America lost a great patriot and one of its foremost public intellectuals yesterday with the untimely death of Angelo Codevilla at the age of 78. Professor Codevilla, whose career spanned the Navy, the foreign service, the intelligence community, academe, think tanks, the blogosphere, and the literary world, was one of the the sharpest and shrewdest observers of the contemporary political scene -- hardly surprising, since the Italian-born scholar produced a notable 1997 translation of Machiavelli's The Prince. His Country Class vs. Ruling Class piece in The Spectator a few years back was the best, and for me, the first analysis of Them vs. Us that I have ever read. Rush touted it. I don't believe that he used the term "Deep State," but it was a precursor to what we saw during the Trump years. He was a treasure. RIP

A pivotal feature of dictatorial regimes is the institutional lie, expressed as an unfounded message of millennial hope, an ever-changing set of legislated policies, and the tendency of authoritarian leaders to violate their own axioms and edicts. We see this happening before our eyes as a Covid-19 tyranny takes root on our own soil. The manifold inconsistencies and deceptions that circulate regarding the draconian mandates and coercive measures imposed by Big Government to combat the Covid pandemic should by now have alerted the public to their suspicious nature. We have observed the extent to which these ordinances are regularly flouted by the authorities

To the surprise of only the Biden administration and its top brass, the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan last week after 20 years of frivolous American adventurism. It was a spectacular failure of American diplomacy, statecraft, intelligence and, most of all, military capability. In short, mission very much not accomplished. But that’s pretty much standard operating procedure for the nearly useless behemoth called the Pentagon, which hasn’t won a war since the kinder, gentler American government changed its name from the War Department to the Defense Department shortly after World War II. If you’re always on defense, you’re losing.

If President Joe Biden’s no-questions-please press conference on the collapse of the American puppet government in Afghanistan and the end of the American imperium in the Middle East felt like a funeral, that’s because it was. The ignominious defeat after 20 years of fruitless, half-hearted warfare marks the end of the federal geopolitical Leviathan state that emerged during and in the aftermath of World War II. Good riddance to it. It’s fitting that the end should come with Biden [snip] Over the past seven months as chief executive, however, he has ruined the economy, expanded the welfare state, encouraged anarchy, criminalized dissent,

Despite the steady drumbeat from the media, government agencies, Big Pharma and the established medical bureaucracies attesting to the safety and effectiveness of the COVID vaccines, those who remain skeptical of their trustworthiness advance a range of countervailing arguments. The vaccines are really panaceas, essentially unreliable, innocuous or even useless. Favorable trial results are statistically manipulated. The Pfizer math is shifty and the “per protocol” method is frankly disingenuous, constituting a violation of bioethics laws. The vaccines are potentially harmful, yielding dangerous side-effects, aka “adverse reactions,” that are routinely underreported in passive, voluntary sites like VAERS in the U.S. and Yellow Card in the U.K.

One of the many traps into which conservatives routinely fall is thinking that their ideological opponents don’t fully understand the nature and the consequences of the ruinous policies they advocate. Cries of, “don’t they realize that…” and “surely they can see the hypocrisy” fill the air as the well-meaning but utterly naïve Right tries to make sense of the rabid, foaming Left and its dynamic plan for “direct action,” that is, force and violence. How else to explain the events of the past nine months, the astonishingly fast descent of the United States of America from a muscular Republic confident of its history, purpose, and mission

Back in 1943, the British novelist Graham Greene published “The Ministry of Fear,” a thriller set in World War II London involving mercy killings, exploding suitcases, seances, Luftwaffe air raids, outright murder, insane asylums and undercover Nazi spies. It was successfully made into a movie the following year starring Ray Milland as the troubled protagonist, and directed by Fritz Lang, himself a refugee from Hitler. Both novel and film capture the paranoid atmosphere during that troubled time, with danger lurking even in something as innocent as a cake. Whom or what can you trust?

