at the time, I did not understand all of the theologies that were being pushed at the time. But one thing I remember is that Lutheran pastors were required to remain celibate before marriage. And gay pastors were not to engage in sexual practices even in a committed relationship. Riiiiight.
As for verbal attacks on conversative membership, I didn't see any pastors do this, but today, cliques of lefty members tend to get a little mouthy and are frankly supportive of the cancel culture. And I would love to be a fly on the wall to understand which pastors are supportive as well. Membership in the church has declined markedly and has probably decreased by at least 25 percent over the last ten years or so. At this rate, the Lutheran Church (all synods) will eventually cease to exist. We don't attend church anymore. But we visit with God on our own time now at home.

The Catholic church is not doomed.
It has been the goal of Pope Frankie to bring the Catholic Church into the new world. Determined to run with the German cardinals in changing the Church. They railroaded Pope Benedict. Put him away. The goal of this Pope and his cohorts is to change the teachings of the Church, mostly gay, women priests, Communion for politicians. He stripped an American Cardinal (he's not listed on Wiki. He is from the St. Louis area.) of his appointments. Stuck him off in lala land. (This Cardinal is from the St. Louis MO area.) He's now going to go after Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, His appointment of McElroy is a gotcha moment for the Archbishop. Although I think he had it in works for a long time. Archbishop Cordileone knew "the consequences" of his letter to Pelousey. (It's been apparent since Pope Frankie's election that he does not care about the American Catholic church, laity or clerics) He likes the Germans. Research that one. Please pray and pray for Archbishop Cordileone.

Politics and the Catholic Church should not be intertwined, but they have been since the beginning. Its the feature of our fallen world, not a bug. The Pharisees were political animals and their religious fiefdom was threatened by Jesus of Nazareth, so when their religious sanctions failed they set up political trials with Herod and finally Pontius Pilate. Christ was betrayed by Judas and denied by Peter, as the rest of the Apostles gave into their fear and hid themselves. John was the only one of twelve that stood at the foot of the Cross. Just one, along with his Blessed Mother and Mary Magdalene. These three figures represent the types of souls that remain faithful; John the pure priest, Magdalen the pure penitent, and the Mother of God - pure innocence.
Twenty-first century Catholics are no different than any other generation of Catholics that faced deceitful priests and corrupt popes. It is because of the laity that the Faith has survived for 2,000 years despite the machinations of Satan and his minions installed in the hierarchy. Christ, being God, knew of the corruption to come and promised that the Gates of Hell would not prevail - He did not promise that Hell would not infiltrate.
Judas despaired of his actions and committed suicide; Peter despaired of his actions but stayed with his fellow Apostles and became the first Pope - leader of the Christians. Saul held the coats of those that stoned Stephen, the first martyr, yet became the Apostle to the Gentiles. The Church has a 2,000 year history full of deceit and also full of great witnesses and martyrs. In each age Christians are tested and I find it the height of hubris that modern Christians (both Catholic and Protestant) make their religious affiliation dependent upon the politics of the age.
The Catholic (and Orthodox) Church is the only place to be found the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. I will never abandon Christ in the Eucharist just because fallible men have fallen to Satan.
