Diesel fuel prices hit a record $5.37 a gallon on average nationally Monday and rose above an average of $6 in several Northeastern states and California, analysts reported. The cost increase results as countries stockpile diesel and other fuels out of fear that Russia will cut off natural gas supplies to more European neighbors. The cost of a gallon of diesel fuel in the U.S. rose 12 cents a gallon since $5.25 a Saturday alone. It was up 29 cents in a week, AAA's Fuel Gauge Report shows. Before the current price rise, the previous record was $5.13 a gallon

ROME—Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Pope Francis has floated the idea that he wants to take a trip to Kyiv to try to broker a ceasefire. But now he says he would prefer to go to Moscow to try to talk some sense into Vladimir Putin, who he has not outwardly condemned in the now nearly 3-month-old war and only did so lightly in a lengthy interview with an Italian newspaper. “I feel that before going to Kyiv I must go to Moscow,” he told Corriere Della Sera in an interview that ran on Tuesday. But the

CHICAGO — Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Monday that she was “not happy” about violence that again touched downtown Chicago over the weekend and ended with a cancellation of Sunday night’s performance of the play "Moulin Rouge." “We’re working our tails off every single day. Obviously not happy about this weekend,” Lightfoot told reporters at an unrelated news conference. “Particularly distressing is, again, the number of young people that seemingly are involved in acts of violence. It’s clearly not acceptable and that’s why we’ve got to keep doing the things that we know are working.” The violence follows a period of

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Roughly 100 workers at the Amazon warehouse in Shakopee walked off the job Friday night in protest of low wages and lack of time off for Eid, an upcoming Muslim holiday. In a statement, the workers said that they rallied outside the warehouse and delivered a letter of demand to the company, requesting that the internet retail giant bring back the $3 an hour pay bump for all shifts and unlimited volunteer time off so that people can see their families on events such as Eid, which begins Sunday. The workers were joined by members of The Awood

House Republicans might not have to wait until November to chip away at Democrats’ majority. Internal party polling conducted this month shows the GOP has a real shot at flipping former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela’s South Texas seat in the upcoming June special election. Republican Mayra Flores led Democrat Dan Sanchez by 5 points in a late April survey — and President Joe Biden’s job approval was underwater by 14 points in a district he carried by 4 points in 2020. A win in this once-deep blue seat would offer a big morale boost to Republicans, who have been making

All Hillary Schubach wanted to do is something good for the environment. But after switching to driving a plug-in electric sedan, she quickly realized a new complication of apartment living: Access to a charging station. Schubach’s hardly alone. Even as it appears electric car sales are hitting a tipping point, those living in apartments and condominiums around the nation can find it difficult, expensive or outright impossible to find a way to plug in when they’re at home. With nearly one out of three households living in apartments or condominiums, the goal of switching to electric vehicles to fight climate

In March 2020, President Biden swept through Massachusetts’ Democratic primary with a come-from-behind Super Tuesday victory. He later topped Donald Trump by 33 ½ percentage points here, his second-largest margin of victory in November. Few places lean more Democratic than Massachusetts, according to political forecasters. But even in this deep blue stronghold, Biden has fallen hard. Just 46 percent of registered Massachusetts voters say they approve of the job Biden is doing as president, with about the same proportion giving him a thumbs down, according to a new Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll. Of the 765 registered voters surveyed, just two

Employees of the tech giant Apple are revolting against a plan to get staff back into the office for three days a week, claiming it will make the company “younger, whiter and more male-dominated”. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has said his proposed “hybrid working pilot” for US, Europe and UK employees is an attempt to balance the corporate benefits of in-office working with the personal advantages that working from home gives staff members. A group of US-based Apple employees have formed an organisation dubbed “Apple Together” and claim the initiative is “only driven by fear”. The unnamed staff have sent

An innovative face mask for cows, designed to reduce methane emissions and slow down climate change, has won a prestigious design award. The wearable device for cattle, created by UK-based design group Zelp, was one of the four winners of the inaugural Terra Cart Design Lab competition. Prince Charles, who launched the competition as part of his Sustainable Markets Initiative, hailed the ground-breaking design as "fascinating" at an awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, The Telegraph reported. The design, a smart harness for cows, converts methane into carbon dioxide and water vapor. Cows expel significant quantities of methane, an odorless

An Alabama corrections officer and a capital murder suspect are missing, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton. Vicki White, assistant director of corrections for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office, and inmate Casey Cole White, who are not related, left the detention center at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, bound for the courthouse, and they have not been seen since, said Sheriff Rick Singleton. Singleton said Vicki White, a 25-year employee of the sheriff's office, told subordinates she was taking Casey White for a mental health evaluation, and afterward would be seeking medical attention herself. He said investigators have since

President Joe Biden has been letting loose in private conversations in recent weeks, railing about the factors bogging down his approval ratings and the people he thinks aren’t helping – including Democrats eyeing his job despite his clear promise to run for reelection. He’s gearing up for intense midterm campaigning built around hammering Republicans, as he tries to save Democrats in the House and Senate, but also to tee up a reelection campaign that for now is expected to be announced by next spring. Biden is frustrated that journalists aren’t calling out Republicans for, as he sees it, giving up

WASHINGTON — Citing growing worries about high gasoline prices, Democratic leaders announced an effort Thursday to give the Federal Trade Commission increased authority to crack down on companies that engage in price gouging. In doing so, they downplayed the possibility of other options such as a federal gas tax holiday or offering oil companies more government incentives to increase production. Instead, they said the FTC needs more tools, including stiffer fines and penalties and a team of dedicated experts to monitor markets and go after price gouging. With voters concerned about the growing toll of inflation, Democrats again signaled their intention
