Fayetteville, Ark.—Walmart will remove its ice cream, commemorating Juneteenth amid growing backlash. Photos of the product recently surfaced on social media. "Share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope," the label read.
The ice cream consisted of a swirl of red velvet and cheesecake flavors. "Juneteenth holiday marks a celebration of freedom and independence," the company said in a statement to FOX Television Stations. "However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate." Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers

So what was the feedback? That the event should be viewed as solemn and not trivialized with special ice cream? Because if that's the case, then the same applies to Memorial Day. Why we have mattress sales, summer clothes and beach accessories on sale in "honor" of those who died fighting for their country?

So... who's offended? Blacks thinking it's not "honoring" enough for that so-called "holiday"? Or others, who don't want that date to be celebrated?
Who's the aggrieved party here?

The first thing that popped into my head when I read the article was "What flavor would that be?" And I must admit I would be happy to share those recipes, but I don't want to denigrate this great site with bad puns, and even worse generalizations of the behavior of others.

The story does not mention what objections were logged, or by whom.
I have no objection to Walmart, or anyone, turning a buck with their ice cream. As #1 says, it would not be in my shopping cart. Why? Because I don't support either "cause" and find "Juneteenth" to be a celebration of division and hatred in the guise of a holiday, which is not about sharing and celebrating African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope when George Floyd and others like him are Community "heroes". No other ethnic or racial group seems to get ice cream carton recognition from Walmart...or, did I miss them?
(The idea of "Pride" ice cream is just repugnant.)

So, who is offended and why?
Maybe customers thought it was licorice ice cream. Hmmm.
I might have tried licorice if it wasn't woked.

Jeez, try and do something nice.....the ice cream sounds very good. I will lay odds that most black people aren't a bit offended. The ones who are, are the Nikole Hannah-Jones and Ibram X Kendis, along with their guilty white allies.

So I guess it doesn’t matter anymore who is offended or why. Corporations will instantly capitulate and apologize. Walmart in general offends me. I demand that they go out of business. Will they?

First Nation in the world to declare a National Holiday because of "Slow Mail Delivery".
When I lived near Galveston it was a local Holiday for Local People...mainly as a collective "Family Reunion" date observed by a particular ethnic subset. held either at Crystal Beach or Stewert Beach. It as popular with Black Families because it didn't conflict with the overly crowed July 4, Memorial Day beach activities...easier to get beach sites all closer together. Everyone else just knew it as Black Beach weekend, conspicuously more black people than usual. If it was too crowded(rarely) there were other beaches nearby that were easily accessed. Until the advent of "Colors" the movie, bloods/crips and rap music it was a peaceful family sort of thing, with BBQ's, football, frisbee, and yes...some brought their horses. Busy weekend for the Lifeguards, more rescues. There are certainly more 'deserving' dates in american history, much more significant as far as emancipation/black history.

Maybe the offense was the expectation that they had to PAY FOR the ice cream.

It took some time but I found an article that highlighted all the gripes. It's apparently 'cultural appropriation' and a flavor that is similar to one sold by a black-owned ice cream company. Some also complained that the packaging showing musical notes and a high-five gestures are 'stereotypes'.

My thought, reading the article, then comments #14 and #21, was that
Maybe the Gripe was that it was NOT a Fried Chicken and Watermelon Swirl!
Thanks to #34 for supplying the missing information.

The product is free with food stamps, so what's the problem? Notice in the image that Walmart also has Gay Pride ice cream. Do they know their market?
