(Map) After weeks of shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, the nation has begun to slowly open up.
Beaches and state parks are reopening to visitors, spurring concerns about overcrowding. The first barbers have returned to work, masks over their faces. Some restaurants are getting ready to serve customers again.
About half of the states have begun to reopen their economies and public life in some meaningful way, though health experts have expressed concern that a premature opening could lead to a spike in coronavirus infections that would not be detected in official case counts for weeks. Many areas are still seeing cases grow, and the number of known deaths related to

OP note: In addition to the U. S. map, showing the status of all the states, there is a state-by-state rundown on current status as of publication date. They are updating as changes occur. This is one of the few things the NYT is good at.

Well, I think Gov Ducey made a great call in reopening all the beaches here in AZ.

I'll pass on this, as they require you to sign in. Too much of my information is out there already for me to willingly give up more to the DNC.

Not too many surprises here except for a couple of states that have sparse populations but rising numbers. Probably travelers from hot areas like New York City who packed their motor homes and ran to the country. I expected Maine and other Atlantic Coast states to be higher but probably the escapees got out in time.

Well what do you know. Looks almost exactly like the electoral map of blue states (Democrat = disease, death, debt, and destruction) and red states (Republican = free, healthy, businesses open). Who could have guessed the map matchup would be so closely aligned?

Announced today ,the rest of the school year has been cancelled and my idiot governor had extended the state shut down for another 30 days. This will include Memorial Day , which is a big deal here and means big business. It's New Jersey , which has miles of beaches and countless shore towns that depend on the Memorial Day kickoff of the short summer season. This is not going to sit well with the people. Not at all. And this jerk wants a bailout from the federal govt. By the way , where I live, in south Jersey, Meridian ( which bought our hospital) transports virus victims from northern NJ and puts them in our small town hospital which in turn skews our numbers. Yes. I am cranky and angry.

We have had 4 deaths today, our local hospital cannot take any more patients, and as I went to WalMart(mask, gloves, alcohol wipe in hand) I see cars from MD, NY, and NJ. Go home and stop bringing that virus here!

Our county in KS opens Monday. Most of the counties in our state should never have been shut down. Only a few counties have double digit deaths, the highest is 64. Most have zero or one CASE, and zero deaths per county. The county with the state prison has big numbers, but they are almost entirely inside the prison.
The top two counties in KS as far as cases, are the one north of us, which has 51 deaths per 100,000 and a far western county where the meat packing plants are has huge numbers of cases, yet very few deaths (880 cases/ 3 deaths). Our county has hundreds of cases, but only 7.5 deaths per 100,000. Really surprising to see over 7 times the death rate per capita in the next county over. That is so dramatic as to really pique my curiosity.
Same percentage of over 65 within a fraction of a percent in the two counties. Racial mixes are very different. 26% black, 22% Hispanic in the high death rate county, 4% black, 7% Hispanic in our county.
Six times the number of blacks, and seven times the number of deaths. Coincidence? The high number of cases in the western county but low deaths, 880 cases, 3 deaths, needs to be looked at. Likely in illegal aliens working in the meat packing plants out there. Conventional wisdom says that illegal workers are younger and Hispanic, but I have no idea if that is factual in this case.
Political correctness will likely interfere with doing proper research into why these very uneven situations have happened. Lifestyles? Race? We know that sickle cell disease almost exclusively affects blacks. Is this virus like that? Is it only the obesity and related chronic diseases that are much higher in blacks? I don't know they are that much higher, I see lots of obese white folks, too.
