UTLA teachers have been warned not to post vacation pictures on social media as the union continues to seek a safe return to in-person instruction amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report Monday. The teachers were urged to keep spring break pictures off social media because it could hurt the union's argument that it's currently unsafe to return to the classroom, according to a screenshot that appeared to be from a roughly 5,700 member Facebook group titled, "UTLA FB GROUP- Members Only." (Snip) The warning comes after UTLA members voted overwhelmingly to reject what the union called an "unsafe"

Every Nevada Democratic Party staff member quit after Democratic socialists won party leadership roles, according to a new report. Alana Mounce, the party’s executive director, reportedly notified the newly elected party chair, Judith Whitmer, that she and other staff members were resigning, according to The Intercept. The party’s operations director, research director, communications director and finance director all resigned after the left-wing candidates of the “NV Dems Progressive Slate,” which was run by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Left Caucus, beat out the Democratic Party’s “Progressive Unity Slate” on Saturday. A significant provision making any student loan forgiveness tax-free has been included in the $1.9 trillion federal coronavirus stimulus package that’s working its way through Congress and will likely soon be signed into law. Currently, any student loan debt canceled by the government can be considered taxable and levied at the borrower’s normal income tax rate. For example, if someone earns $50,000 a year, and was at a 22% tax rate, and received $30,000 in student loan forgiveness, they might be slapped with a $6,600 bill from the IRS. Soon, borrowers may be off the hook from these payments. What

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill postponed the start of Derek Chauvin's trial in the killing of George Floyd on Monday, after an appeals court ordered him to reconsider his original decision to dismiss a third-degree murder charge against the former Minneapolis police officer. The decision came as a pool of potential jurors waited to start the selection process. The delay comes as Chauvin's defense attorney, Eric Nelson, said he is finalizing an appeal asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to review the question of whether Cahill should consider reinstating the murder charge. "We're prepared to try this case. It is not

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared the revelation that they married in secret three days before their wedding at Windsor Castle. Bringing up the "bombshell that has been lost in all of this", Piers said on Good Morning Britain today, "I didn't even know you could do that twice in three days". "So the vows they made on national TV were not real vows? So everything we saw was a sham. "Also who has the Archbishop of Canterbury in their back garden to get married? And they claim to be 'people of the people'. "The Archbishop of Canterbury wouldn't

SANAA - Yemen’s Houthi forces fired drones and missiles at the heart of Saudi Arabia’s oil industry on Sunday, including a Saudi Aramco facility at Ras Tanura vital to petroleum exports, in what Riyadh called a failed assault on global energy security. The Saudi energy ministry said there were no casualties or loss of property from the attacks. The defence ministry said it intercepted an armed drone coming from the sea prior to hitting its target at an oil storage yard at Ras Tanura, site of a refinery and the world’s biggest offshore oil loading facility. On Saturday, students at the University of Colorado, Boulder, fought for their right to party. Literally. The university and the city’s police department are investigating after hundreds of maskless students showed up to a mid-pandemic rager-turned-riot in the city’s University Hill neighborhood on Saturday night, injuring three SWAT responders and damaging city and private property, authorities said Sunday. Video showed one student's car, its windows already shattered, being overturned by a throng of partygoers. “Any student who is found responsible for engagement in acts of violence or other egregious acts connected to the events—including damage to property and not dispersing

MINNEAPOLIS — Late last year, a 14-page questionnaire began to arrive in mailboxes across Minneapolis and its suburbs. It asked if the recipient had watched the video of George Floyd dying under a police officer’s knee. What about the protests against police brutality, it wanted to know — did you go? How do you feel about Black Lives Matter? It asked respondents to list their education level, any martial arts training, even their favorite podcasts. And then there was the essay prompt, followed by a daunting expanse of blank paper: Tell us everything you have heard about the death of

LA County is considering returning a beachfront property to the descendants of its original owners who were the first Black landowners in Manhattan Beach, California. As KABC-TV reported, Willia and Charles Bruce's property was taken away when the city council used eminent domain in 1924. According to the outlet, the couple's property, which is now a lifeguard building, served as a beach resort for Black families at the time amid racial tension and discrimination. "The property that was once the Bruce's is now owned by the County, and I want LA County to be part of righting this wrong," Los

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The East Bay home where Vice President Kamala Harris grew up may become a historic landmark. Berkeley leaders will consider a resolution on Tuesday that would allow for homes of historic residents to be given landmark status. Harris was born in Oakland and spent most of her childhood in Berkeley. She attended Berkeley's African American cultural center almost every week and she was part of the city's first voluntary school integration program. "Her election as the first woman, African-American and South Asian American to be elected to the second highest position in the country are historic achievements that

CARMEL, Ind. – Two sharp-eyed young sisters were hailed as change agents and champions of equality by the Carmel City Council Monday. While passing Carmel construction zones on their school bus, Blair Babione, 11, and Brienne Babione, 9, saw something that seemed wrong: signs that read “Men Working.” (Snip) Finkham introduced a resolution to enforce the gender neutral guidelines on Carmel construction projects. It passed unanimously. “’Men Working” or ‘Men At Work’ signage communicates the false and unacceptable message that women cannot or should not work in the construction trades or other related fields,” the resolution reads. They came as siblings, parents, spouses, and friends. Families of more than a dozen Minnesotans killed by police gathered Friday before the trial of Derek Chauvin to demand a murder conviction in the death of George Floyd. If guilty, Chauvin would be the first former police officer to be convicted of murdering a Black man in Minnesota. The state's only ex-cop currently in prison for murdering a civilian is Mohamed Noor, who in 2019 was sentenced to 12 years in prison for fatally shooting Justine Damond after she called 911 to report a possible rape.
