AUSTIN, Texas — Democrats in the Texas Legislature on Monday began bolting for Washington, D.C., and said they were ready to remain there for weeks in a second revolt against a GOP overhaul of election laws, forcing a dramatic new showdown over voting rights in America.
One large group was set to leave Austin on private planes before the GOP could pass a voting bill in a special legislative session ordered by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott(snip) It was not immediately clear how many of the 67 Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives planned to go, but it was expected to be enough to bring the Legislature to a halt.

As I understand it, the "ledge" as it's pronounced, only meets for a short period. Need a Texan to cover for me on this topic.

Don’t guidelines governing voting belong to the states? Running to DC like a bunch spoiled children to get ‘daddy’ to side with them.
Vote them out. Gutless lieberals

If there's one thing democrats can't stand its honest elections. What ever they have to do to stop them they will.

COWARDS!! What was it the Zero said? Oh, yeah - "elections have consequences".
Do what you were elected to do and VOTE. If the other side has more votes, tough luck. The only explanation is they know the new legislation will prevent their election fraud.

The governor called a special session for this voting bill and other "priorities". The Republican leadership should call this to the floor beginning Day One and make the Dems stew in their dereliction. Abbott should be on TV daily decrying the failure of the cowardly Democrats to represent their constituencies by actually voting on the bill. There should be no quarter given politically for this stunt, which is not unique to Texas politics. IIRC Wisconsin Dems did the same a few years ago. Now. let's see how much guts the Texas Republicans have.

Republicans in Oregon legislature tried this tactic. Now, woulld the comments posted here be the same?

RE#9. Yes.
However, when Republicans do it, its to prevent legislation from passing that is clearly bad. Democrats do it to prevent something they dont like. Regardless, it's wrong.

Yes #9, cowards are cowards. Do your job or resign!!!
The governor here in Texas will just have to keep calling new special sessions. He has the power. He needs to make sure all citizens know exactly how much each special session cost them in tax dollars. If the Demon-Rats refuse to come do their jobs, everyone needs to know that.

Put them on the no fly list, give their license plate numbers to the Texas Rangers, nab them as soon as they cross back into the state and keep them out of Texas permanently.

So 58 Democrats left the state on 2 private jets costing 100K? Where did they get their money from?
Abbott should not let them come back to TX without repurcussions. Let’s see how long they will hide in DC. Cut their per diems, their staff’s perdiems and every other travel allowance.

Gov. Abbot should do one of two things. Ground their Planes. Say they have to check it for something, then send the Texas Rangers to bring them back to work. Or, Call another Special Session and have the doors locked and guarded by Rangers until business in finished! Enough. Exactly how much does it cost to rent to Private Jets? Taxpayers won't like that one bit!!

The private jets will most likely be furnished by people like Michael Dell who favors voter fraud or some other rich leftist - maybe facebook. The special session only last for a certain number of days but the governor can just keep calling them one after another. Probably not much can be done to stop the plane legally, although you can bet Patrick will be looking at possibilities. Texas Rangers can't go over state lines but they durn sure can and will detain the dims when they step foot back in the state. They can delay, but all it does is make the voters more angry with them. They'll just lose a few more seats in the next election.

Unless they have some deep pockets benefactors footing the bill for their room and board whilst they hide out in DC, some of these representatives of the people will start feeling the pinch after a while. I doubt that they are all sufficiently independently wealthy to hide out for several weeks. Keep the legislature in session for as long as it takes to break them. Just more dem symbolism over substance. Eventually they will return home with their tails tucked between their legs and be forced to show up. Either that or they can resign en masse thereby denying a quorum, but that ain't happening.

Abbott should have had the vote on Day 1 and LOCK all of them into the chamber so they couldn't pull a stunt like this.

As Governor Abbott and TX House Republicans seem frozen today, trying to figure out what to do, I hope aides and staff come to Lucianne for great ideas. It just takes guts.

LOL The governor should make them self-quarantine when they get back. Make it for a month or so. Nothing gets done in the summer anyway.

Re #1, the GOP has the majority, but there must be a quorum to hold the vote. That’s why they left. So there wouldn’t be a quorum It’s explained in the intro and article...

This is self-inflicted by Abbott. If he was serious about voting issues, the issues would have been early in the original session before the Dems got *anything* they wanted, rather than being tacked on at the end in a special session. Shame on Abbott! And I live in Austin.

"I can and I will continue to call a special session after special session after special session all the way up until election next year. And so if these people want to be hanging out wherever they're hanging out on this taxpayer-paid junket, they're going to have to be prepared to do it for well over a year. As soon as they come back in the state of Texas, they will be arrested, they will be cabined inside the Texas Capitol until they get their job done."
