The Center, New York City’s LGBTQ community center, is celebrating the life and legacy of Keith Haring by renaming a wing after the beloved late artist. On Wednesday, on what would’ve been Haring’s 64th birthday, The Center announced a new name for its annex building: the Keith Haring Community Wing. The Reading, Pa.-born pop artist, whose drawings went from the graffiti subculture of downtown New York to the walls of some of the world’s most prestigious museums, died of AIDS-related complications in February 1990 at the age of 31. During his short-lived career, Haring used his unmistakable images of colorful, almost child-like images as a powerful tool

A brawler in a hooded sweatshirt knocked an elderly man to the ground, threw liquid at him and then kicked him in the face in a broad-daylight Bronx attack, police said Tuesday. Cops believe the 77-year-old victim and his attacker knew each other before Monday afternoon’s violent episode. Video shows the two men arguing on Grand Concourse at E. Clarke Place in Mount Eden at about 1:30 p.m. The attacker, who’s holding a cup in one hand, uses the other to punch the victim in his face, sending him sprawling onto a patch of grass. The victim tried to shield himself with his cane,

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paid for location data harvested from millions of cell phones to track compliance with COVID-19 lockdown measures, according to a new report. The CDC paid $420,000 for a year of access to the cell phone location data from the data brokerage SafeGraph, according to documents reported by Vice News on Tuesday. The data was aggregated, meaning that it was intended to show general trends rather than the movements of specific phones, however the move still set off alarm bells with some privacy advocates.(Snip)According to Vice, the documents show that the CDC planned to use the data to analyze compliance

Amazon will reimburse its staff in the US up to $4,000 in travel expenses annually for a range of non-life threatening medical treatments, including elective abortions, as conservative-led laws look to block access in many states. The online retail giant's decision comes after a leaked memo on Monday revealed that the U.S. Supreme Court could be poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide. In a message sent to Amazon employees on Monday, obtained by Reuters, Amazon told its employees that the new work benefit would apply to an employee if an operation could not be done within 100 miles of their home

President Biden on Monday said his sweeping plan to forgive student loan debt is still under development. Speaking at a White House awards ceremony for federal workers, Mr. Biden was asked whether he has finished his proposal to wipe up massive amounts of student debt for borrowers. “Not yet,” he responded. Mr. Biden is said to be mulling the forgiveness of a minimum of $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower through an executive order. The plan represents a massive shift from his earlier more cautious approach he has taken since entering the White House. It also represents a thorny path for the administration as fears mount that a broad

Rep. Ilhan Omar is demanding the Supreme Court add more justices to override its conservative majority while other Democrats are renewing their calls to nix the filibuster and codify the right to an abortion after a leaked preliminary opinion revealed the court is looking to overturn Roe v. Wade. 'Overturning Roe would put the lives of women across the country at risk. It would fly in the face of decades of precedent and the overwhelming majority of public opinion. And they will not stop here. Expand the court,' the Minnesota Democrat said on Twitter. 'Congress must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade as the law of the land

New York—Broadway theaters are ending the policy of requiring customers to show proof of vaccination. The Broadway League says in a statement that beginning Sunday, the owners and operators of all 41 Broadway theaters are extending the mask requirement at least through the end of May but many will no longer check for vaccination status. The announcement doesn’t specify which theaters are ending the practice. Several shows including “Macbeth,” “Plaza Suite” and “The Music Man” have canceled performances this year after cast members tested positive for COVID-19. In early March, New York Mayor Eric Adams made masks optional in schools and said restaurants, theaters and gyms were no longer

Portland Public Schools plans to provide free menstrual products in both the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms as districts move to comply with an Oregon state law for “menstruating students.” “Starting next year (2022-23), products will be available in all restrooms (male, female, and all-gender) in every PPS building where education occurs,” said the April 19 memo titled “Update on PPS Implementation of Menstrual Dignity Act.” Last year, Democratic Gov. Kate Brown signed HR 3294, which requires K-12 public schools and universities to stock bathrooms with tampons and sanitary pads at no cost to students to give them the “opportunity for safe, dignified self-care.”

Translation, as with restaurants, they weren't making any money playing before empty houses, and they could only cancel so many shows on the pretext of the cast "testing positive." That's how Science works.
