It might seem that there is little to be added to what the whole world has witnessed viewing the unutterable shambles of the U.S. departure from Afghanistan. But that would be an illusion. The story of the perilous departure from Afghanistan of NATO forces and civilians and their Afghan collaborators who are now in mortal danger is obviously a matter of great suspense. The United States could certainly tell the Taliban government of Afghanistan that if all those whom the Western powers wished to evacuate were not allowed to leave it would be an act of war.

Excellent article. When Biden hired Jake Sullivan, disastrous policies could have been predicted. He was advisor to Hillary Clintoon when she was Secretary of State. Remember Benghazi? I really do not want to EVER hear how things would have been better if only Hillary had been president.

Great article as usual from Conrad Black. I think, along with the positive of EVERYONE knowing that Biden is (and always has been) unfit for the job, there's some other positive coming out of this horrendous situation in Afghanistan; that is, the leftists are in positions of more power than they ever dreamed of, and we learn that they are incapable of using that power with either intelligence or integrity. They are sitting around some place, desperately wanting to have another fact-finding mission or having some people polled, or something. And along with everything else, their scapegoat is in Florida, and not D.C.

Black is floundering...it's all the USA's fault due to its interventions in the Mid-East. I don't recall ol' Conrad suggesting none of these "interventions" be made. In fact, he has justified US intervention many times over the years. Failure has many fathers, too, Conrad. In this case it is a bi-partisan failure, maintained primarily by Republican administrations. FTA: "If this horrible fiasco contributes to the radical change of course necessary in American political society, it will be worth it—though it is cruelly unjust that the population of Afghanistan should pay for it. Americans might also wish to reflect on the fact that having smashed up Iraq and helped to foment the disintegration of Syria and Yemen and now, after attempting and having failed to drag Afghanistan into the 21st century, some level of self-criticism is justified." It is time to revisit President George Washington's farewell address. It is time for the US to truly put America First - not lead the toothless, effete NATO into foreign wars with no real military goals to appease oil-rich prices and sheiks. Installing democratic regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq was never more than some academic pipe dream. Yet, in Afghanistan, we invested $6.7 TRILLION and 3000 soldiers' lives...to what end? Install democracy? Reform a 7th century social order? Then how did we justify restoring a monarchy in Kuwait? (The US actually considered reinstalling the King of Afghanistan.) This "Leader of the Free World" nonsense has to end. Name those "free nations" we are leading? Where are we taking them? We have an obligation to the US, not Afghanistan, Iraq or Taiwan. Meanwhile we demand "America First"...what investments are we willing to make in the future?

RE: Trump and Milleys walk across the park to the torched church, after three days of rioting in that park, and at the Whitehouse. It was a "Wyatt Earp" moment, and the Rioting STOPPED, not just there but all across the city. Trump also Wyatt Earped, Syria, Isis and afghanistan....ALL of those areas became truly "Mostly Peaceful" because he demonstrated we WILL do what it takes to make them so. He may not speak softly, but he proved he was a Big Stick guy. Milley then proceeded to crawfish and apologize for having "Won", disavowed victory, insisted that surrendering was the proper course, and would do his part to insure that in the future. Biden/Obama/Blinken/Obama/Clinton/Sullivan..now Milley have all Talked loud, sternfaced, full of tough bluster...while waving a pool noodle to "Back it up". Nerf scares nobody. We all hope and pray for the Day that the Lamb and the Lion lie down in peace...that day can ONLY arrive if America IS the Lion. Today's Leaders are sheep, sacrificing their lambs to hyenas and even jackals.

A week after the Fall of Kabul, the flailing hegemon continues to embarrass itself: America's official deadline for total withdrawal from Afghanistan is August 31st, so half the remaining time has already elapsed, and in that first week of a final fortnight, according to the Department of Defense, it evacuated just 2,500 Americans - or about 350 per day. That seems an under-performance - or, as The New York Post's front-page headline distills it, "DUMKIRK".

The American-nurtured Afghan military of the last 20 years that had suffered thousands of prior casualties evaporated in a few hours in the encirclement of Kabul. Enlistees apparently calculated that their own meager chances with the premodern Taliban were still better than fighting as a dependency of the postmodern United States—despite its deterrent embassy pride flags, powerful diversity training programs, and indomitable new Afghan University gender studies majors.

Americans have been given an ultra red pill with the events in Afghanistan. As the incompetence and corruption of America’s military apparatus are laid bare before our eyes, as America’s military leaders are hiding in shame (as they ought to be), and as America’s credibility abroad is being shredded, there is much demanding our reflection. The American people deserve better than the military apparatchiks and crony politicians we have now, but we must learn from our experiences and adjust course. This is the requirement of all free people.

Republican officials’ timidity with regard to the outrages that the Democratic Party is committing against the American people under the Biden Administration dampens the American people’s urge to resist. Their default of leadership helps the Democrats’ seizure of long-term oligarchic power. The people’s deep resentment, however, will follow whoever and whatever ventures offer protection. As ever, leadership falls to whomever actually leads.

As we look at the disgraceful coda of the Global War on Terror and the tens of thousands of our countrymen who have been maimed or killed with scant results, it is clear to all but few (sadly, those few seem to occupy a lot of Defense Department jobs and think tank posts), there must be a better way to fight our wars. If we look to history, and even demands from the anti-war Left, we might find a better way forward.

"Have you or a loved one been hurt or injured by the Democrat Party?" That's the only question Republicans should run on radio and television ads from here on out. It's the same question civil litigators regularly use in late-night commercials when they're looking to add new members to class action lawsuits, but compared to asbestos poisoning, the side-effects of prescription medicines, or injuries from medical devices, the Democrats are the Grand Pooh-bahs of causing physical and emotional harm to everyday Americans.

The COVID pandemic has witnessed the exercise of state “police powers” on a scale and scope unprecedented in America’s peacetime history. Out of fear of contagion, massive amounts of private property in the form of shops, restaurants, bars, and other businesses were peremptorily seized and shuttered. The rights of landlords to collect rents and evict tenants were suspended. The ability of people to cross from one state to another was hobbled by regulations, quarantines, and delays. And most of this was accomplished by governors and mayors acting by decree, with only the most tenuous of statutory authorizations.

A manufactured panic over the January 6 rally has provided Biden and his flunkies with an excuse to attack the U.S. military. The Biden administration has implemented an effort to root out political "extremism" in the military in order to work toward a military with more 'diversity, equity, and inclusion', despite little evidence of any such extremists actually operating within the ranks:

President Biden has decided to adhere to his initial August 31 deadline for withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan, multiple outlets reported on Tuesday. Biden has requested contingency plans should the U.S. need to keep troops in Afghanistan until a later date, a senior administration official told CNN. A Taliban spokesman said on Tuesday that the U.S. must withdraw all its forces from the country by August 31, with “no exceptions.” In response to the Taliban threat, Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) urged Biden to ignore the withdrawal deadline. “Damn the deadline. The American people are not going to surrender our fellow citizens to the Taliban.
