A powerful explosion has killed more than 50 worshippers after Friday prayers at a Kabul mosque, the latest of a series of attacks on civilian targets in Afghanistan during Ramadan. The blast hit the Khalifa Sahib mosque in the west of the capital in the early afternoon, according to Besmullah Habib, the deputy spokesperson for the interior ministry. The attack came as worshippers at the Sunni mosque gathered after Friday prayers for a congregation known as Zikr–an act of remembrance practised by some Muslims but seen as heretical by several Sunni groups. Sayed Fazil Agha, the head of the mosque, said someone they believed was a suicide bomber joined

President Biden will show up for part of the White House Correspondents Association dinner late Saturday but won’t attend the meal portion of the event, and will probably wear a mask during most of the comedy roast and presentation of scholarships. It is a glaring example of the tradeoffs Mr. Biden faces in stiff-arming a virus that is infecting top aides at a rapid clip while practicing what he preaches in urging Americans to trust vaccines and treatments, evaluate their own risks and enjoy a sense of normalcy.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said she expects the president to wear a mask when he’s not speaking,

A Bronx man has been freed on a misdemeanor charge despite allegedly being filmed beating a 53 year-old man while wearing knuckle-dusters after his friend's poor driving saw them crash their Lexus into the victim's car. Miquiel Guerrero, 23, was arrested on March 30 after he and five others surrounded the unidentified victim, 53, and his car after they crashed into each other on Exterior Street in the Grand Concourse neighborhood. A man cops say is Guerrero was then filmed brutally-attacking his victim while wearing knuckle-dusters while his posse jumped on the man's car and stole it. The van driver made no attempt to fight back.

Many states are taking steps to make financial literacy an increased part of children’s education. Florida became the 11th state to require a financial skills course as a high school graduation requirement last month, joining Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia, according to Fox Business. More states are beginning to address the issue—37 states and Washington, D.C., have discussed bills about financial literacy in 2022, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Of those, 20 are based on developing programs in high schools. Approval ratings for the new measures are high, as 88% of adults surveyed by the National Endowment

While praying the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic are behind us, global health officials warn to be vigilant about other potential outbreaks—this time, measles. Cases of the disease spiked 79% during the first two months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, according to a joint statement issued by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Experts fear that all the time spent indoors during the pandemic—and people who aren’t vaccinated against measles—poses risks for the youngest among us, creating a “perfect storm” for outbreaks.(Snip)The new surge comes as world health agencies are also investigating mysterious clusters of pediatric liver disease, or hepatitis

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued rules that will prohibit menthol-flavored cigarettes and any flavor other than tobacco in cigars. The administration said the ban was necessary because the minty flavor of menthol ameliorates the harsh edge of tobacco and appeals to young people. “The proposed rules would help prevent children from becoming the next generation of smokers and help adult smokers quit,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said. “Additionally, the proposed rules represent an important step to advance health equity by significantly reducing tobacco-related health disparities.”(Snip)The FDA said it is acting within its authority and building on actions in 2009

President Joe Biden on Thursday asked Congress for an additional $33 billion in military and humanitarian assistance for the Ukraine, which officials say could fund the war there for the next five months. He said the previous money allocated for the Ukrainians has been spent. 'Basically we're out of money,' he said in remarks at the White House. The money includes $20.4 billion in additional security and military assistance, $8.5 billion in economic assistance, and $3 billion in humanitarian assistance.(Snip)The $33 billion request is more than double the $13 billion that Biden asked for last month and lawmakers approved. Moderna has applied for authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use its COVID-19 vaccines in children as young as six months old, the company announced Thursday. It comes as part of a larger move by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company to finally get its shots authorized for people under 18 in America—putting it on par with its main competition in the rollout of the shots, Pfizer. Some experts doubt that the shots are needed at all in children, though, especially for those as young as six months old who face little individual risk from the virus.(Snip)'There is an important unmet medical need here

Boeing unveiled $2.7 billion in charges and added costs across its aircraft portfolio on Wednesday, and expressed doubts over hitting jet delivery targets as technical problems, inflation and supplier risks cloud its path toward recovery. Shares of the US planemaker fell to a nearly 1-1/2 year low after it posted a quarterly loss and announced it was halting 777X production through 2023 due to a fresh delay in its entry into service after certification problems and weak demand. “Another dreadful set of results,” Agency Partners analyst Nick Cunningham said in a client note, adding that a “general sense of disarray continues.”

Maryan Zablotskyy, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, is reaching out to the Second Amendment advocates in the U.S. to figure out how to convince his government to loosen Ukraine‘s stringent gun laws.
Months before the Russian invasion, Mr. Zablotskyy took on his country’s civilian gun-control system that was inherited from the former Soviet Union when he introduced a bill to allow private ownership of firearms. “I tried to convince parliament.(Snip)Unfortunately, that bill has failed. And, largely, of course, due to the Russian lobby,” he told The Washington Times. “Now we, of course, understand why. I think that now there’s overwhelming support for the right of Ukrainians

President Biden next week will visit a Javelin anti-tank missile factory in Alabama, the White House announced Wednesday, the source of a weapon that is playing a key role in Ukraine’s defense against a two-month-old Russian invasion. Mr. Biden will visit the Lockheed Martin facility amid concerns that the U.S. is depleting its supply of long-range, guided Javelin missiles as it continues to ship the weapons to Kyiv to fend off Russian tanks. The White House did not offer any further details about the trip. The visit comes as lawmakers raise concerns about the U.S.’s Javelin missile supply, which has dropped 33% since the Ukraine
