Saudi Arabia on Saturday executed 81 people convicted of crimes ranging from killings to belonging to militant groups — the largest known mass execution carried out in the kingdom in its modern history. The executions carried out surpassed even the toll of a January 1980 mass execution for the 63 militants convicted of seizing the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979, the worst-ever militant attack to target the kingdom and Islam's holiest site. It wasn't clear why the kingdom choose Saturday for the executions, though they came as much of the world's attention remained focused on Russia's war on Ukraine. The

The co-hosts of ABC's liberal daytime talk show "The View" complained Friday the criticism leveled against Vice President Kamala Harris over her performance while in Europe has been rated in racism and misogyny. (Snip) After a reporter asked a question about Ukrainian refugees, Harris and Duda appeared confused about who would answer the question, leading to Harris laughing while saying, "A friend in need is a friend indeed." Duda then offered to respond first and began speaking. Harris was ripped by critics following the exchange, accusing her of looking to Duda for help answering the question and slamming her for

PORTLAND, Ore. — Makeshift shelters abut busy roadways, tent cities line sidewalks, tarps cover broken-down cars, and sleeping bags are tucked in storefront doorways. The reality of the homelessness crisis in Oregon's largest city can’t be denied. “I would be an idiot to sit here and tell you that things are better today than they were five years ago with regard to homelessness,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said recently. “People in this city aren’t stupid. They can open their eyes.” As COVID-19 took root in the U.S., people on the street were largely left on their own — with many

Russia widened its military attacks in Ukraine on Friday, striking in some major western locations for the first time amid ongoing peace talks that have failed to produce any meaningful results. The new Russian airstrikes started just before dawn as Moscow's military rained bombs on some locations, Ukraine's Emergency Service said. Two boiler houses were shut in Lutsk, near the Poland border, while significant explosions were reported in the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk. Dnipro, in central Ukraine, also faced Russian rockets. "Dnipro is also under attack," Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office, said on Friday, according

Prince William should be made to apologize for a comment that "dehumanizes the lives of black and brown people," an anti-racism activist has told Newsweek. The Duke of Cambridge was hit by a colonialism backlash during a visit in support of the Ukraine relief effort. Footage from the event showed that the prince said: "Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. The news every day, it's almost unfathomable to actually witness it, to see it. "For our generation, it's very alien to see this in Europe. We're all right behind you." The Press Association originally reported he also suggested

WASHINGTON — Some social media users suggest that soaring fuel prices in the U.S. aren’t the result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, increased consumption or supply chain issues as daily life resumes after two years of stagnation brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the flurry of Facebook and Twitter posts offer, without evidence, that a nefarious scheme is underway: President Joe Biden’s administration is intentionally driving up the price of gas to get more American drivers behind the wheel of an electric car. “$6.00 a gallon gas is how you get people to buy electric cars,” claims one popular

U.S. inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in four decades again last month, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated Thursday, with the recent surge in oil and gas prices linked to Russia's war on Ukraine likely to keep rates elevated well into the second half of the year. The headline consumer price index for the month of February was estimated to have risen 7.9% from last year, up from the 7.5% pace in January and the fastest rate since June of 1982, powered largely by energy, shelter and services costs. On a monthly basis, inflation was up 0.8%

Gustavo Galvéz, owner of Galvéz Auto Clinic, can testify to the new problem Southern California drivers are facing: gas thieves. A few days ago, a landscaper asked him for help with his vehicle, and they discovered a new modus operandi for criminals. "He went to start the car to go to work, and it didn't start," Galvéz said. "Well, he brought it here to see what the problem was and the gas tank had a hole in it." (Snip) Repairing a gas tank is a very expensive job, running as high as $800. That price includes replacing the tank and

A majority of Republicans and independents would stay and fight were Russia to invade the United States while a majority of Democrats say they would flee, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. WASHINGTON — Rising gas prices pose a fresh election year challenge for President Joe Biden. He’s balancing concerns about costs at the pump in the U.S. against calls from both parties to step up penalties on Russian President Vladimir Putin following his invasion of Ukraine. (Snip) Later, while arriving on a visit to Texas, Biden was asked if he had a message for the American people about gas prices and responded, “They’re going to go up.” “Can’t do much right now,” the president added in response to questions. “Russia is responsible.” That’s a message the president may have to reinforce

The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that Iran will threaten Americans — both directly and via proxy attacks — and that Tehran remains committed to developing networks inside the U.S., according to the intelligence community's 2022 Annual Threat Assessment, published Tuesday by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). (Snip) CBS News has obtained two persistent threat assessments submitted to Congress by the State Department in January 2022 which cited a "serious and credible threat" on the lives of former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Trump administration Iran envoy Brian Hook. These non-public assessments show that throughout 2021

Gold futures jumped above $2,000 an ounce on Tuesday, extending its rise toward record-high levels, as the war in Ukraine fueled bids for safe haven assets like bullion. Meanwhile, palladium prices reached an all-time high as the Ukrainian crisis in its second week, prompted a surge higher in the broad commodity complex. April gold rose $69.50, or 3.5%, to $2,065.40 an ounce, following a 1.5% advance on Monday, which has put bullion at around the highest level in about nearly 19 months, hitting a Tuesday peak at $2,070.40. “The rally in gold has been accelerating since the Russia/Ukraine tensions began