One of the things the Left hates most about the United States of America is that there are 50 of them. A leftist revolution is more easily accomplished in a country in which power is already consolidated in a single place among a small group of people. Despite the vast territory of the Russian empire under the last of the Tsars, Lenin was able to hijack the initial anti-Tsarist revolt and turn it into a Bolshevik seizure of power. [snip] And here we are now: less a federal republic than an imperial capital sucking the life and tax dollars out of 50 non-sovereign satellites

With Donald Trump’s reappearance on the political scene a few days ago at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, the former president has once again emerged as the activists’ choice for the 2024 nomination—if the election were held today. Trump won the votes of 70 percent of the attendees, followed by Florida governor Ron DeSantis at 21 percent; the others, including Ted Cruz, Nikki Haley, and Mike Pompeo, each collected less than one percent of the straw vote. The presidential election, however, isn’t going to be held today or any other day except (nominally) Nov. 5, 2024. At least the Republicans had better hope that’s the case.

ews reports inform us that Covid cases are rising exponentially, particularly in the U.K., which has reportedly enjoyed the most successful vaccine rollout on record thus far, with about 85 percent of the population receiving a first dose and 62 percent receiving two. Yet no connection is made between a massive vaccination program intended to reduce or prevent the spread of infections and the fact that cases are said to be skyrocketing. The vaccines are extravagantly touted as reliable antitoxins; at the same time the disease apparently continues to surf from wave to wave and variant to variant. [snip] Cases are up, fatalities down,

Great commanders understand the importance of choosing their battlefields carefully and, whenever possible, fighting on the most favorable and advantageous terrain. At Gaugamela, the outnumbered Alexander the Great got Darius right where he wanted him, and destroyed the Persian Empire. [snip] As American conservatives—traditional Americans, we should more properly call them—continue to reel from the cultural and political onslaught of the Biden/Harris/Ron Klain/Barack Obama administration, it’s about time we come to realize that we are fighting the wrong enemy on the wrong battlefield, without a proper army.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Thursday that Border Patrol agents will no longer be permitted to use horses to guard the border in Del Rio, Texas, after “horrific” photos emerged of agents swinging long reins while interacting with Haitian migrants. The announcement comes after the media caused a frenzy by falsely portraying the videos and photos as showing agents hitting the migrants with whips. It was later revealed that the agents were in fact wielding the long reins that make it easier to maintain control of their horses, according to Border Control chief Raul Ortiz. An unnamed Border Patrol agent told Townhall’s Julio Rosas that mounted agents

Much of the analysis surrounding Joe Biden’s downfall has centered on national approval ratings. RedState has covered that issue extensively, noting that the president appears to have no support floor. That makes him much more like George W. Bush and less like Donald Trump. But underneath the national discussion lies the environment that truly matters as we head into 2022, and it’s not looking good for Biden and his cohorts. Biden faces dismal job approval ratings in several battleground states, including Michigan, Virginia, and Iowa, where the president garnered the lowest score since George W. Bush in 2008 in a survey this week.

Why has the federal government been trying so hard to keep surveillance footage of January 6th under wraps? We may have an answer to that question if a set of newly released videos are any indication.A judge ordered the videos be released against the wishes of the government prosecutors who claimed doing so would undermine national security. Of course, that makes no sense, and what’s on the videos runs counter to the chosen narrative.Behold, the event that has been compared to the Civil War by the President of the United States. Scientists have created the ultimate GM crop: contraceptive corn. Waiving fields of maize may one day save the world from overpopulation. The pregnancy prevention plants are the handiwork of the San Diego biotechnology company Epicyte, where researchers have discovered a rare class of human antibodies that attack sperm. By isolating the genes that regulate the manufacture of these antibodies, and by putting them in corn plants, the company has created tiny horticultural factories that make contraceptives. 'We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies,' said Epicyte president Mitch Hein.

By an overwhelming majority, the House voted to fund the Israeli Iron Dome today, a defensive system that protects against Palestinian rocket barrages. That vote was necessary as a stand-alone bill because far-left anti-Semites, mostly members of the so-called “squad,” joined forces earlier in the week to strip the funding from the main budget bill. Naturally, those who live to see Israel wiped off the face of the Earth didn’t take it well as scenes of lunacy were presented on the floor. Here’s a taste of that before we get to the weirdest reaction of the day.
