AUGUSTA, Ga. – Scottie Scheffler has lived up to the hype at Augusta National.
The world's top-ranked player captured his first major championship with a three-stroke victory at the Masters.
Scheffler came into the day with a three-shot lead, and he made sure it held up by closing with a 1-under 71. He finished at 10-under 278 overall, winning for the fourth time in his last six tournaments.
Scheffler four-putted for a double-bogey at the final hole, but he had such a comfortable lead it didn't matter.
Rory McIlroy was the runner-up after shooting 64, but he came into the day 10 strokes behind and was never a serious challenger to Scheffler.

The 2022 Masters was as enjoyable a tournament to watch as I have seen in a long time. Scottie Scheffler was on the 2021 Ryder Cup team as a 24-year-old rookie and played well in the USA's 18-9 victory over the European team. But that was only an inkling of what he was about to do: four wins in seven starts, including the Masters, and #1 in the world. The low pitch shot he hit from down below the third green was astonishing. That shot turned the momentum, and Cameron Smith's triple bogey on the short par 3 #12 after his birdie on #11 to draw within one stroke took Scottie's only real challenger out of contention.
Rory McIlroy, needing only the Masters title to achieve the career Slam of all four majors, finished with an 8-under 64 to nail down second place. The bunker shot he holed out on #18 was a thing of exquisite beauty. Seeing American Colin Morikawa (another rookie Ryder Cup player already with two majors to his credit) follow Rory's perfect bunker shot with one of his own from the same bunker just confirmed for the thousandth time why this tournament is the best one of all. I should know. I've been there several times. There's nothing like it in all sports. It's Bobby Jones's enduring gift to golf. I'm already waiting for the '23 Masters.

Nice win and Scottie kept his poise and minimized his problems with his few wayward drives. He made a bogey on 18 Saturday after an awful tee shot into the woods. Then after Smith makes birdie on 11 today and looks like he is on a roll to overtake Scheffler, I told my wife “you can’t win it on 12 but you can lose it”. He did exactly that making triple after putting his tee shot into Rae’s Creek. Great tournament as always. All those guys are amazing players.

Scheffler is a great player to watch. I expected a few players to challenge him more today. but it never really materialized. Scottie should enjoy wearing the green jacket for the next year.

Scheffler shot four rounds under par this week. He has a fantastic short game. That skill takes pressure off the full shots.

Not much I can add to #1's post, Scotty is a gentleman and as always the Masters was one of the best sporting events of the year.

Enjoyed it all. A great champion. Next year it will hopefully be Rory.
Plus, I always wanted to say that I can putt out on 18 like a pro. Now, thanks to Scottie, I can.

Augusta National Golf Club's holes #3 [350 yard par 4] and #12 [150 yard par 3] are two of the greatest short holes in the game of golf. The former is short enough to be almost driven by players like Bryson Dechambeau or Cameron Champ, so players hit everything from a driver down to a 4-iron lay up off the tee. The small putting surface is firm, not quite like marble, and extremely fast, and any approach short or left is gone--almost a certain bogey (as Smith made from next to Scheffler down below the green). However, Scheffler hit a one in a thousand recovery shot that wound up in the jar. As we competitive golfers used to say, "You make your own luck." That's the sort of thing that happens to you when you're going to win.
Hole #12 (Golden Bell) might be the hardest par 3 in the world. Depending on where the hole is cut, it can play anywhere from 135 to 160 yards, just a short iron. Rae's Creek fronts the extremely shallow but wide green, which sits at an angle with the right side farther away than the left side. Three bunkers frame the front and back of the green, with a flower garden at the course's boundary [with adjacent Augusta Country Club]. Recovery shots after dunking one in the creek are difficult. If you're an inch short, you're wet again, and must take another penalty stroke and drop.
In 1980 Tom Weiskopf made a decuple bogey 13. (Decuple is correct: 10 over par on one hole.) Once Tom, doing the broadcast, was asked what Nicklaus, on the way to another green jacket, was asked what Jack was thinking as he played. Tom said, "If I knew that, I wouldn't be in this booth."

Sorry for the second post but LOL #7. I remember one year that Nicklaus was playing horribly. Maybe the nadir of his career and Jack said, “ well, all those hackers said that they wished that they could play like Jack Nicklaus and now they can.” Golf will keep anybody humble.

Great round, great player in SS, but does anyone else miss the elegant, reserved polite clapping post shot that WAS Augusta, in the pre-TW world of golf?
I do.

RE #8: TPC Sawgrass #17. I can't even imagine how many balls are at the bottom of the lake. We should see an island of them poking above the waterline before too much longer!!

While the TV commentators kept commenting on Scheffler's ability to show as if he had no nerves, when it finally came down to the 18th green, and making a one-foot putt to win, he showed that he was as nervous as anyone else by four putting on the final hole.

I was so glad to see McIlroy hang in there for the bucks in 2nd place. Primarily because his was the only name I knew on the leaderboard. I'm getting too old.
