President Biden is calling for an electric vehicle revolution, but a major mining project proposed for remote western Nevada could soon show whether his administration intends to walk the talk.
All the Australian company ioneer Ltd. needs is final Interior Department clearance to start work on the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project after announcing Thursday a joint venture with the international mining firm Sibanye-Stillwater.(Snip)Environmentalists argue that the mine would worsen the “extinction crisis,” citing the Tiehm’s buckwheat, a flowering plant that grows only on a 10-acre stretch of federal land in western Nevada. In June, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed protecting the Tiehm’s buckwheat

Get you a shiny new electric car. And a pack of hot dogs. And a bag of marshmallows. And some sticks.

If the plant can only grow on 10 acres of this entire Earth, maybe it was always doomed for extinction in the first place.
Electric car(t) technology demands the use of lithium for batteries. There is no better technology for the moment. Attempts to store more power using more exotic methods have been underway for more than 100 years now, and lithium is still the best salt they have found. If you want an electric car(t) revolution, you have to use it until something better and more cost effective is invented.
The truth is that battery technology hasn't come as far as many other inventions since energy storage became a thing. Gasoline is a FAR more efficient means of storing energy right now.

No, lets save that lithium for the Chicoms when they take over the US. I don't think the Chicoms care one wit about those "protected" plants.

LOL! Now this is hilarious.
Gotta have lithium for their magical (fraudulent) electric cars. And yet, they fight against getting the lithium.
Freeze in the dark in the same spot, or ride a horse and shovel horse manure off the streets. Which is it, you idiots? Horse exhaust is pretty noxious stuff in quantity.

Biden who knows nothing about physics, chemistry and science, and has been wrong on almost every issue in 50 years demands electric cars.

The greens like lithium that comes from Africa and with black slaves, mostly children, working the minds, brings them back to the democRATs of the old south.

For ten (10) freakin' acres of some stupid plant, they won't mine our big lithium deposits for the electric cars Greens say we must have to save the planet? These people are absolute nut-cases. It looks like a case of NIMBY and have these people practicing job security. First snail darters, now Tiehm's buckwheat. Has anyone ever heard of Tiehm's buckwheat before now? If these yo-yos want to save this weed so badly, dig it up and plant it someplace else where it can get water and sunlight!

OK greenies, we will fence off the 10 acres of buckwheat growth area and protect it forever an ever! Maybe even give it more acreage in a protected area and not mine near it. Would that make you happy? No? Greenies want no mining, nobody allowed to go near where the silly Tiehm's Buckwheat plant grows. If this happened and the plant disappeared on it's own (drought, wildfire, fungus....), nobody would ever know and I'm pretty sure that the Earth would continue rotating, unchanged.

Li ion batteries may be the most effective current technology for powering EVs but the impact on the environment from the mining and processing of lithium and the manufacture of the batteries themselves far outweighs the negative impact engendered by the production of a comparable amount of energy from fossil fuels. Plus expended batteries aren't particularly recyclable which means they wind up in somebody's landfill whether they are supposed to or not. Plus the batteries are renowned for catching on fire which is why the USPS has signs in the post offices warning patrons not not mail the damned things in their devices.

Greenies hate nuclear power also, #10. They somehow think we can power an electric car(t) revolution with solar, wind and unicorn farts.
Gov. Fat Basturd in Illinois just signed a bill that bailed out the 5 nukes here run by Exelon (a company so corrupt it brought down the Speaker of the House here) for the second time. Part of the bill says that Illinois power generation has to be 50% renewable by 2040. My power bills are already through the roof because they killed all the coal plants here and are doing their best to shut down the natural gas peakers here, too.
I got high price power alerts the last three days here from Ameren - in September. That has never happened in my memory before.

I commuted from rural Nevada to Reno for 15 years and read some great bumper stickers.
1) If it can't be grown, it must be mined
2) Homophobia NO, Homonausea YES.
3) Abortion kills a child.

My problem is why are foreign companies getting the ok to mine Lithium in the US.
Isn't there an American Company somewhere that owns a Bulldozer of excavator?

Biden has already made clear that he wants other countries to reap any benefits from lithium mining.

Sorry, if that plant only exists on one 10 acre plot....it is effectively extinct today. Give it up. You already lost.

If Buckwheat is endangered, then we're all endangered. (Not to mention Alfalfa.) And in the same way that Marxist America is now proudly dependent on hostile nations for its energy sources, not to mention chemicals and computer chips and any other vital manufactured item, we'll need to source this latest folly from China too. Notice too how the Greens have no concerns over stripping out the earth's finite supply of lithium, as their objections are weapons used to destroy the nation.
