Prairie City, Iowa—Iowa is the first state in the nation to require most gas stations to sell fuel with at least 15% ethanol under a bill signed Tuesday by Gov. Kim Reynolds. Reynolds signed the bill on a farm near Prairie City, about 20 miles east of Des Moines. The Republican governor signed the bill on a flatbed wagon backed by tractors and corn planters, highlighting what she called a victory for Iowa farmers and biofuels advocates. The ethanol industry consumes about half of Iowa's corn crop, and the state leads the nation in corn and ethanol production.

When worldwide food is growing short mandating converting food stuff into fuel is extremely immoral.

Let’s burn our food for fuel! No problems possible in the future? Oh no! We can’t feed our livestock!!! Who knew?

Engine problems and looming food shortages. Turn food into fuel. Seems like a great plan

The world goes hungry, and we ruin our car and motorcycle engines with alcohol which costs more to grow and distill than gasoline.

Is corn used for ethanol even edible? Can a farmer growing ethanol type corn just start planting food corn?

Having done more than a little home brewing, I can reply to previous poster that anything than contains sugar or starch can be made to produce alcohol. The starches - as in corn - first have to be converted to sugars before it can be made into alcohol. This requires heat, water, and enzymes or strong acids. Then it's fermented into alcohol using yeast, and has to be distilled to separate the 10-12% alcohol from the water, which requires still more energy. I suspect that the net energy return from a bushel of corn is therefore very low, possibly even negative, especially considering the energy also required to plant, fertilize, and harvest the corn.

Our vehicle's owner's manual specifically warns against using 15% ethanol.

Automobile manufacturers will be busy voiding engine warranties if more than 10% of this wasteful fuel adulterant (attracts water and has 66% the energy content of pure gasoline) is used. IIRC, my only notable objection to anything PDJT did while in office was my disagreement with his endorsement of ethanol. The MAGA King was wrong about that one. The Renewable Fuel Standard, signed into law by GWB, was an error in policy. America is not lacking for petroleum products, only lacking in the will to seek energy policies that make sense. In moderation, ethanol is for drinking. It has no place in a car's fuel tank..

Let me warn everyone here that keeping that Ethanol mix crapola in your lawnmower, or other such engine, will clog the carburetor and make it impossible to keep running or even start in some cases. One symptom of this is when it starts up OK then stops after 10 seconds, "rinse and repeat," same results. After I disassembled the carb and inspected, I found slimy junk in the float bowl and up in the jet was a wad of this same crud. After a thorough cleaning it ran fine again.
What you can do to avoid this -
1) find a fuel station that sells 0% Ethanol regular gas (good luck finding it),
2) install a fuel valve between the fuel tank and the carb to close so you can run out ALL fuel in the line and the carb before storing the mower,
3) go to Home Depot or Lowe's and purchase the 2-Cycle Fuel containing NO Ethanol, which comes in gallons and quarts, and use that fuel ONLY for your motors.

The only people who like ethanol in gas are the corn farmers and the folks who own the ethanol plants. Everyone else is getting screwed.

That really wears out small engines on things like mowers, leaf blowers, and weed whackers. And at a time when the world is facing food shortages, do we really need to burn food in our cars?

I pay $.80-.90 more per gallon, but I have a station 2 miles from my house that sells 90 octane real gas. Use only that in my small motors and alternate fill-ups in my cars.

Makes one wonder if the politicians ever talked to the engineers before voting on such silly legislation.

They should be compelled to use at least 50% ethanol and enjoy the engine damage and smog and reduced fuel economy, in exchange for foisting this horrible fuel substitute on the nation (no thanks to Green George or Donald Trump, either).
