Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter on Tuesday in the death of George Floyd. It’s been over a month since Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the state’s mask mandate and ended business restrictions, but at least for now, Texas has not become the epicenter of a coronavirus surge as some predicted. After Abbott announced COVID-19 restrictions would end on March 10, President Joe Biden called the decision a “big mistake” and that it reflected “Neanderthal thinking.” A slew of other political figures thought the decision was premature and a way to distract people from the February winter storm and power outage that killed at least 111 Texans. “It is now time to open Texas 100%,”

Just days before President Biden kicks off a climate summit with world leaders, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization released a report Monday warning that “time is fast running out” to keep global temperatures in check. Titled “State of the Global Climate 2020,” the report finds that concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continued to climb in 2020, despite lockdowns imposed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Last year, the report notes, was the third warmest on record, worsening the melting of glaciers and sea ice, the acidification of the world’s oceans and the severity of wildfires and hurricanes.

Walter Mondale has died at the age of 93. A former Vice President and U.S. Senator for Minnesota, his death from natural causes was confirmed by family on Monday evening. (Snip) He served as the 42nd Vice President of the United States under Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981, and ran as the Democratic nominee in the 1984 presidential election against Ronald Reagan, with Mondale only winning Minnesota and the District of Columbia in a famous Republican landslide. Before that, he was a U.S. Senator for Minnesota between 1964 and 1976. He also ran against as a late replacement following

The Biden administration over the weekend shuttered a Houston warehouse that housed unaccompanied migrant children following allegations that the nonprofit organization running the site failed to provide adequate living conditions for hundreds of young girls, multiple sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) opened the warehouse early this month in response to the surge of migrants arriving at the southern border. (Snip) Sources familiar with the facility's operation said the girls housed there, aged 13-17, were at times instructed to use plastic bags for toilets because there were not enough staff

As the trial of former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin wrapped up with closing arguments, the nation braced itself for a verdict: guilty or not guilty of killing George Floyd, the 46-year-old Black man who died during an arrest after Chauvin pressed his knee to Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. The 12 jurors on the panel have as much time as they need to deliberate, but there is a possibility of a hung jury, which is a failure to reach at least one unanimous verdict. Chauvin is facing three charges, including second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree

Investors managing $11 trillion have called on the world’s biggest banks to phase out financing of fossil-fuel companies and throw their weight behind the goals of the Paris climate agreement. Asset managers, including Federated Hermes Inc.’s EOS division and Pacific Investment Management Co., have asked 27 banks to commit to eliminating emissions across their operations by 2050, including those generated from lending, trading and underwriting, and set interim reduction targets. DENVER - The governor’s mansion was among several homes hit during a vandalism spree in Denver overnight. Sister station CBS Denver reports most of the targets were the city’s Cheesman Park neighborhood. “Woah, nice house bro, gentrifiers,” “Police make white people feel safe from minorities,” and “Abolish police” were among the phrases spray-painted on walls and garage doors. An anarchist “A” was sprayed on a plaque outside the governor’s mansion. CBS Denver says the words “Adam Toledo” and “He was 13 years old, say his name,” were written on a brick wall across the street from the mansion. Several demonstrations

Two Minnesota National Guard members on duty in the Twin Cities were injured early Sunday after being fired at in what authorities said was a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis. The Guard said the injuries were minor. One Guard member was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries from shattered glass; the other was treated at the scene for superficial wounds. The Guard says the two were part of a "neighborhood security team" deployed in Minneapolis for Operation Safety Net, a multi-agency effort to provide security amid the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial. Operation Safety Net also has responded to protests

PORTLAND, Ore. — As states around the country lift COVID-19 restrictions, Oregon is poised to go the opposite direction — and many residents are fuming about it. A top health official is considering indefinitely extending rules requiring masks and social distancing in all businesses in the state.(Snip) But the idea has prompted a flood of angry responses, with everyone from parents to teachers to business owners and employees crying government overreach. Wood’s agency received a record number of public comments, mostly critical, and nearly 60,000 residents signed a petition against the proposal. Opponents also are upset government officials won’t say

Last summer, I wrote a short story entitled Rat Island, set in a post-pandemic United States. In it, the rule of law and social order have broken down, with mobs roaming the streets of Los Angeles. A wealthy group of people stand on top of a skyscraper, waiting for the helicopter that will whisk them away, but the crowd storms the building, desperate to board. In the fall of 2020 my agent reported a surprising amount of interest from Hollywood in adapting my story for the screen—but this cooled off after the presidential election, when there appeared to be
