The Biden administration moved Thursday to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, fulfilling a key goal of anti-smoking groups who say the products harm minorities while sparking a debate about government overreach and the potential creation of an underground market. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra said the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to kickstart the removal will help “our most marginalized communities” and accelerate the decrease in overall tobacco use. “Tobacco-related death and disease must become a part of America’s past. These public health measures will save lives,” he said. “Banning menthol in cigarettes and flavors in cigars will decrease the appeal of these tobacco products

Absolutely amazing! We're demonizing menthol cigarettes but legalizing pot all over the country!
The world is upside down!

Hard to understand..........the federal government is planning to ban flavored tobacco smokes and the states are beginning to legalize pot. What worries me most is that the whole country is going up in smoke !!!!!

The whole country started going up in smoke when LBJ became POTUS. The Kennedy assassination was the beginning of a domestic policy disaster.

Will possession of a banned menthol cigarette be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine or jail time?

Menthol cigarettes only harm minority communities? Funny how things only hurt minority communities and never harm white people.

Oh fer Chrissake. So if the libtards get their way, menthol cigarettes will be smuggled into the USA along with heroin, fentanyl and methamphetamines. One-stop shopping in the get-tow......

Yup, what's the logic here? Menthol cigarettes are deadly and must be banned, but marijuana cigarettes are being sold in state dispensaries like there's no tomorrow? I'll bet there's a lot more marijuana in marginalized communities than Menthol cigarettes. Along with free needles for the heavy duty stuff.
Their virtue signaling is verrry nuanced.

Floyd didn't die of methol cigs....but of massive amounts of illegal fentanyl and meth. Maybe make that illegal.....Oh, wait....OK, make sure the border is closed so that they can't smuggle it in....Oh, wait......
Never mind.

#11 has it exactly right. This will create a black market (no pun intended) in menthol cigarettes. If you ban something that is in demand, people will find a way. It happened with alcohol during Prohibition, it's still happening with marijuana in some places, and now it will happen with menthol cigs. They never learn.

Hilarious! the majority of the money paid on cigarette purchases go to taxes. The state and federal governments make the most profit from cigarette sales. Oh, the irony!

#8 -- There are two kinds of Democrats.
The first kind think they are smart enough to run everybody else's lives.
The second kind are dumb enough to believe the first kind.

I bet it's would be trivially easy for people to make their own menthol cigs by swiping each one with a bit of menthol oil of the appropriate concentration and letting it dry. Massive business opportunity; stick it to them all.

I'm white as snow and I smoked menthol cigarettes for over a decade. I quit smoking and so can black people. If they don't want to, they will find a way to get their menthols. It would be comical to see menthol cigarettes being smuggled in from Mexico while marijuana is sold openly in most communities.

Force all tobacco products to be totally organic...NO CHEMICALS! IT's not the tobacco killing millions, it's the deadly chemicals they add to the products to make them taste different or burn faster...

When watermelon blunts and Kools are outlawed, only outlaws will have Kools and watermelon blunts. Why are black people not deeply offended at being labeled “our most marginalized communities," as if they are children tricked by evil advertisers into smoking? FDA could use the same logic to ban fast food, soda, and snacks, and quickly too if they tweak what's allowable for purchase on food stamps.
