Road trips often elicit thoughts and memories of quirky roadside attractions, local food, postcards, and long hours behind the wheel. A recent trip from my home in Maryland to Texas, for a nephew's wedding, was just the excuse (snip) Texas has many citizens focused on freedom of action and thought. Everyone we encountered at the wedding was unafraid of COVID (snip) Upon our return to Maryland, my wife heard a local man at the grocery store explain to another shopper that he would keep wearing his mask until someone explicitly told him it was safe and proper not to.

Masks are coming off pretty quickly here in Kentucky. The governor has announced that the state will open everything June 11 but a lot of people are jumping the gun.

Went to church Sunday. It's a big church and what a blessing it was to see faces! However, in the parking lot on the way out we overheard a very loud woman complaining that the number of maskless people far exceeded the proportion of the population that is vaccinated, and how dare they endanger the rest of us! It will be difficult if not impossible to rinse all the brainwashing from all the susceptible people.

How often times it happens that we live our life in chains, and we never even know we have the key... Already Gone by the Eagles.

We hate to look in a mirror to see warts and age spots. The Boomers raised a generation of scaredy-cats. No scraped knees for those young folks, which has morphed even further as kids now happily wear masks as fashion. They have no liberty anyways. Can’t go out to play without adult supervision. Bike helmets. Car seats until 10 years old. Bulletproof back packs. SPF 50 goop smeared all over. Live “healthy” propaganda surrounding them. All we demand anymore is how to be safe. That’s not freedom.

Let me tell you the truth. My daughter lives in a small town in California. But do not get confused about that. Her town of less than 50 thousand has been run by Republicans since incorporation. The streets are clean, the budget is balanced and homeless are invisible. One public park has large basketball courts. They are swept daily, hoop nets always fresh and the drinking fountains work. It is safe to walk through the park and the rest of the town at night. For her, a wonderful place to live. Demographics? Almost all white and Protestant. When I visit my daughter and her family it is a thrilling trip to yesteryear America. The town keeps,a low profile, wisely.

A very accurate contrast in independent vs. dependent mindsets and government policies. Memphis TN and West Memphis, AR have become cesspool. We drive through routinely on IH 40. We NEVER stop between Jackson TN and Little Rock AR. There's wide swaths of rural territory on both sides of Memphis. We tried to enjoy some of the old culture of Memphis by buying tickets for our family to see a show at the historic Orpheum Theater and enjoy BBQ on Beale Street. We were entirely uncomfortable with the parking and rushed as quickly as we could past the drug addicts and homeless occupying every abandoned storefront along our way. Never again. Millions and possibly billions has been thrust at downtown Memphis, only to be swindled into the pockets of corrupt local elected officials and bureaucrats.

#6. What does Protestant have to do with it? I am sure there are Catholics and Jews living in her town.

Excellent commentary, thanks for posting, OP!
And this is why I really don't enjoy even visiting the NE, nothing could make me live there. Sad, mindless people in run down faded cities and towns, run by the same old Marxists.....into their same old death spiral.

We had the same experience recently. Visited son and daughter-in-law in Texas. Felt more free immediately when we got off the plane, went to a rodeo, met great people. For the first time in 30 years, returning to San Diego ("America's Finest City," MA) was depressing.

FTA: "Unlike the state of Maryland, Texas has many citizens focused on freedom of action and thought. Everyone we encountered at the wedding was unafraid of COVID and exhibited independence and self-reliance in personal matters. These people were staunchly against the government telling them what they could and couldn't do."
I'm a Texan but must acknowledge that the attributes ascribed to many Texans aren't exclusive to the Lone Star State but describe core conservative American principles that can be found in all 50 states, perhaps in lesser numbers. Fellow posters from California have made that clear. I was also surprised to find so many fellow down-to-earth conservatives in southern New Jersey while on TDY there, that I jokingly called it Far East Texas. Good Americans are not in short supply. Unfortunately, the left has targeted Texas and Florida for a political culture shift by means of immigration, both legal and illegal. Virginia and North Carolina have already been turned.
